2nd Nov 2014 (舊朋友 – Ram Chiang (蔣志光), Rita Carpio (韋綺姍), Chilam Cheung (張智霖), Maple Hui (許秋怡), Sarah Wong (黃寶欣) and 甘子輝)

The song that I wanted to talk about today is “舊朋友” by Ram Chiang (蔣志光) and his friends, including Rita Carpio (韋綺姍), Chilam Cheung (張智霖), Maple Hui (許秋怡), Sarah Wong (黃寶欣) and 甘子輝. This song was bought up recently in a TVB drama “老表,你好Hea!” (“Come on, Cousin”). In the drama, Ram sung one of Jacky Cheung’s classic “愛是永恆”, and so many people, especially the younger generations, are so surprise that Ram could sing so well. Many didn’t seems to remember that he actually produced a number of very popular songs back in the 80’s and early 90’s. He was also considered as the hidden member of the popular music group Raidas from the 80’s. His name probably didn’t show up in any of the Raidas’ albums, because of his contract with Polygram. While to a certain degree, I think that he gave up on his musical career, but anyhow, it was sad to see that such a talented singer have been forgotten through time. I am glade that this drama opens him to a much wider audience now, and I hope he will use this chance to work on his music again. Alright, back to the song, the direct English translation of the title is “Old friend”.

The lyrics of the song are about friendship. While different singer sing a different line, but I am not going to distinguish them as I think the meaning flows better without it. If said, time looks like it was drunk, feels a bit tired. Thinking about the past, how much happiness and sadness have I been through? Time took over again, and it feel that it is hard to back off. Today, I don’t know how many people are still willing to hold my hand. The land is long and it is own by the sky (this is more of a Chinese phase, meaning that it has been a long time), wish that there are good friend to warm my heart. Hold hands and share our burden, regardless whether we are happy of sad. Old friends, our heart are tight together, and I wish that you could treasure it. It is impossible to explain it all, so all I wanted to say is what more could I ask for. How, how could I keep this moment? Wanting a bit and a bit more. It’s friendship, now I got it. All I wanted to say is what more could I ask for. Hope you will like the song.

30th Oct 2014 (說謊的東西 – Sarah Wong (黃寶欣)/I Will Survive – Gloria Gaynor)

The song for today is “說謊的東西” by Sarah Wong (黃寶欣). This is the Chinese cover version of Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive”. The direct English translation of the title is “The lying thing”.

The lyrics of the song are about the protagonist got dump, she managed to survive and become someone better. It said, she was scare that she will have a white funeral, because that day he left her behind. Living by herself, without him she felt so painful and she was half dead. But until now, she finally realised how funny she looked. Look at her now, she is shining. She is reborn and she looks much more sexy and beautiful. Now, if he look at her again, he will beg to be with her again. He will say all his touching line, but not realising how funny he looks. Stop playing her, you lying thing. Does he knows that he doesn’t worth anything to her now? Now she can take care of herself and calm; having him on her side would be too much. Too much sweet words would make it looks stupid and wrong. Stop boring her, you lying thing. Does he knows that he doesn’t need to act and promise anymore? Now she can take care of herself and calm, she is fine without him, she will survive. There were countless times that she hide in a dark corner, couldn’t control her tears, all because back then she didn’t believe that there was an end to their love. She lied to herself day and night that he still loves her and would be that wrong, but then she finally understand who was only after the body. But now she is shining. She had been washed by sadness and reborn, so she now how to protect herself. Hope you will like the song.

The song for today is “酒杯敲鋼琴” by Joe Tay (Joe Cheng 鄭敬基) and Sarah Wong (黃寶欣). This is Joe's classic. This song is the Chinese cover version of "Lady Valentine" by Monte Kristo. This song was suggested by a fellow reader yesterday, coincidentally I heard the 2014 version ("酒杯再敲琴", translated as "Wine glass hit the piano again") of this song yesterday, so I guess I really should talk about it today. The 2014 version is sing by Joe, featuring Shimica Castro Wong (黃宇希) and Chun Tung Yu (余震東). The direct English translation of the title is “Wine glass hit the piano”. There is a funny version call “酒杯敲你頭” (“Wine glass hit your head”), the lyrics of this version was written by Andrew Lam (林敏聰), a very famous lyrics writer who written many hit songs in the 80’s and 90’s. The funny version was sung by Andrew as well (though from memory it should be sung with Eric Tsang (曾志偉) as well, as they used to host a funny show together on ATV, but YouTube only got Andrew’s solo version, so maybe I remember wrong).

The lyrics of “酒杯敲鋼琴” is about the male protagonist feeling sad and not feeling to talk about it, his girlfriend feels that this is going to affect their relationship. The lyrics sung by Joe would be marked by M:, by Sarah with F: and when they sung together, T:. T: Wine glass hit the piano. M: In my heart, there are many dreams. I wanted to make them real, but it felt like I am just keep making the wrong turn. No matter what I do, I just can’t find a way. T: Wine glass hit the piano. M: My heart is dull. F: Your heart is dull. M: Wanted you to save me. T: Wine glass hit the piano. M: My heart is dull. F: Your heart is dull. M: But I accepted it alone, hiding all my feelings. F: Not speaking make you feel tired. You face is like a ultra-heavy wooden ship. The low tone blues are locking your eyebrow. T: Wine glass hit the piano. F: You heart is singing alone; the sky is already darken. Could two people sing together, perhaps in the future? M: Stay away, let me be, let me cry. I’m a man, wouldn’t let you see me cry. T: Tonight is quiet, staying in lonely street. M: Wanted someone to support me, but I pretended to hate to ask for help as I am worry that others will laugh at me so I can only hide. F: Know that you are sad as you lean on my back. My lover is now like a rock, not willing to talk and close the door to the heart.

Hope you will like the song. I have also linked to the 2014 version, the funny version and the original English version below just so that you can feel how a song could evolve.
