The song for today is “鋼鐵是怎樣煉成的” by Denise Ho. This is a reader request from a while back. Sorry that it took me so long to write this as I am losing track of your requests (a song request page is on it ways :) along with the long promised artist list, it is much more work then I initially anticipated. The label version should be ready soon, then it will be upgraded to the page version :D So keep an eye out on the right hand side in the next week or two :D) Anyway, back to the song, the direct English translation of the title is “How was steel forged”.

The lyrics of the song are about the protagonist felt that she got so strong that people around her are scared to approach her and not able to trough her outer steel protective layer. She said: “Melt me from the beginning to get me away from my believe of bring troubles, forging a brighter and more beautiful me. After the cold water, got to wait for a long time. After each shock, I become stronger. The hardest is the fight of words, how I should put on my armour to fight against words. Really this steel helmet, getting thicker everyday. The lyrics of the song are about the protagonist who usually got ignored, but now wanting to catch the attention of the person that she likes. The song that I chose for today is “是有種人” by Denise Ho. This is Denise’s newest song and it was released only a few days ago. I chose this song because I think Denise is a person that we need to respect and support. Because she spook up for the student and protesters in Hong Kong last year during the umbrella revolution and the action that she took, it is said that she have been banned from performing in China. I guess partly because of that, she decided to be an independent singer now, to not be tight down by any restrain. But at the same time she is no longer supported financially by big music companies. I fully respect her courage, as it is very rare for any of this generation singers to stand up and voice out for their believes even knowing that doing so would damage their career. To me she had really taken up the mantle of her teacher, Anita Mui. As an independent singer now, she is trying to find new ways for Hong Kong music, so that the Hong Kong musicians and singers don’t need to rely on the China market so much and can gain more freedom in music choice. I would like to pay my tribute to her for solely taking up such a big task and big risk so I decided to talk about this song here today to let more people know about her and her newest song :) The direct English translation of the title is “There is a type of people”.

The lyrics of the song are about endorsing diversity in our society and don’t be let down even if we are viewed as the inferior type. It said: “Beauty is not only produced by the world that consist of a bit of everything. Without sky ladder, there are still people from earth that will farm. There isn’t just one type of past, present and future, so we need to treasure. We don’t need a ruler to determine whether we are useful or not. The song for today is “舊約” by Denise Ho. This song was from 2009. The title of the song got two meaning, it could either means “Old testament” or “Old promise”, though through the lyrics, it seems that the second translation is more appropriate as it better match the lyrics.

The lyrics of the song are about the protagonist trying to keep her promise even if the worse things are happening. It said: “Nothing could stop her dating him, even if the sky and ground got destroyed. Suddenly the body is full of energy, feel full of strength at the most dangerous time. She had been so normal that there was nothing special about her. Why she managed to know how to fly today? All because of him. The song for today is “禁色” by Tat Ming Pair. This song was released in 1988. This song was covered by Denise Ho in 2005. The direct English translation of the title is “Forbidden colour” (though I think it is better to translate as “Forbidden love”). Although the lyrics doesn’t spell it out clearly, but the song is about same sex relationship (or more broadly, a type of love relationship that is not accepted by the general public). Just a side note, the key singer in Tat Ming Pair, Anthony Wong and Denise Ho are both singers that have publicly come out and admit that they are homosexual.

The lyrics of the song, as mentioned before, are about forbidden love. The protagonist said: “The rain on the window is trying so hard to distract us from sleeping, and once again it make the messy hair pile wet. No need to be scared, you are crying because you are frightened. Don’t worry, as love is innocent. Please close the window, place your dreams in the future and let me hold your hand again. The song for today is “勞斯．萊斯” by Denise Ho. I had talked about the demo version “勞絲.萊絲” by Charmaine Fong previously. The two versions share the same name (although the words used are slightly different, they pronounced the same). The two versions got different lyrics despite they got similar story line. The direct English translation of the title is “Rolls．Royce”

The lyrics of the song are about gay love. It said, Rolls and Royce are both young man. Rolls was originally one of the best player in the school team. Royce just likes to read. But the two just happened to see each other all the time, and they always wore the same clothes. The romance story begin from the two accompanying table, but the two of them not dare to go wantonly. Perhaps being close friends always carry love. But being such a good brother and love each other so much, others will always say no this this relationship. When they got carried away sometime they put their hands onto the other shoulder, but one of them will back off. They enjoyed it secretly, but worry to speak out.
