The
song for today is “但願人長久” by Leslie Cheung. I personally
really like this song. The direct English translation of the title is “Wish
that the relationship could be long”. Note that there are a number of song that
uses this title, but generally speaking they are different song, they got
different lyrics.
The
lyrics of the song are about love. The protagonist said: “At a dark quite
place, lonelily gazing at the stars. Every night the stars don’t change, every
night the star shine. Wish that people don’t change, just in the same way as
the star. Every night shine like a star, always there every night. Through the
long night, if the stars can work without rest, then why could us be forever?
Wish that what’s left behind is a ray of light like the star, through the long
dark night.” Hope you will like the song.
The song for today is “打開信箱” by Leslie Cheung. The
direct English translation of the title is “Opening letter box”. This song is
the Cantonese cover version of “Nainen sä oot” by Markku Aro.
The lyrics of the song describe the feeling of the protagonist
who is waiting for a letter from someone that he loves. He said: “Knocking on
the letter box is like a lonely hand. Oh, are you inside? Who will understand
this pain, who will understand today’s sadness. Card, electricity bill, and
other selling booklet, sadly your letter is not in there. Who will believe that
the feeling from the past will remain the same. Opening the letterbox, but
inside is just full of confusion. Opening the letterbox, the sad, waiting
eyesight. Today my heart, there is only wishing in sadness, because you no
longer say more than half a sentence for me. Hi, how are you, are the sceneries
overseas great? Now, I feel that I am annoying. But no matter how you make me heartbroken
again, I still wish that we could be together again. Opening the letterbox, but
inside is just full of confusion. Opening the letterbox, the sad, waiting
eyesight. Today my heart, there is only wishing in sadness, because your true
heart had already turn fake. Opening letter box.” Hope you will like the song.
As usual, I have linked to the original song for comparison.
The
song for today is “我眼中的她” by Leslie Cheung. The direct English
translation of the title is “The her in my eyes”.
The
lyrics of the song are about the protagonist is breaking up with his girlfriend
as he feel that she had changed so much. He said: “Even you said you would change,
willing to come back to me, even using that soft voice, that type of voice that
sounds like it could compensate everything that you did wrong. But I loved you
to a point that I changed my mind. On that day that I felt the worse, I
understood that the face that I love is best not to be around me. In my eyes,
she hugged and ended at an uncertain future. Someday, she will exist. In my
eyes, she (referring to his girlfriend image in his mind) is better than you,
worse than you, it really isn’t that important. From first sight, she might not
be as good as you, but I rather she never be like you, then at least we could
be in love until we die, why lie to myself? Even if you wanted to hug me again,
your movement is hard to be like you were before. No matter whom I am to you,
all I wanted, dreamed of, is the one from before.” Hope you will like the song.
The
song for today is “寂寞有害” by Leslie Cheung. The direct English
translation of the title is “Loneliness is harmful”.
The
song is about the protagonist telling others not to be too serious about love,
just simple let people to love you. He said, if you felt that you only love
him, if you lament more than cuteness, if you look forward to be in love
forever, then don’t come. If you only want to show people how much you love
each other, then why let him to be waiting forever. You look up to him because
he never change his personality for others. Don’t be too serious, being too
serious you couldn’t let your comfort go, not comfortable. If you wanted to be
loved, then you shouldn’t care about anything. Let other love you and just
through your thought of how to love others into the sea. If you have fallen in
love with him then you would know that loneliness is harmful. A million loves
you, why still worry about being hurt. Losing him in exchange for nine thousand
different hopes, not harmful. Try to care about this guy, try to relay with
him. Letting go will make your freewill more cute. It will make him harder to
say breakup. Hope you will like the song.
The
song for today is “我” by Leslie Cheung. This song was
released in 2000. The direct English translation of the title is “Me”.
The
lyrics of the song are about recognising self-value. The protagonist said: “I
am what I am, I am a very special me. I am glad that there are different types
of foot print on earth. God made human, and there are many different types that
he allowed. I am glad that I stand at the roof of my house being a happy man.
Holding my heart, telling the world what is bravery. What am I? There is only
one in ten. In the grapes garden, the song of narcissus started playing. What
am I? One of the many sands in this world. Rocks are much bigger, but I like
this me. I am glad, everyone stay in their place in this world. Being truthful,
telling the world what is bravery. What am I? There is only one in ten. In the
grapes garden, the song of narcissus started playing. What am I? One of the
many sands in this world. Rocks are much bigger, but I like this me. I am
fateful that this is me.” Hope you will like the song.
The song for today is “為你鍾情” by Leslie Cheung. This
is one of Leslie’s classic songs. The direct English translation of the title
is “Fallen in love for you”.
The lyrics of the song are about love. The protagonist said
that he fallen in love for her, and he will give her the most truthful self. So
please treasure this relationship. He never told anyone any secret, and this is
the first time he told people about his thought. He wishes that she will promise
to prove to him that at this moment she is touched. Then openly tell people
about how she feel and use that golden ring as a proof. Tell him that she will
finally accept, and from now on uses his last name. Tell him “I do! I do!”, and
willing to make him happy for the rest of his life. He fallen in love for her,
and he will give her the most truthful self. So please treasure this
relationship. Then a hundred years past and he will still be with her to the
end, using that true love as a proof. Hope you will like the song.
The
song for today is “少女心事” by Leslie Cheung. Not sure why,
but this morning when I wore up this song was already playing in my head, so I
thought I should talk about it here today. Like many other songs back in the 80’s
this is a Chinese cover version of a Japanese song “Sayonara” by Koujiro Shimizu
(清水宏次朗).
The direct English translation of the title is “Girl’s mind”.
The lyrics
of the song are about an affair between the protagonist and a girl. It said, in
the foggy light, a drunk girl is releasing the smell of love. The grey jacket
is smell like perfume. In the silence the girl is not dare to look at the
protagonist. Who is the person that uses this sadness to lock her up? Her
cherry colour lips are tightly closed. He understands that it is presumptuous
to kiss her, but he hope that this kiss could unlock her from her tears. Sayonara
(this is Good bye in Japanese), sayonara, girl’s mind, he wishes that he could
understand and knows how it works. Sayonara, sayonara, girl’s minds, can’t see
the end of this unpredictable love. The eye brow looks like a heart. The
oversize shirt is releasing the sense of love. Her hand is playing with the
white buttons, it felt like as if someone is saying that he can’t play dumb
anymore. Hope you will like the song. As usual, I have also linked to the
original Japanese song.
The
song for today is “側面” by Leslie Cheung. This song was
very popular back when it was released. The direct English translation of the
title is “Side face”.
The lyrics
of the song are about understanding. The protagonist said: “It is like performing
on stages, your eyes only see one side of my face. I can see that you are obsessed
with me, but you only know that side of me. You know me well? You understand
me? Did you ever peek the other side of thought? Seeing you every day like seeing
my partner, we talked about everything, but all too shallow. Look at me, face
me, see through me, feel surprise now? You are you, me is me, this is love, do
you need time to digest this? Cover up a bit, would you feel a bit better?
Leaning a bit more on an angle, would I be more sexy? Meeting at night, saying
goodbye in the morning, there would be no weakness. Look at me, face me, see
through me, feel surprise now? You are you, me is me, this is love, do you need
time to digest this?” Hope you will like the song.
The
song that I chose for today is “沉默是金” by Sam Hui and Leslie Cheung.
This is a true classic. The melody of the song was written by Leslie while the
lyrics of the song were written by Sam. I think this song was originally sung by Sam
along, but personally I like the version that both Sam and Leslie sing
together. The direct English translation of the title is “Silence is gold”.
The
lyrics of the song are about life. The lyrics uses complex words, so hopefully
my translation could still capture its meaning fully. It said, at a windy
night, the protagonist thinking about the past alone. Perhaps he was fully of
anger in the past, false accusations and blame filled his stomach. He care so
much about rumours. Now he learned his lessons and pointed to the right
directions by books, he can now see it through and not trapped anymore. He
feels that he understand now not like before; he rub off his tears and moved
forward. Fate determined whether you are rich or poor. Wrongs will never be
right and real will always be real. No matter what you said, he will just focus
on his work as he believes that silence is gold. The society will judge, so
watch your words and try not to attack others with words. When you bump into
cold wind and rain, don’t be too serious. You should be confidence about
yourself, ignore others attack and judging. Just let others laugh and yell at
you, as you can just ignore it. We are young, so we can keep being ourselves.
Keep going, and be ourselves. Hope you will like the song. I have also linked
to Sam solo version for comparison.
The
song for today is “風繼續吹” by Leslie Cheung. This is one of
Leslie’s classic. The direct English translation of the title is “Wind keep
blowing”.
The
lyrics of the song are about love. At the start, the protagonist advice his
girlfriend to go home, but she said she doesn’t want to. She just tells him to
hug her. The wind from the sea keeps blowing and it blowed off the fire. He saw
sadness in her, so how could he leave? He thinks that she is beautiful even
when she cry. How to stop her crying? All he can think of is to kiss her
tenderly. Let the wind keep blowing, and he doesn’t want to leave her. In his
heart he wanted to stay and accompany her. Wind keeps blowing and he doesn’t
want to be far away from her. There are tears in his heart and he doesn’t want
to face her when he is crying. There were lot of happy memory in the past and
he wanted to chase those memories with her. Let’s wash off the sadness and pain
and only remember the sweetness. Need to hold up the good bye tears and not let
it drip. Tried so hard, but still, the good bye tears drip. He had already made
her happy and she had tide down his heart. She will forever be in his heart and
he will not remember anyone else. Keep every tears in his eyes, but why they
still drip. Hope you will like the song.
Today
I went for a bike ride, on a trail that I never been on before. Riding alone,
seeing all the trees and flower, it reminded me of my childhood. I remember
around 13 years ago, me and my cousins loves to ride our bicycles. Back then
all of us were happy and worry free. We play for the whole day, racing each
other, we talked about our future. We used to make fun of our youngest cousin,
he said he wanted to be an astronomer, and the rest of us didn’t really know
what astronomer does, we laugh at him, saying that all he will be doing is to
write book for star sign. But I don’t know from what time onward, we started to
lost interest in bike riding. We meet less and less probably got hold up by our
homework. Slowly our gathering change from once per week to once per month,
then once every few months, and now perhaps once a year. Don’t know from what
time, we started to face questions and expectations in life. Aunties and uncles
start asking whether we have got a girlfriend/boyfriend, then when we are going
to get married, if you happened to ‘achieve’ the first two, they will ask you
when you will have kids. I guess this is call grown up, and without knowing, my
youth have slip by already. The cousin that we laugh at, he is now already
married and he became a civil engineer. What was once his dream is now
completely forgotten, and we have all got to the age where we need to be
responsible for others. We always seem to feel that there is tomorrow, so we can
just be lazy today and make it up tomorrow. But without knowing, we push and
push and we have now completely missed the time for it. I once thought that me
and all my cousins could go on a trip, no adults (as in our parents) just the
seven of us. But it seems impossible now, we all have obligations, some of us
have our own family to take care of, some have health problem that make it
difficult to travel, others are just too busy with work, all of these make it
hard for the trip to become possible. But I am glad that the seven of us still
keep in touch and are still close friends. These make me think of the song “童年時”
by Leslie Cheung. Although the song is about love, but it mention that their
childhood memories have imprinted in their heart. The direct English translation
of the title is “Childhood time”.
The
lyrics of the song are about love. The protagonist said in childhood, him and
her always see each other before sunrise. They both have feeling toward each
other. He wonders when he would be able to see her again before sunrise; every
day and every night he would think about this question. In their childhood,
they like to walk into alley in their village and she would ask him to pick
some flowers for her. He wonders when he would be able to go to alley again; every
time he saw flowers, he would think of her. In their childhood, they play on
the swing and wanted to climb the moon; she wanted him to hang his heart on the
sky (in a way this means to show his love to her). He wonders when he would be
able to play swing with her to get to the moon; every time he gazes at starts
he thought of her. In their childhood, they engraved their dreams onto a tree;
she once said that their heart will always be one. He wonders when they would
be able to revisit the tree, and see whether these two hearts would be able to
stay as one forever. Hope you will like the song.
The
song that I chose for today is “只怕不再遇上” by Leslie Cheung and Elisa
Chan. From memory this song was very popular, and it is one of the classic
these days. The direct English translation of the title is “worry that we will not
meet again”.
The
lyrics of the song are about love. The male protagonist decided to break up
with the female protagonist. He is sorry that he do this to her. She accepted
it, but she said that she still love him. She wishes to be in love with him
again. He said that he understand is a pain to her, but he wishes that she could understand his pain as well. She said if they do
meet again, she will still love him. So this is a song about a couple who don't wanted to be separated, but for some reason they have to be apart. Hope you will like the song.
The
song that I chose for today is “Monica” by Leslie Cheung. Yesterday was Leslie’s
10th death anniversary. To memories him, I have chosen one of Leslie’s songs
that I think it could partly represent Leslie. This song came out in 1984, it
was a big hit back then, a very energetic song. Note that like many other songs
in the 80’s, this one is also a Chinese cover version of a Japanese song. The
original is call “モニカ” sung by Kikkawa Koji (吉川晃司).
The
lyrics of the song are rather simple; it is about the protagonist thanks her ex-girlfriend
for leaving him. It start off telling us that before they broke up, his
ex-girlfriend gave him everything. But back then, he didn’t treasure it and
look down at her. Now that she had left him, he felt guilt about it. He now
realises that no one could replace her place in his heart and he started to see
how bad as a person he was. It is too late now to turn back as she had already
found her love one. So he thanks her for what she did, and thanks her for
changing him as he now see the things differently. Now he can only keep his
love to her in his heart. Hope you will like the song. I have also linked the
original Japanese version below.
The
song that I chose for today is “大熱” by Leslie Cheung. It is so hot
today, so I thought I would match chose a song with the word hot in it. This
song was published in the album that shares the same name as the song. It was one
of the first albums that I got by Leslie. I bought the album because back then
I quite like this song (well, I actually found this song quite out of Leslie’s
personality, different to his usual), but the real reason is that I saw the
album in a second hand CD shop and it was selling for 10 Hong Kong dollar, that
was very cheap (yet, it really just the CD and the booklet. The original
packaging and the box was broken, but the CD was in perfect condition.) The
direct English translation of the title is “Big heat”.
I
found the lyrics are a bit complex to understand. Though I think the main
message of the song is to say how powerful love could be. It starts of by
saying that “falling in love is like jumping off a cliff. I wanted to hug you
until you are rotten. Loving this world would not be as great as loving you.
Now when we are in love, I get so powerful, our love could melt metals and
rocks. This heat is like it has been generated by overlapping the equator. The more
we love the hotter it gets.”
Back
in the time when this album came out, Leslie was seen as a bit weird, people thought
that he might have a bit of mental problem. So the music video of this song is
very different to any usual Hong Kong music videos. Anyway, hope you will like
the song.
