26th Nov 2016 (今天我 – Jan Lam)

The song for today is “今天我” by Jan Lam. Jan is part of Soft Hard, but he had been working solo for a long time. The direct English translation of the title is “Today me”.

The lyrics of this song actually draws from many songs, these included “海闊天空”, “抗戰二十年”, “年少無知”, “光輝歲月”(I am surprise that I haven't wrote a post on this song yet as it is one of Beyond's signature songs. So this will be tomorrow's song :D ) and “無盡”. Apart from the last song, the rest were either sung or melody was written by members of Beyond. These songs are all about growing up. This song by Jan basically draw lyrics from these songs and connected them to form a new song that have a similar theme. Note that the phase “today me (今天我)” is the first lyrics of “海闊天空” and it is a very signature of the song, most people will instantly recognise the song just by these 3 (Chinese) words. The protagonist said: “Today Me, is singing today me. Tomorrow me, once again singing today me. Who haven’t given up the dreams in their heart. Then you and I have fought for twenty years. I started this endless journey, growing up in the glory days, hugging Ka Kui (the leader, the key vocal singer and the main song writer of Beyond. He is still a legend and remained in many people’s heart despite he had passed away over 20 years ago). I only know that live is a lead down, only knows that life is endless compromises. Oh no, oh no, oh no. Believe, believe, believe. How nice to be young, holding to my freedom in the storm. Dreams, who could have achieved. Today me. I have already started this endless journey, grew up in this glory days, keeping my dreams as wide as the sea and sky. Woo. Tomorrow me, oh no.” I usually don’t like Jan’s song too much, but I found this one quite touching and I like the melody. So hope you will like it as much as I do.

11th Nov 2015 (川保久齡大戰山本耀司 – Soft Hard)

The song for today is “川保久齡大戰山本耀司” by Soft Hard. This is a reader request (or should I said challenge :p ) This is a very famous song from soft hard, the lyrics are full of fashion brands name. The direct English translation of the title is “Kawakubo Rei battling Yamamoto Yoji”. Note that Kawakubo Rei in Japanese is川久保玲 not 川保久齡 (even though they sounds very similar with the two middle word switch places). Kawakubo Rei is the creator of the Japanese fashion brand “Comme des Garçons” and Yamamoto Yoji is also a famous Japanese fashion designer.

The lyrics of the song are based around fashion brands. It said: “Friend, why were you late this morning? You went to find Kawakubo Rei or Yamamoto Yoji. Of cause you went to Central (a business/high class district in Hong Kong) to find Joyce (also is a brand), then went next door to Jur Jur Armani (referring to Giorgio Armani). I blindly worship all the international famous brands. Found the female sales that I know the beast, get discount then count money. Thanks for the sixty seven thousand, and return twenty cents. I only bought a T-shirt that was over size, on it printed a very large “C”. So what brand is this? It is a super brand that come from Italy. It’s call Italiano plus He no mor eat chi. I keep nodding my hear pretending that I got a lot of taste. Ready to turn around to buy Issey Miyake (another fashion designer), but he said tomorrow morning, and I got so angry. All these brand, wearing them on like as if I am a yuppies. My boss said that I am naïve, all these brand, must need to have a gold A.E. (referring to American Express). I keep prepaying, JPG got crazy design. A fish tank over the head, just like a monster prince. Wearing Comme des Garçons but went to catch a bus, wearing a paper bad and call myself a designer. With Levi’s 501, putting on a pair of Dr. Martin felt like I walked faster. Some point back in time, all youngster wear Bally. Making a comeback, there is also Kickers. For day to day stock, I will go to UNY. Daimaru (a Japanese department store) got expensive ice cream mocha (a ice cream type desert). Tokio Kumagai batteling Issey Miyaki. Comme Ca Du Mode fighting British Colony. C.P. Company win Yohji in the dream. Bennetton’s brother called Bossini (a brand in Hong Kong). I will always remember the Esprit on Hing Fat Street.Really all these brands are just fantasy. All these brand, money will spent easily. Wearing them make you look better? All these brands, really you just brows them, buying more and I will become a beggar. If I pretend to be a designer, then I should go to Headquarters to find High Jackie. Perm a beautiful heair to pretend as Terrence Trent D’arby. But who would have thought that my hair turn out to be like my idol Heath, also looks a bit like that Dutch Gullit. After perming my hair, of cause I need to have a party. After going to Soho, I go to JJ’s. They said members only. I said I got face, I know Mr crazy could you let me in? They kick me across the bay. I am full of famous brands and they still treat me like this. So how to be a successful yuppies? So really all these are just materialistic. If you are too into it, you will become numb. As a person, you shouldn’t get too into toys. You got to know when to stop.” Hope you will like the song.

8th Aug 2015 (山頂嘅朋友 – Grasshopper and Soft hard)

The song for today is “山頂嘅朋友” by Grasshopper and Soft hard. The direct English translation of the title is “Friends at the mountain peak”, this is a line that many singers say (the one that say this the most is Alan Tam) when they have a concert, they referred to the audiences that are very high up as friends at the mountain peak.

the lyrics of the song uses the relationship between fans and idol to describe the friendship of most modern days friendship . It said: “A, B, C, D area, the best of this world. Sitting so far away, the distance between you and me. You got your way to conquer and I got my fortress. Arrived here and become an army. This army got five fortresses (I guess it is referring to the total of 5 members of Grasshopper and soft hard). There was one that proposes an idea, another go against it. Party become arguing, cold eye sight challenging witty. Without much to say, we become a glass of pure water. Really we had actually worked together more than twenty years. Even if we had argued, at the end we will treat it like nothing. Going with my idea or your idea, arguing become cheering to make my own electric generator. Friends at the mountain peak, let’s get excited and wave your hand. When you give out your helping hand, you will all become good friend. When you step out the door, you will get onto your own car to your own home. Said good bye and said it would be enough to just call each other. 14th Oct 2012 (廣播道Fans殺人事件 – Soft Hard)

The song that I chose for today is “廣播道Fans殺人事件” by Soft Hard. Soft Hard is a performance group in Hong Kong, they don’t just sing they actually work on many difference things. At the beginning, dating back to the 1989, the two member of the group Jan Lam and Eric Kot worked together in a radio station and they had their own program. Later on they started their singing career. At the same time, they move into TV shows and stars in movies. Nowadays, both of the members got their own clothing brand, and they are seen as one of the leading fashion figure. The song that I chose for today is one of their most popular song. The English translation of the title is “Broadcast Drive’s Fans murdering case”.

This is rather a fun song. Although the title might sound very serious, but the lyrics of the song actually talks about how crazy fans can get when they see their idol. Broadcast Drive is a road in Hong Kong. Up to late 80’s many of the media head quarter were located there (3 TV stations and 2 radio stations), so making it very common to see a start passing by. There used to be many fans just waiting outside these companies just to see their idols. The lyrics of the song tell us that fans are important to stars as they a measure of how popular a star is. Also it tells us when these fans see their idol, they go uncontrollable. Hope you will enjoy the song.
