15th Aug 2014 (初戀/First love – Danny Chan)

The song for today is “初戀” by Danny Chan. Danny was very popular back in the 80’s, though he passed away in the early 90’s (his death still remains as a mystery). Back to the song, there are two versions to this song, one in Cantonese, the other in English. The direct English translation of the title is “First love”, which is the same as the English version, as they both revolve around the same topic for the lyrics.

The lyrics of the song are about love. The protagonist opened his eyes and saw that there is noting that could compare to that day. Seeing her every day, too happy. He is willing to capture every day. The rain in spring is soft, at that side of the road, let the rain splash. The rain drop on his heart, making it sweet, just likes the arrow from Cupid. Let the relationship grow naturally, as love will never end. Just finished the old dream, and there would be new reams for you to complete. But regardless, you will always miss first love. Thinking about yesterday, you realised you have been through so many happy moment. You are annoyed that love always changes often, a sadness hiding behind happiness. There is nothing they could talk about now, if there is traffic, then they must be able to keep talking non-stop. If the two hearts couldn’t be connected, then seeing each other is just the same as not seeing.  Just let the relationship grow naturally, as love will never end. Finished the old dream, and there would be new reams for you to complete. But regardless, you will always miss first love. Hope you will like the song. I have also linked to the English version, the lyrics are different, but the ideas are very similar.

11th Mar 2014 (有了你 – Danny Chan)

The song that I chose for today is “有了你” by Danny Chan. I know of this song through Eason Chan, when he sung it in one of his earlier concert. This song was the theme song for a movie. The direct English translation of the title is “Got you”.

The lyrics of the song are about love, it basically describe the protagonist felt very happy when he got the girl that he likes as his girlfriend. At the start of the song, the protagonist said that when he is with her, he felt that the world feel more humour. He wanted to see her every day and he will not be stop by thunderstorm. Without seeing her for a second, he felt empty. When he is with her now, he feel relax. So happy that he think even if he got trip over he will feel fun. He wanted to become bird and fish with her so that they could fly and swim freely.  Moving their wings, so freely, and breath the fresh air; swimming, and realised that the sea and lakes are so beautiful. This wil help them to remove the worries that they had. Hope you will like the song.

11th Jul 2013 (冬戀 – Danny Chan/The End of the World – The Carpenters)

The song that I chose for today is “冬戀” by Danny Chan. This song is the Cantonese cover of “The End of the World” by The Carpenters. The direct English translation of the title is “Winter love”.

The lyrics of the song are about love. It begins with the protagonist said that no matter how tired he is he can’t sleep at night. It felt like there was a mist locked on his eyes. He is scare that he would think about that night in winter. He remembers that in the wind, she walked away from him. Since then he always had a sad face and was stuck in loneliness. He is worry that he will fall back to that winter again. He resist to gaze at stars as he feel that the stars are laughing at him because he is holding on a dream that will not come true. He always tries to his eyes that are so tired from crying. If they are not meant to be together, then why there is full moon. He felt that he no longer be able to distinguish between cold and warm, and he felt that his breathing had stop since they last kissed. Hope you will like the song.

7th Jul 2013 (旅程 – Danny Chan/そねぞねの秋 – Tanimura Shinji (谷村新司))

The song that I chose for yesterday was “旅程” by Danny Chan. This is the chinese cover of a Japanese song “そねぞねの秋” by Tanimura Shinji (谷村新司). The direct English translation of the title is “Journey”.

The lyrics of the song are about life. It begins by saying that we all travel fast in our life and this journey through life could never move backward. Every day we tried to climb higher and higher and we accepted all the difficulties that come at us. Let hope that every relationship will be beautiful, regardless of the season. Let things turn old. We will keep all the good memories in our heart and hope that we will always be together. Happiness is surrounding us. If trouble come and find me, I will accept it. Today I might not see the end, but tomorrow I will finish these works. Let hope that we can smile when we travel through our life and search for our freedom. It is because you are traveling with me, I felt happiness never ends. Hope you will enjoy the song. I have also linked to the original Japanese version for comparison.

3rd Apr 2013 (幾分鐘的約會 – Danny Chan)

The song that I chose for today is “幾分鐘的約會” by Danny Chan. This song is very old, it was from around 1980 when Hong Kong first got it underground railway system. The direct English translation of the title is “A few minutes date”.

The lyrics of the song are very simple. The song is about the protagonist catch the train every day and he meets this girl. He knows that he had already fallen in love with her. The trip only lasted for a few minute, but he enjoyed it a lot. Every day they talked to each other, although their trip is short, but day by day they got to know each other well, he feels that she understand him well. One day, he was waiting for her, but she didn’t appear. It wasn’t a rainy nor a windy day, so he wonder why she suddenly disappeared. He waited for her for the next few days, yet she still didn’t show up. He felt that the god of love is making a joke on him, and this short date seems to be over. He felt unhappy, as he thinks that their story haven’t even reach the climax but already faced its end. Hope you will enjoy the song.

22nd Mar 2013 (一生何求 – Danny Chan)

The song that I chose for today is “一生何求” by Danny Chan. I love this song when I was a kid. It was a theme song of a TV drama and I guess that’s why it imprinted in my head. I can’t remember what’s the drama was about, but I remember who star in it, because at one point I thought this song was sung by the actor rather than Danny. The direct English translation of the title is “what do you wish for in your life” (is a bit hard to translate, but this is the closest that I can translate it).

The lyrics of the song are about a person reviewing his life. The lyrics is a bit hard to translate as it is rather abstract, hope you will understand my translation. He said that time had passed by, there were thing that he had in his hand but now it’s gone, but the thing that he never though he would get is with him. So he wonders where he has achieved what he wanted, and he said that it is hard to judge. So what are we chasing after in our life, we always make decision between giving up or getting it in our hand. We spent our life chasing after it, but before we can touch it, it has already run away. So what are we looking for in our life, we are always lost and can’t see through our purpose and we just never thought that what we lost is all that we got.

The lyrics are very abstract, but what it is trying to say is that in our life we might have many goals. While we try to achieve these goals, some we might achieve it, some might not. We might have success before, but then we lost it. But losing what we got might get us something that we never thought of. So in our life how can we judge whether we are successful or not as environment and perspective changes all the time. Hope you will like the song.

13th Mar 2013 (不再問究竟 – Danny Chan)

The song that I chose for today is “不再問究竟” by Danny Chan. This is a classic from Danny. This song is very old, however, a few years ago, Edmond Leung make a new song that uses the same or a similar melody and continued the story of the song. I will reserve that song for another day. The direct English translation of the title is “Will not ask why again”.

The lyrics of the song are about breaking up. At the start of the song, the protagonist was gazing at the sky, counting the stars. Standing in the street by himself and thinking of her. Suddenly, a kid came out from nowhere stepping on his shadow, and asked him why his eyes are red and swollen like he just cried. He forced a smile on his face and gently rubs his eyes and explains to the kid that he got tears in his eyes because there was some dust got into his eyes. He looked at the sky again, realising that it will be very difficult for him to calm down tonight. The kid next to him was so bored that he starts jumping rope. The kid asked why he gazed at the stars, is it because he wanted to catch the stars. Again he rubs his eyes and smile at the kid. Now it leaves him no choice but to play with this kid in hope that he will not ask again. Hope you will like the song.

13th Dec 2012 (漣漪 – Danny Chan)

The song that I chose for today is “漣漪” by Danny Chan. The English translation of the title is “Ripple”. I was walking along the sea side today and I saw the sea got lot of wave. Seeing how the waves interact with each other reminded me of this song.

The lyrics of the song are about love. The protagonist told us that his live was like a lake, very still. His girlfriend is like the ripple in the lake, making lot of disturbance, creating happiness and many happy memories. Listening to this song make me think of how our life interact with each other. We are like waves in the sea, many wave would travel in the same direction, following a patent. But sometime, another set of wave would come and interact with us. We might join together to form a bigger wave or we might just passed through each other like we have never meet. Hope you will enjoy this song.

31st Oct 2012 (喝采 – Danny Chan)

The song that I chose for today is “喝采” by Danny Chan. Danny was very famous in the 80’s. However, he was found to be unconscious in his house in 1992 and passed away in 1993. This song is one of his most popular songs. The English translation of the title is “Cheer”.

This song is full of positive energy. The lyrics of the song tell us that we need to feel positive about our future. We need not to be unhappy in our life, we can escape unhappiness. As long as we stay confident and hope that our future will be bright, then our future will be bright. Hope you will enjoy this song and hope that it will give you some positive energy.
