15th May 2014 (生日快樂 – Grace Ip/生日快樂 – Eric Kwok)

The song for today is “生日快樂” by Grace Ip. This song is also sing by Eric Kwok, the song writer and Grace’s husband. I think Grace is the original singer, but I guess most people are more familiar with Eric’s version. Both versions are quite different in feeling, while Grace’s version sounds more sad, Eric’s version sounds more happy (but note that the lyrics are different).  The direct English translation of the title is “Happy birthday”.

The lyrics of the song are about love. The protagonist said that at dawn, the glass broke and the candle is blow offed like the air has all burned out. The perfume that she put on, is now all turned into steam. Even if it was very strong, she didn’t remember that he smelled it. Happy birthday, she let that exciting her in the mirror to think about the protagonist of today. She wishes that he is with his love. She also wishes that she could memorise this moment. Happy birthday, she just wanted her empty body to be filled by happiness again. She wishes that this signal could be fallen into his pocket and helps her to kiss him on his shoulder. At dawn, the glass broke and the candle is blow offed like the air has all burned out. The perfume that she put on, is now all turned into steam. Even if it was very strong, she didn’t remember that he smelled it. Happy birthday, she wishes that her empty soul could dream about the protagonist today. She wishes that after their happy time, she could be fallen in love with him, but now she is too tired and stayed in bed. . Happy birthday, she just wanted her empty body to be filled by happiness again. She wishes that this signal could be fallen into his pocket and helps her to kiss him on his shoulder. Hope you will like the song. I have also linked Eric’s version, so that you can have a better idea of how different the two song are.

4th Sep 2013 (應承 – Eric Kwok)

The song that I chose for today is “應承” by Eric Kwok. The direct English translation of the title is “Promise”.

The lyrics of the song are about marriage. It basically is a list of promises that the protagonist agree to his future wife. He promises her that things will only get better and that he will be truthful to her. He will let her achieve her dreams. He promises her that even when the day the world comes to an end, he will not leave her and put her in the first place. Hope you will like the song.

1st Apr 2013 (冇腳雀仔 – Eric Kwok and at17)

The song that I chose for today is “冇腳雀仔” by Eric Kwok and at17. I didn’t notice about this song until a few days ago when I accidently clicked on it. The melody is very simple (though the lyrics are complex). When I listen to it, it give me a sense of freshness and I feel quite relax. The direct English translation of the title is “Bird without legs”.

The lyrics of the song are about life. The lyrics are quite complex and I found it hard to do a line by line translation so I will just give a brief description of the meaning. The lyrics mentioned that there is a bird, it spent all it strength to fly forward to the most glamorous place on Earth. The bird just keeping looking to the future, thinking where to go next and didn’t seems to care about where it is now. The bird start to aged, and it realised that the world that it live in started to change. It tried to remember where it been to, but it got no memory of it and no proof of where it had gone before. Now, where does the bird wanted to go? It started to realise that it misses its childhood time, but there is no way it can go back now.

I found the lyrics are very strong. It basically tried to tell us that in our life, we just keep trying to move forward, chasing after our dreams. But in the process, we seems to forget about our surrounding, we don’t seems to enjoy the world that we are living in. So one day, when we stop, we might realise that we still haven’t reached our dreams, but at the same time, we have no memory of our past, we have never enjoyed our life. By then, we might want to go back in time to enjoy our life, but it is too late, as we can never go back. Hope you will enjoy the song.
