8th Jun 2016 (200度 – Sally Yip/ Material Girl – Madonna)

The song for today is “200度” by Sally Yip. This song is the Cantonese cover version of Madonna’s Material Girl. The English translation of the title is “200 degrees”.

The lyrics of the song are about love. The protagonist said: “Until last night, I always found that predicting the weather is hard. Sometime warm, something cold, the temperature changes like a dream. But tonight, I suddenly feel that predicting the weather is very easy. If you are willing to hug me tight, and uses love in place of words. The world will have temperature at two hundred degrees, so warm that it is about to explode when you hugged me.  Do you know that the temperature will be two hundred degrees? So warm that it will explode just like my body. Tonight, even those eyeball could write words. Then it will defiantly write a love poem, using love as verbs. If you understand, then the temperature from this moment will rise easily. If you are willing to hug me tight, and uses love in place of words. The world will have temperature at two hundred degrees, so warm that it is about to explode when you hugged me.  Do you know that the temperature will be two hundred degrees? So warm that it will explode just like my body. Tonight, it will be so warm that it will explode, come and hug. Tonight we will love until it exploded. Tonight it will be so warm that it will exploded. No need to talk. Tonight it will be so warm that it will exploded. If you understand, then the temperature from this moment will rise easily. If you are willing to hug me tight, and uses love in place of words. You scare of high temperature? I don’t.” Hope you will like the song. As usual, I have also linked the original.

11th May 2016 (為何 – Sally Yip)

The song for today is “為何” by Sally Yip. This is a reader request. The direct English translation of the title is “Why”.

The lyrics are about love. The protagonist said: “Why this moment I am still wondering around at the middle of the road. Why I still wanted to see you now. Why this moment I have forgotten all the lingering that we had from the past, wishing all the thing from the past will become ashes. Why this heart is easy to leave but hard to return. Why now still said no regret? Why this moment gazing at you there are no words between us? Just wishes to be drunk again tonight. Why, why look at me and I said I am tired. Every drop of tears become ashes, why still face me with your back? Why, why still want me to give you a chance? Why when the dream starts to turn into ashes, you finally decided to chase it back? If I decided to leave, then I wouldn’t think back on it. When goodbye, when goodbye, don’t leave behind a word to flow around at night. Even decided not to regret this life, but asain asked why someone decided to regreat again. Ah. Why, why still want me to meet with you again? Forget it, no need to cheers as I will never turn back. Why, why hated you so much? Just because you gave me thousands times the pain that I gave you today.” Hope you will like the song.

23rd Apr 2016 (女人的弱點 – Sally Yip/You are free – CHAGE and ASKA)

The song for today is “女人的弱點” by Sally Yip. This is a reader request. This song was a theme song for a movie, it is also the Cantonese cover version of “You are free” by a Japanese singing group CHAGE and ASKA. The English translation of Sally’s cover version is “Woman’s weakness”.

The lyrics of the song are about love. The protagonist said: “After saying goodbye with you I need to live my life again. But for some reason, I keep thinking of every day in the past. We have gone our separate, yet why still mount of the past? Can’t believe that we have been apart, still wishes that I could see you if I turn around. You see me again, called me again, fallen in love with you again. Clear in my heart, known beforehand that this love will be more difficult. But I couldn’t cut it, no matter who arrive, it will be messy. Who want it to last forever, just think about it after fallen in love, even that this life might only have bitter love. So loving you too deeply have already become an extreme. It is hard to use logic to solve the problem. So every woman has a weak point. Wanted to resist but got a soft heart. You see me again, called me again, fallen in love with you again. Clear in my heart, known beforehand that this love will be more difficult. Why in such a big world, I am tangled up with you? Felt that everything is changing, but only my heart still doesn’t know when to give up. You once said that fallen in love with you is like fallen into a fire pit. Today we are together, tomorrow we separated, as you got your love. But I couldn’t cut it, no matter who arrive, it will be messy. Who want it to last forever, just think about it after fallen in love, even that this life might only have bitter love. Meeting you again tonight, best not to talk about tomorrow. Perhaps it is my fault, loving you too deeply is my weakness. With you tonight, I treat it as if it is forever, as everything is like a dream. Love me, love me, hug this relation.” Hope you will like the song. As usual, I have linked to the original Japanese version as well.

7th Feb 2015 (與你傾訴 – Sally Yip)

The song for today is “與你傾訴” by Sally Yip. I heard this song on radio a few days ago and I had no memories of that song at all despite it was released in 1994. The direct English translation of the title is “Talking to you”.

The lyrics of the song are about life. She said that she can feel that in between her lonely heart, she wanted to talk to him, hoping to relieve some of the messiness in her heart. It is desire in her heart that makes her proud. Cared about that, care it? Why care how high it could fly? But in real life, the pace is so fast. Days past, days go, forthcoming are many many roads. He asked whether she got tired from searching. She wonders whether he knows that that day she reached it. He asked how to achieve it so normally. To dance with the wind, happiness will arrive every day.  Dreams at silence night don’t need to be accused much. Talking to him, it actually felt like that happiness just arrived from her side. Hope you will like the song.

12th Dec 2014 (紅塵 – Sally Yip)

The song for today is “紅塵” by Sally Yip. The direct English translation of the title is “Red dust” ,but in Chinese, this phase means “mortal world”.

The lyrics of the song are about life. The protagonist said that she is still searching her dream, but perhaps her dream had already disappeared. Right or wrong; happy or dad; laughter or pain, all disappeared in the phantom. The closer it is, the more burry it gets’ the further it is away, the stronger it feel. Who could predict the gain or loses. The mortal world is full of illusion, and it will eventually be empty. Don’t say God is making fun of you; the sun goes and will return. The mountain is still the same, but many rains and storms had pasted. The mortal world is full of reflection. Laugh it all out and it will become like a dream. Fate started and gone; flower blossom and then fallen. Craziness, sadness and laughter are all blown away by the wind. In the dream you can control all your sadness. When you get together, it is hard to have the same dream. Said goodbye and meet again. In the dream you can control all your sadness. Hope you will like the song.

T: Perhaps we care too much now. Y: Perhaps we couldn’t be passionate all the time, but at least try to be truthful once. C: When it feels like it is gone, sometime it felt like it appeared again. Stop dreaming about it, but then you will try not to stop it. Y: It is not easy to get to meet the right guy, so let’s hope that you can get along. C: If you are together just for the fame, then you should stop trying to stick together. Y: Being a female, you should learn to make decision. Hope you will like the song.

5th Aug 2014 (失去夢的少女 – Sally Yip/恋人よ – Mayumi Itsuwa’s (五輪真弓))

The song for today is “失去夢的少女” by Sally Yip. This is another Chinese cover version of Mayumi Itsuwa’s (五輪真弓) “恋人よ”, though this time around it is the Mandarin cover version. This song came out in 1981, around the same time as the other cover version. The direct English translation of the title is “The girl who lost her dreams”.

The lyrics of the song are about love.  The protagonist said that just like every young girl, she sung love songs when she was lonely. Even though back then she didn’t know who it was for, but he appeared in front of her. Perhaps he wasn’t intended, but she took it as real, she even keeps their memories as treasure. Even though the memories are great, but she is the type of person that is not daring to think back, because a dream that had passed away have got no way to search it back. A girl that lost her dreams is as helpless as a bird that left it nest. Dreaming to be able to write the next love story, but she still hasn’t manage to found the ending of the story. Hope you will like the song. As usual, I have linked to the original Japanese version and the other Chinese cover version that share the same melody.

1st Apr 2014 (傷逝 – Sally Yip)

The song that I chose for today is “傷逝” by Sally Yip. The direct English translation of the title is “Mourning”.

The lyrics of the song are about love. The protagonist said that the movie was on air in the 19 century, back then, she and her boyfriend only have each other in their eyes. They were very happy and never prepared to be apart. All they wanted is to have good weather forever. But thank God that they don’t hate each other now. They even called each other when they are out with their partner. They even talk about movies that they aren’t interested, but they avoid seeing each other. Who in the world could avoid mourning, but is good bye really that scary. Too many relationships have been imprinted in her heart, but none could match the guy. Who is still worry about ambiguous relationship? Is judging by others really that scary? She is only worry that she isn’t that interested in him even if they hug. Then their most valuable memories would be wasted. Please don’t waste it. She is not daring to think about how they meet in nineteen something. She had got happiness, but didn’t end up with him, only result in a best friend that she loves most. But thanks God that they don’t need love anymore. When they worry, they even left their partner behind and called. They even admitted that their faces had changed a lot so they tried to avoid meeting up. Hope you will like the song.

27th Feb 2014 (黎明不要来 – Sally Yip)

The song that I chose for today is “黎明不要来” by Sally Yip. This is a famous song from Sally and it was a theme song of a famous ghost/love movie. The direct English translation of the title is “Dawn, please don’t come”.

The lyrics of the song are about love. The protagonist hope that dawn will not arrive so that her dream could live on. She hopes that her heart could be followed her love, and order the soul of her love one to collect them. Could you please ask Dawn not to come again, so that the romance could live on. The touching feeling from the wind could come to her in the cold rain. Slowly to break through the barrier. She tries to stop the sun to break them up and hope that they could stay together over the night. Please order dawn not to show himself again, so that the romance could never be replaced. She wanted to hug him in the dark, so please don’t let the sun light to come through. Hope you will like the song.

15th Aug 2013 (秋去秋來 – Sally Yip)

The song that I chose for today is “秋去秋來” by Sally Yip. This is one of Sally’s classic songs. The direct English translation of the title “Autumn come, autumn goes”.

The lyrics of the songs are about love. It is autumn, and the red and yellow leaves are lying on the protagonist’s window. She is thinking of him, whether he would feel cold. She wonders why it was him who get her thinking, and why every time she think of him, she feel pain. It’s the cold autumn again, and the never ending sadness autumn. She wonders whether he knows that after he left, she has been thinking of him. People always ask her why she is waiting for him and how could she not fallen in love with another person. She told herself that forgetting him makes sense, but every time she saw fallen leaves, she thought of him. So she rather there will be no autumn. Every time in autumn, she cries. She wonders when she will be able to see him again. She wonders to what age she will finally accept the fact that their relationship had ended. Every time autumn comes by, she feel empty, the only thing that keep her going is to believe that they will meet each other again. Hope you will like the song.

23th Jul 2013 (情人知己 – Sally Yip)

The song that I chose for today is “情人知己” by Sally Yip. The direct English translation of the title is “Lover, friend”

The lyrics of the song are about love and friendship. It begins with the protagonist thinking of her past. She remembers that she used to chat to this friend a lot. They wish that their friendship could stay forever. But she never thought that her friend actually fallen in love with her, and that day, she expressed his love to her. That moment, she didn’t know what to say, she didn’t want to lie, but she didn’t want to say goodbye either, so she drink another glass of wine. No wonder people said that if you can’t be friends you can’t be a good boyfriend, that night she truly understand that statement. But now as they are already friend and she didn’t know whether they could take the extra step to become partner. Now they are awake and realised that their friendship still hasn’t change. She wishes that she can travel back in time to avoid the incident so that both of them could feel better. But through his eyes, she didn’t know how to reject his request. So she still doesn’t know how to distinguish between friendship and love. She is worry that one day when their love ends, they will not see each other again. Hope you will like the song.

2nd Aug 2012 (珍重 – Sally Yip)

The song that I chose for today is “珍重” by Sally Yip. I came across this song yesterday, and I found it very powerful, so I thought I should share my thought on this song on this blog. The direct English translation of the title is “value”, but the actual meaning of the title is “all the best”.

This song is about a pair of couple have to split apart because one of them have to sea. The protagonist can’t really let go of this relationship, she is crying about it and wishing that it will not happen. I guess newer generation is quite hard to imagine this feeling. Back at the time when this song came out (in 1990), it was very popular for people in Hong Kong to immigrate to other country because they were scare of becoming part of China. Of cause, back in those days, there were no internet, and long distance call was very expensive. The only way to get in tough cheaply is to send letter, but there are weeks of lead time and you don’t got to see the instant reaction. So leaving to another country back then pretty much means that most likely you will lose contact with that person. So this song really show that feeling, and it was very common back then for people to experience this as so many people in Hong Kong were immigrating to many different countries. I hope this song could bring back some of your old memory, and I hope you will enjoy it.

9th July 2012 (零時十分 – Sally Yip)

Today’s song is “零時十分” by Sally Yip. The direct English translation of the title is “00:10” that is 12:10am. This is one of the songs that I really like from Sally.

The lyrics are about the protagonist celebrating her birthday by herself. The lyrics goes like this: It’s 12:10am, and she look out the window, she see there are people walking in the rain. She remember that once upon a time, she and her boyfriend was walking in the rain and her boyfriend said to her “Happy Birthday my love one”. But why this time she is sitting here by herself till 2am, looking at the rain outside, holding 2 glasses of cold champagne and saying “Happy Birthday to my love one”. There is only tears and rain to celebrate her birthday with. Now sitting there alone until 6am, holding 2 glasses of warm champagne and saying “happy birthday to me”.

The lyrics are quite sad, and I think Sally fully expressed that feeling in the song. Hope you will enjoy this song.

1st Jul 2012 (祝福 – Sally Yip)

Today’s song is “祝福” by Sally Yip. Sally was quite popular in the 80’s and 90’s, she is the wife of George Lam. The direct English translation of the title is “Wishes”, but this translation is not the best, but it is the best word that I can think of to describe it. In this song the wishes that it is referring to is when someone is leaving, you wish them good luck, it is not referring to something like birthday wishes. This is one of the popular song from Sally and it is also one of my favourite songs.

The lyrics are basically as title, wishing some well. It spent almost half the song describing a beautiful scenery. The description of the scenery make you feel peaceful, then it talks about the past, how the protagonist’s friend had affected her feeling (either good or bad), but everything is over now and she wishes her friend all the best. There is a sense that the protagonist will never see her friend again, so this song was use on TV show quite often when someone passed away or immigrated to another country (because back then there were no internet, so communication was hard. Letter and phone were the only ways, but letter takes a while to reply and phone calls are expensive.)I hope you will enjoy this song.
