The song for today is “想妳的舊名字” by Hacken Lee. This song is the Cantonese cover version of Koji Tamaki’s メロディー. Hacken actually wrote the lyrics of his version himself (using a stage name). The direct English translation of the title is “Thinking of your old name”.

The lyrics of the song are about love, it is about the protagonist thinking of his ex-girlfriend, but knowing that they will probably not be able to be together again. He said: “Accompanying me ok? Just for a second ok? Regardless whether he is in your heart. Trick me ok? Could you just pretend? I only wish that you could once again talk to me softly. Happy? Enjoying work? But in my heart, I still care. Do you know I always think of your old name? Difficult to be together now, but I still wish that we could be together next life. Melody, I don’t want you to stop. The light wind added some sense of autumn. The moon added lovesickness. I still wish that we could be in love once again. Still need to go? Could you delay that? As mentioned yesterday, the song for today is “月蝕” by Ken Choi. This song is the Cantonese cover version of the Japanese song “ワインレッドの心” by Anzen Chitai (安全地帶). The direct English translation of the title is “Lunar eclipse”.

The lyrics of the song are about the protagonist got dumped by his girlfriend and he felt very upset. He said: “When I think of myself, I laugh as I felt that I am too naïve. Got to know myself better and now gaze at the lunar eclipse. Gazing at the sky and slight sigh, he still tries his best to take up these mess, felt as if I am slowly eaten away. Moon is like a good dream, and shouldn’t be analysed whether it was love or just pity. Miracle, miracle, miracle, even if I only got one true friend, it isn’t too bad. But I still couldn’t accept the fluctuation in my heart, it still hurt suddenly. Why, why, why this got to be the memory that need to be clear tonight? The song for today is “酒紅色的心” by Alan Tam. The reason I chose this song for today is because I was going to write a reader request on Ken Choi’s “月蝕” (which I will talk about probably tomorrow). But after listening to the song for the first time, I realised that it uses the same melody as Alan’s “酒紅色的心”. Both of these songs are Cantonese cover version of the Japanese song “ワインレッドの心” by Anzen Chitai (安全地帶) (you might also found this Japanese song under Koji Tamaki (玉置浩二) as he was the lead singer of Anzen Chitai and many of the songs by the band were written by him as well. On top of that, he also had his solo music career which was also successful. So many Anzen Chitai’s songs are sometime classified directly under his name rather than the band name). Since Alan’s version was the one that I heard of first, so I think I should talk about it first. As far as I know, the Japanese title of the song is the same as Alan’s version’s title. The direct English translation of the title “Wine red coloured heart”.

The lyrics of the song use red wine as a metaphor for the woman that the protagonist interested in. He said: “A pair of eyes; the attractive of love. Tasty wine; leaking charm. The bright eyesight is a message, naturally kisses your cheek and forehead, quietly waiting for the fire to relight. Too beautiful, hugging in the dream, this sense of love is surrounding us. Red, red, red; a heart that is so clear just like wine colour. Who eve is loved by you, means the start of happiness, so getting excited is normal. Red wine, red wine, red wine; such a fresh crystal. Leaking true love for whom? A bit embarrassed; the magic of love. The wine rushed into the heart and become a motivation. The love fire has been relit and so should be treasured. How to describe your tenderness, like you have no strength, creating a lot of attraction. Inside is weak and soft, but the outside is tough, I know that the love sense is reigniting. Red, red, red; a heart that is so clear just like wine colour. Who eve is loved by you, means the start of happiness, so happy that they will forget pain. 1st Dec 2013 (李香蘭 – Jacky Cheung/行かないて – Koji Tamaki 玉置浩二)

The song that I chose for today is “李香蘭” by Jacky Cheung. This song is the Chinese cover of a Japanese song called行かないて by Koji Tamaki (玉置浩二). The name of the Chinese version of the song is actually a person’s name. She was Japanese, but was born in China (so technically she is Chinese as well). During World War II she was deported to Japan. (You can read up on her here, she is a very interesting person).

The lyrics of the song are a bit complex complex, I think they are about the protagonist looking back on her life. The song begins with the protagonist telling us that she is thinking of her lover, but she doesn’t know why he is all over her head. She can’t use word to describe her feeling, she uses alcohol to help her out. Cold rainy night and the rain penetrated into the photos. Looking back is like a dream, and she can’t move. She can’t stop herself looking at him, the him in the discolour photos. Ar, it is like the flower that hasn’t turned red, like ice that aren’t cold. It’s like there are many words that he wanted to say, but she can’t hear anything. Ar, is the wine getting stronger or her heart is getting empty? Why she can feel it now? Photos, Where can she travel to the photos. She wishes that she could find the crack in time. At night, she find it hard to find his whereabouts. . Looking back is like a dream, and she can’t move. She tried to avoid looking at him, but his imaged imprinted in her head. Ar, it is like the flower that hasn’t turned red, like ice that aren’t cold. It’s like there are many words that he wanted to say, but she can’t hear anything. Ar, is the wine getting stronger or her heart is getting empty? Why she can feel it now? 8th Nov 2012 (愈想愈無謂 – Eason Chan/ Mr. Lonely - Koji Tamaki 玉置浩二)

The song that I chose for today is “愈想愈無謂” by Eason Chan. This is a very old song, it was produced when Eason was still in his first music company. I think it was one of the songs in his first 3 album. Not too many people know this song, as it wasn’t a song that the music company sent to TV and radio station for promotion. Personally I think it is very good. This song is actually a cover version of “Mr. Lonely” by a famous Japanese singer Koji Tamaki (玉置浩二). If you look back in the music in the 80’s and 90’s many popular songs in Hong Kong were actually cover version of Japanese songs. Perhaps many people didn’t care about the original singer of the Japanese songs, but many of those Chinese cover song were originally sung by Koji Tamaki, either under his name or under his band’s name Anzen Chitai (安全地帶). The English translation of Eason’s version is “More you think about it, more it became unnecessary”

The lyrics of the song are about the protagonist had fallen in love with a person that don’t love him. He could have said good bye to her, but he wanted to drag this on as he don’t want to break up with his girlfriend. He figured out that he actually never made it into her girlfriend list, but it’s too late for him as his girlfriend had already berated him. He have just started to give her everything that he got, but it is at this point he realised that he had fallen in love with the wrong person. He question about this relationship, but he told himself not to think about it, as more he think more unnecessary it became. I hope you will enjoy this song.
