The song for today is “祇有情永在” by Jacky Cheung and Cally Kwong. This is a song requested by a reader of this blog. From memory this song was quit a hit back at the time when it was released. The direct English translation of the title is “Only love will last forever”.

The lyrics of the song are about. It said we no longer know how to tell right from wrong; too lazy to ask how to separate kindness and blame. When everything is like a ‘floating cloud’ (this is a Chinese phrase, meaning things are vague, uncertain) and only love will last forever, then let just remember some love in our heart. Will not ask again whether it is worth loving. In the sea of love, everything is right. Not worry about losing; and not hard to replace, then we can found love even in the sound of wind. Not worry to be separated, even if we do, we would know that the beautiful will remain. So why worry whether there would be an accident as our heart would never change. The song that I chose for today is “忘記你我做不到” by Jacky Cheung. The direct English translation of the title is “Forget you, I can’t do it”. This song was from 1996 and it was very popular back then.

The lyrics of the song are about love. It said, when there is love, there would also be hate, a lot or a little. Having happiness and will also bring you problems, unless you don’t want both. Comparing to your tenderness, everything else became unimportant. Without you, every minutes and seconds become painful. When there is love, there would also be hate, a lot or a little. The song for today is “柯德莉夏萍穿過的鞋” by Priscilla Chan. This is another song from Priscilla’s “情意結” album. The direct English translation of the title is “Shoes that Audrey Hepburn had worn”. I personally think that this song should catch more attention. This song was a side track from the album, but it got a very unusual but easily approachable melody which I think it got the quality to be a hit song.

The lyrics of the song are about love. It said: this pair perhaps is too working style. That pair perhaps could create noise. This pair is suitable to wear for big performance. But which pair will make her walk as elegantly as Audrey Hepburn? This pair is too bright, just like it tried to give out everything, making her looks like she wanted to catch all his attention in one night. That pair perhaps could be put at the display window, but if she wears it, it will make her uncomfortable and feels like her soul leave her body. Yes, she wanted him to fall in love with her. Stepping onto the sky garden, this date perhaps could exchange for a limited amount of warm, but will come will limitless pain. Perhaps he will fly to New York to greet her and make her doesn’t know how to respond. This journey is like traveling from North Point (a place in Hong Kong) to heaven; no matter which shoes that she wears, it will still be far away. Maybe that pair is for her wedding. 9th July 2014 (歌之女 – Denise Ho/Anita Mu)

The song for today is “歌之女” by Denise Ho. This song was from Denise’s “Recollection” album, in which almost all the songs (including this song “歌之女”) were sung by Anita Mu. Anita was Denise singing teacher, and of cause a very successful singer as well. I guess Anita means a lot for Denise so from time to time, Denise will have a song dedicated to Anita. This time is a whole album. I chose focus on Denise version this time because I really like this version, to a certain extent, even more than Anita’s version. I think the emotion that she expressed through this song is deeper and more than Anita’s version. The direct English translation of the title is “Girl of songs”.

I feel that to a certain extent, the lyrics of the song are about the life of Anita. In the original Anita’s version, there were choir singing “Learning to sing, practicing to sing; was accompanied by those songs. Got tired? Got hungry? Singing loudly would make me feel better. Singing at day time, singing at night; haven’t fully understand what is the lyrics are about. Still singing because I wanted you to like me”. This choir is missing in Denise’s version, but it doesn’t affect the song much. The main part said “I remember that little girl singer from the past, she was very thin and small. I remember that she was singing old songs with an old band in the not so high class distract. The theatre was never full, but she keeps singing because she want to fill her stomach. The old cloth looks ok from a distance, but at close inspection they are full of holes. I remember that little girl singer from the past, she likes to see rain flow in the sky. Perhaps she likes to see the rain when it got blow by the wind and their direction become predictable. Maybe one day she will become famous, and she will not be hungry again. I particularly like Denise version, because when she sing “她是我　當天的她今是我 (She is me, that she in the past is me today)”, I feel that she is continuing Anita’s legacy. Anita had done many charity works and had built a very good foundation for future comer in Hong Kong music industry. When Denise sings that line, I feel that she is making the promise to continue Anita’s work, to give back to the society. That is why I like this version more as it added an extra layer of feeling toward the song. But of cause, without the original and Anita’s work, this version would not feel this way, so I have also linked to Anita’s original version for you to enjoy.

The song for today is “無人之境” by Eason Chan. This song is a request from a fellow reader of the blog during my holiday. The direct English translation of the title is “Unhindered”.

The lyrics of the song are about the protagonist stated a relationship with someone that he couldn’t let anyone else knows. The protagonist tried to calm himself down through his rational side, but as he is still young, he was easily tempted and goes against his destiny. The wildness inside him is fully awakened for her. The worse sin in this world is call easily touched emotionally, but he loves this sin. This was a big news, but sadly the world is cruel. He couldn’t let any of this slip out of his mouth, there will be no one witnessing this love. They wanted to do many wile things just to fulfil their ambition; he wanted to lie and not blink his eyes, as this love is inhuman. If the world goes into a big lie, friends would be hard to find out. If he secretly contacts her whenever he got time, he would be challenging ethics. If they meet a few years ago, then they wouldn’t be facing these challenges. He believes that if they keep going like this there would be any future for them, but he just wanted this relationship to keep going. If all of a sudden the environment of their date has changed to like an underground castle, he will still found that it warm. He wanted to hold her hands and walk on the bridge, but he can still think straight. Moon, still not willing to shine on them both. The two of them is like happily together, living in a different dimension. So romantic that they will get fatal disease together. He doesn’t want to explain, just want to react. 7th July 2014 (把悲傷看透時 – Priscilla Chan)

The song that I chose for today is “把悲傷看透時” by Priscilla Chan. Priscilla is one of my favourite singers. She recently had a concert in Hong Kong, but sadly I was not in Hong Kong during that time so I missed it. This song was from 2003, from one of her lesser known album “情意結”. When that album first came out in 2003, I wasn’t really a fans of Priscilla’s song, so I didn’t bought it. A few years down the track, one day, I suddenly wanted to listened to the songs that I grow up with and realised that so many of the songs that I liked were sung by Priscilla. That’s started my collection of Priscilla’s albums. Currently I am only a few albums away from collecting all her albums (but they are ultra hard to find….). This album “情意結” were one of them as it was produced at a time when she wasn’t too popular, so hard core fans will probably wouldn’t sell it and others who doesn’t like her too much wouldn’t bought it in the first place. Lucky, late last year, the music company decided to reissue the album. Although it is selling at a higher price as they now turn it into 24 Gold version for better sound quality, I bought it when I first saw it as it was so hard to find the original version. So after all these years I finally manage to own an actual CD copy of this album 3 weeks ago. Listening to the whole album today, this album is now one of my favourite, I love every song in the album. Anyway, back to the song for today, the direct English translation of the title is “when we can see through sadness”.

The lyrics of the song are the protagonist looking through her feeling after breaking up from a third person perspective. The lyrics said “it is not odd that that night it started to snow, so that it could stop the blood from her wound. That made her remembers the cruellest moment of her life. That night, he analysed his action in the past few months, all of a sudden he doesn’t want to continue their relationship. Coming back, the view from the train is now reversing. She forgot why she was in the city. The tears that she remembers for life is trapped in her eyes like the water in a lake. But sadly, no matter how much she cries, these tears would get her love one retune to her side. Who said that there was so much work to do? In the busy world, sadness is not allowed. The thing that she worried the most is that she forgets how she managed to fallen to sleep in the past. Don’t mention who she was waking up for. Then she started to not care about him. She even let him know about this. The thing that she remembers for life, at the end is just so dull; just like it would be fine to live without feeling. The saying that she still doesn’t understand is “when seeing through sadness”. In the future, she no longer care who she will spent the rest of her life with.” Hope you will like this song as much as I do.

The song for today is “下靶” by C AllStar. This song was requested by a fellow reader a while ago. It is a bit hard to translate the title of this song. In Chinese it means someone that is always taking the role of being inferior, generally acting thought as the situations require someone to play that role. The closest that I could think of is “Underdog”, but it doesn’t quite capture the full meaning.

The lyrics of the song are about love. The protagonist said perhaps he said too much and perhaps he need to kneel down to admit his wrong, please tell him where he got wrong. If you asked him, he prefers to make up for his wrong. If he tried and got wrong, he wouldn’t mind to get told off. Maybe his problem is that he thinks too much. What could he relay on to say jokes? If getting too excited would turn into hate; swear that you will destroy too much, putting out his lit cigarette; this movement taught him a lesson. Please put away your mouth as it tends to react too quickly. Even in normal conservation, they could start arguing. He is not worry that he will own her, but worry that he can’t hold himself back. Is it good to be bowing to her like normal? He felt that it is a shame to be a mute, so perhaps disappearing is better. He wanted to keep this sadness to end the relationship. He can’t stand to accept all the unreasonable arguing. He hold himself up, to be an underdog, perhaps this is good enough. From now on he hold his laughter, just let others to laugh. He wanted to calm himself down. He is not dare to give order as he got used to matching her movements. If he keep holding himself up, to be an underdog, would she be happy? Why they have to argue? Could she hold it back? Perhaps they could understand each other. But he doesn’t want to lie. It is sad that she doesn’t listen and doesn’t responds. Thinking about that hard working summer, he was not worry that he will own her, but worried that he can’t hold himself back. He holds himself up, to be an underdog. Is it good enough now that he accepted his fate? Is she thinking of him now? He felt that they are so far apart. He is being himself at low places so he doesn’t have much energy left. He now took all the bad consequences that he deserved, and no one is looking up to him. He tried to be himself, but there isn’t much he could do now, he can only get drunk and try to express all his feeling. Hope you will like the song.
