7th Apr 2013 (舊生會 – Hacken Lee)

The song that I chose for today is “舊生會” by Hacken Lee. The direct English translation of the title is “Reunion”.

The lyrics of the song are about love. It starts off telling us that the protagonist and his ex-girlfriend once went to the same school. They used to kiss in their secret hide out. He used skip classes just for her. Now they have an alumni reunion, and the two of them meet, everything seems to come back to his mind. He knows that the two of them would make a good match; they have everything going their way except fate. So no matter how much he wished her to become his girlfriend again, he will have to let her go, especially now that she already got a boyfriend. He remembers that when they were together back in school time, someone found out about their relationship and everyone just spread the word around. Back then they were not afraid of being told off by anyone. But now, as their love had long cessed, he automatically becomes one of her best friends. But he don’t want to be in this position, so in the reunion, he slowly move away and tried to avoid her. He said that if one day she married, there is no need to invite him, as he can’t bear to see that he is not the guy to give her the ring. Hope you will like the song.

6th Apr 2013 (我教你分手 – Eric Suen)

The song that I chose for today is “我教你分手” by Eric Suen. Eric was quite popular in the early 90’s but these days he doesn’t seem to produce albums on regular bases. This song was from a few years ago, it was the song that they sent to radio station for the promotion of the album. The direct English translation is “I will teach you how to break up”.

The lyrics of the song are not about the protagonist, but about his friend. It start with the protagonist’s friend (let call him Mr. A to make it easier to refer to him) saying that she doesn’t like Mr. A anymore, the protagonist understand and let him cry. Then Mr. A told him that recently she seems to love jewellery, and the protagonist understands that his friend just can’t afford it. He felt sorry for his friend, as his friend give so much to this girl and he got nothing in return. He feels that his friend is wasting Mr. A youth. He believes that the girl has already betrayed Mr. A, and if he is Mr. A he would have dumped her already. He reckoned no one in the world would be as stupid as his friend, giving her everything for nothing. He said even if his friend die, she wouldn’t care, in fact she might feel good about it as she probably feel lucky as Mr. A no longer border her.  So he said if he is Mr. A, he would just treat this as a game. He would remember all the bitterness and learn how to protect himself. Hope you will like the song.

5th Apr 2013 (心酸的情歌 – Eric Moo)

The song that I chose for today is “心酸的情歌” Eric Moo (巫啟賢). Eric was quite popular back in the 80’s and early 90’s. These days he seems to move out of the Cantonese market. This song is one of the more well know songs by Eric. The direct English translation of the title is “Sad love song”.

The lyrics of the song are about the protagonist is very sad that the girl he love didn’t love him in return. He said that he is now very sad and he is singing this song. In this song, he knows that there wouldn’t be a happy ending nor that she will fall in love with him. He still wishes that they could be together, knowing that he love her so deeply. But she didn’t seems to like him at all. All he want to do now is to release all his sadness by singing this song. Hope you will like the song.

4th Apr 2013 (雨夜的浪漫 – Alan Tam/ファンタジー – 布施明)

The song that I chose for today is “雨夜的浪漫” by Alan Tam. I personally love this song. This song came out in the 80’s and it was very popular, it is consider as one of Alan’s classic. This song is like many other songs in 80’s it is a Chinese cover version of a Japanese song. The original Japanese version is call “ファンタジー” sung by布施明. The direct English translation of the title is “Romance in the rain”.

The lyrics of the song are very straight forward. It starts off telling us that it was raining and the protagonist is accompanying his girlfriend to travel home. On the silence street, they started kissing. Every kiss makes his heart pump faster. He felt sweetness from her kisses and he seems to forget all the pain in the past. It seems that in this darkness and in this romance environment, there is only him and his girlfriend. It felt like it was a fantasy. He cries because of happiness. He enjoyed the rain so much and that he know he need her. The night is long and he feels that they can’t be pull apart. The both jump into an umbrella and watch the rain. Hope you will like the song. The original Japanese version is also linked for your comparison.

3rd Apr 2013 (幾分鐘的約會 – Danny Chan)

The song that I chose for today is “幾分鐘的約會” by Danny Chan. This song is very old, it was from around 1980 when Hong Kong first got it underground railway system. The direct English translation of the title is “A few minutes date”.

The lyrics of the song are very simple. The song is about the protagonist catch the train every day and he meets this girl. He knows that he had already fallen in love with her. The trip only lasted for a few minute, but he enjoyed it a lot. Every day they talked to each other, although their trip is short, but day by day they got to know each other well, he feels that she understand him well. One day, he was waiting for her, but she didn’t appear. It wasn’t a rainy nor a windy day, so he wonder why she suddenly disappeared. He waited for her for the next few days, yet she still didn’t show up. He felt that the god of love is making a joke on him, and this short date seems to be over. He felt unhappy, as he thinks that their story haven’t even reach the climax but already faced its end. Hope you will enjoy the song.

2nd Apr 2013 (Monica – Leslie Cheung/モニカ – Kikkawa Koji (吉川晃司))

The song that I chose for today is “Monica” by Leslie Cheung. Yesterday was Leslie’s 10th death anniversary. To memories him, I have chosen one of Leslie’s songs that I think it could partly represent Leslie. This song came out in 1984, it was a big hit back then, a very energetic song. Note that like many other songs in the 80’s, this one is also a Chinese cover version of a Japanese song. The original is call “モニカ” sung by Kikkawa Koji (吉川晃司).

The lyrics of the song are rather simple; it is about the protagonist thanks her ex-girlfriend for leaving him. It start off telling us that before they broke up, his ex-girlfriend gave him everything. But back then, he didn’t treasure it and look down at her. Now that she had left him, he felt guilt about it. He now realises that no one could replace her place in his heart and he started to see how bad as a person he was. It is too late now to turn back as she had already found her love one. So he thanks her for what she did, and thanks her for changing him as he now see the things differently. Now he can only keep his love to her in his heart. Hope you will like the song. I have also linked the original Japanese version below.

1st Apr 2013 (冇腳雀仔 – Eric Kwok and at17)

The song that I chose for today is “冇腳雀仔” by Eric Kwok and at17. I didn’t notice about this song until a few days ago when I accidently clicked on it. The melody is very simple (though the lyrics are complex). When I listen to it, it give me a sense of freshness and I feel quite relax. The direct English translation of the title is “Bird without legs”.

The lyrics of the song are about life. The lyrics are quite complex and I found it hard to do a line by line translation so I will just give a brief description of the meaning. The lyrics mentioned that there is a bird, it spent all it strength to fly forward to the most glamorous place on Earth. The bird just keeping looking to the future, thinking where to go next and didn’t seems to care about where it is now. The bird start to aged, and it realised that the world that it live in started to change. It tried to remember where it been to, but it got no memory of it and no proof of where it had gone before. Now, where does the bird wanted to go? It started to realise that it misses its childhood time, but there is no way it can go back now.

I found the lyrics are very strong. It basically tried to tell us that in our life, we just keep trying to move forward, chasing after our dreams. But in the process, we seems to forget about our surrounding, we don’t seems to enjoy the world that we are living in. So one day, when we stop, we might realise that we still haven’t reached our dreams, but at the same time, we have no memory of our past, we have never enjoyed our life. By then, we might want to go back in time to enjoy our life, but it is too late, as we can never go back. Hope you will enjoy the song.
