7th Jun 2013 (預言書 – Kenny Kwan)

The song that I chose for today is “預言書” Kenny Kwan. Kenny was part of a group called Boyz, I think this was a solo song from that time. Personally I love the song, but Kenny singing skill does put down the song quite a bit. Nevertheless, the melody and the lyrics are great. The direct English translation of the title is “Prophecy”.

The lyrics of the song are about growing up. The lyrics start off saying that the protagonist was still a kid, he used to hold his Mazinger figure and run around in the house (“Mazinger” is a Japanese robot animation.) At the age of seven, he prophecies that he will become a pilot and fly a fighter. But as he grow up, the economic didn’t take-off, he sadly let go of his dream. Mazinger is becoming history and it feels like a century had passed. The rocket that carries his childhood dreams exploded not long after take-off. Because for living he give up on his dream, so he worked hard to try to gain as much money as he could. The world is a game in adulthood; no one would care about the childhood prophecy. I will reserve a time machine for you, but you will guide you in your memories? Even if I let you chose again, would you aim so high again? I will leave you a camera to capture happiness and anger. There were many prophecies that you made in childhood, but the world changes too quickly. All Mazinger’s team mates have retired by today, follow up by the popularity of Neon Genesis Evangelion (another very popular Japanese robot animation), but now the protagonist is too old to follow. Following the flow of the world, he had been so naïve that he had fallen many times. All his team mates from the past have all moved on. He now seems to forget the address of his dream land, and it had disappeared from the city. Many boxes of comics are going to the trash bin. He now got used to disappointment and discouragement, perhaps having courage is a sin. He have now reached the age of adult, and there is no trace of his great prophecy. He will leave us the time machine, but in our memory Mazinger will only lie to us, so please don’t aim too high. He will leave us a camera, through the camera, we could record who had tried to chase their dreams and who pull back. There were many prophecies that we made about our lives, but how many of us could keep these promises as we aged. Hope you will enjoy the song.

6th Jun 2013 (流浪花 – David Lui/ローリング – Nakajima Miyuki 中島美雪)

The song that I chose for today is “流浪花” by David Lui. This is one of the most popular songs by David, and it is my personal favourite from David. I have completely forgotten about this song until yesterday I heard a section of it from the radio. The direct English translation of the title is “Roving flower”. This song is the Chinese cover version of Nakajima Miyuki’s (中島美雪) ローリング

The lyrics of the song are about love. The lyrics start off telling us that long time ago, the protagonist and his girlfriend often go to this coffee shop. The waiter that always served them said that they are a perfect match. The tea is still taste like in the old days. But now he is sitting by himself, and fallen into his memories. He wishes to fallen in love again, he hate that he keep thinking about her. ‘Please come back’, he said, ‘make my life worthwhile again’. He feels that as if the world doesn’t need him anymore if he can’t have her back. So he wishes that she could come back. The rain is pouring down, but they can’t wash away his love. The tea is getting cold, but he is still in his thought. That waiter asked him where is his girlfriend. He forced himself to smile. He was thinking to act, wishing to lie, but he doesn’t know how to say it out loud. So he just pretended that he didn’t hear it, and drink his cold tea to cover up his sadness. Hope you will like the song. I have also linked to the original Japanese version for comparison.

5th Jun 3013 (無心戀 – Jacky Cheung)

The song that I chose for today is “無心戀” by Jacky Cheung. This song is from one of my favourite album from Jacky call “過敏世界”. Many songs in this album were popular. Rarely these days to find so many popular songs pack in one album. The direct English translation of the title is “heartless love”.

The lyrics are about love. The protagonist said that he never would imagine their relationship would goes like this. He wanted to know why the more he gives the more pain he feels. Why the more he does, the harder it seems for the girl to make up her mind. He said if she wanted to separate, then perhaps she should voice out. In that case, it would at least be a relief for him. But she just seems to like to drag it on. He wonders why they can never return to the stage at the beginning when they love each other so much. He just can’t understand why the more he loves her the more burden he have to take. Hope you will like the song.

4th June 2013 (心淡 – Joey Yung)

The song that I chose for today is “心淡” by Joey Yung. The direct English translation of the title is “Disheartened”.

The lyrics of the song are about love. It begins with the protagonist telling us that she can’t understand why she was so sick that she can’t distinguish between bitterness and sweetness. Every day she keep holding on, and keep trying to contact him. She wonders does she need to live like this for the rest of her life. She said she is humble. She lost her self-respect all because she love him too much. She just never been able to learn to hate him, and because of that she can’t leave him and he is not worry that she will fly away. So she decided from this minute onward, she will use half a year time to slowly dishearten about him and slowly to walk away from him. Her heart will hurt each day. Over the hundred or so days, it should be enough for her to send her to hell and then bring her back alive. So if she decided to break up in Spring, then by Autumn, she should have got used to it. Hope you will like the song.

3rd Jun 2013 (卡通歌 – Justin Lo)

The song that I chose for today is “卡通歌” by Justin Lo. I personally quite like this song, as it uses stories from fairy-tale to describe real life. The direct English translation of the title is “Cartoon song”.

The lyrics of the song are about the love life of the protagonist. At the beginning, it said that from the age of 6, the protagonist that a princess is trap in a forest. Since then he wanted to save her and bring her away from the forest. He said that he doesn’t looks handsome, but in the fairy-tale world there is always luck, and a single kiss could change a frog. Then he realised that all girls wanted was happiness, they wouldn’t want glass slippers. The more girl that he hug, the more times he get hurt. He realised that being passionate to others is wrong. He seems not to be able to distinguish between princesses and witches, by the time he realised it, the beautiful horse coach was already on fire. He realised that his life couldn’t follow the fairy-tale. He said if he can’t fall in love with a queen, then he will fall in love with monster. There is still a castle, just that it is not as big and the wind might blow it away. Then he understood that all girl wants was to be happy, but he had always misinterpreted them. The more girl that he meet, the more times he get hurt. The more naïve he was, the bitterer it was.  So he said that if being naïve is not popular, then perhaps he shouldn’t exist in this world. Hope you will like the song.

2nd Jun 2013 (願我可以學會放低你 – Denise Ho)

The song that I chose for today is “願我可以學會放低你” by Denise Ho. I used to listen to this song very often as I love the melody. The direct English translation of the title is “Wish I can learn how to let you go”.

The lyrics of the song are about love. The protagonist said that if she go wile and do all the crazy things, in two days’ time she will get bored and return here. She felt that as if he had captured her soul. She can’t seems to be able to control herself, she had made too many mistake all because of him. She knows that if she goes back to him, she will lose her happiness. She wonders how good he really is, why it seems that she can’t find a better guy and forced her to go back to him. She wishes that she can learn how to let him go, and therefore let herself to find another partner. Looking to his face, she can see his beauty, while she wanted to leave, but she feet can’t seems to move. She wishes that she could be so crude to kick him away, but she can’t resist his open arms. She knows that she can leave him, she just seems to like to stick with him. She felt that she value him even more than herself, so she doesn’t know how to hurt him. So the only thing that she can do is to give him her heart. Hope you will enjoy the song.

1st Jun 2013 (顧家 – I Love U Boyz)

The song that I chose for today is “顧家” by I Love U Boyz. I Love U Boyz make up of two radio host (Donald Tong and Jim Yan), they usually sing less serious and funny songs. Their name somewhat plays on the music group Boyz, which had two members. I remember when I first listen to them, they used to say their name as ‘I Love U’ Boyz (so make it sounds like a supporting slogan for Boyz). Although Boyz have long disappeared, but I Love U Boyz is still around. These days they referred to themselves by the shorten form “ILUB” or in Chinese “艾粒” (which pronounced as ‘I Love’). The direct English translation of the song title is “take care of the family”.

The lyrics of the song is about family relationship, it describe more or less a typical family in Hong Kong in the 70’s. It start off with a monologue saying “Son, how are you. In the last few decades I have been working on a ship away from home. I really wanted to be with you all the time, but…”. Then it say that the son open up an photo album and he remember his childhood time. He remembered about the drama that he used to watch. When his mum return home from work, they will just mixed some preserved soy bean cake with an egg as dinner (that’s what poorer people tends to eat back in those days). He said he was never worried about the difficult that he will face, and he work so hard. One day the economic started to fall, but he still remember how everyone used to love Hong Kong so much. Monologue again “I have bought you a yo-yo from America. Transformers, the cartoon that you used to love so much when you were a kid, is on air in the US. Ar, have the soccer match in Captain Tsubasa finished yet?” (Note ‘Captain Tsubasa’ was a very popular Japanese cartoon in Hong Kong.). Now the protagonist’s sister went overseas for further study. He remembers he went to the airport to say goodbye to his friends. Even when his wages have been reduced, but he was still happy. Now, no one can replace you as the person that I have dinner with. Monologue again “Son, I wanted to tell you that the moon cake tin under my bed contained a watch that I wanted to pass it on to you. Although the Rolex is fake, but I hope that you will put this watch on you wrist and remember to treasure time and treasure the people around you. Ar, how long have it been since we saw each other?”

I found the lyrics very touching. It was very typical for family back then to be separated. Very often, the male will work on ship (as Hong Kong is a main port) and they will be separated from their family for a long time in exchange for more cash to support their family. Hope you will like the song.
