31st May 2013 (剪愛 – A-Mei)

The song that I chose for today is “剪愛” by A-Mei. A-Mei is a very popular singer in Taiwan. I am not a fan of hers so I never pay much attention to her, but heard this song yesterday and I love it so much. This song, is rather old, I think it came out in her first ever album in 1996. The direct English translation of the title is “Cut love”.

The lyrics of the song are about the protagonist just broke up with her boyfriend and she now got a broken heart. It begins by telling us that her boyfriend had changed his heart and so he didn’t kept his promises to her. She said if their relationship is broke off, then there is no point to be sad about it. But she kept her eyes closed and listened to his excuses; she was not dared to look at his expression. There are full of stars in the sky, and her tears just keep dropping. She tried not to talk about it and tried to reflect on the whole incident, at the end she manage to escape love. So she cut ‘love’ into pieces and let it follow the wind into the sea. She said that there are many things in the world that she will not understand until tears started to drop. As naive as she is, she thought that she can hold on and look forward to the future, but no one can assure that her love will be free from dirt. She cut ‘love’ into pieces again and let it flow with the wind. She realised that the deeper she is hurt, the more she understand that she have to let go. She said that it’s her fault to become too relay on him, and from that point, she had turned love to hurt. She realised that she can’t cut away their old happy memories. Hope you will enjoy the song.

30th May 2013 (越唱越強 – Joey Yung)

The song that I chose for today is “越唱越強” by Joey Yung. I quite like the powerful melody of this song. The direct English translation of the title is “More I sing, stronger I get”.

The lyrics of the song are about gaining confident in ourselves through singing. At the beginning, the protagonist said that people used to laugh at her because they think she doesn’t have the courage to kill a mosquito and that she is not treacherous enough to face the world. But she said that because she was positive and naive, she was lucky enough to get over all the difficulties and now praise by others. She said she now needs to have courage to give it her best shoot, so that she can reach the sky. To success, she needs to forget about the difficult that might come along the way. She believes that as long as she doesn’t give up, and not worry about the losses on the way, with her ideas, she will achieve high. So she will get stronger as she sing, she will not think about the difficulties. She will spend all her strength in her voice. She believes that the more she sings, she will found a direction one day. She had made up her mind that she will no longer care about her image, she will just do what she want, which is to keep singing, and through which she gain more confident. She will believe in her thought and ignore the negative thought from others, put all her strength to singing to reach the highest point. Hope you will like the song.

29th May 2013 (你我她 – Vincy Chan)

The song that I chose for today is “你我她” by Vincy Chan. From memory this is one of her earlier song, one from her first album. The direct English translation of the title is “You me her”.

The lyrics of the song are about love. The protagonist said that she went into a metro, and saw three obsessed person. She believes that there are romances, so she wanted to date a boy and have dinner with him. She is now on a street and saw three disappointed person. She wanted to go onto shops to get rid of the cold feeling. She feel that in this city there are no rooms for fairy tale. Beauty is in our heart, but who will understand our inner beauty. We all live in the same city, but we are all worry. Have you not fallen in love with someone? Trusted love? But at the end, the streets are full of sadness. Happiness is in our heart, but who will treasure it. How many of us had failed? Are there so many to fill up the city? And now we all go home and who is left crying? We had once cried so badly that our tears could fill up the sea, but these tears will evaporate under the sun. Everywhere in the city is busy, and she is also working hard to try to forget. She wishes that he could let it go as well.

To be honest, I found the lyrics hard to translate as it doesn’t quite form a complete story. But I think what it trying to say is that there is this girl, who just broke up with her boyfriend. She is walking around the city and saw many couples are breaking up. She wondered what happened to them, why they end up like her. Then she thought what would they do now, cry on the street? She believe that all of them would just end up going home straight away, none will cry on the street like she did. Hope you like the song.

28th May 2013 (野孩子 – Miriam Yeung)

The song that I chose for today is “野孩子” by Miriam Yeung. This song was from one of my all-time favourite album “Miriam”, to me it is the best Miriam’s album. Many of the songs in the album were popular. From memory this was the album that pushes Miriam to become one of the top singers in Hong Kong. The direct English translation of the title is “Wild child”.

The lyrics of the song are about love. The song describe a girl who most people see her as wild, the type that do that do the thing she wanted and not listen to others. In reality, she is just acting that way. She wanted people to see her that way. She knew that fallen in love with a boy is normal, but if she is just one of the ordinary girl, her boyfriend would not remember her if they break up one day. So she acts to be hard to control and wild, so that her boyfriend would need to spent lot of time thinking how to control her. Many people around her said that she don’t know how to deal with boys. Being hard to control had make her a bad name as well. They laugh at her, saying that she will never found her true love. She now broke up with her boyfriend. She ask if she have been truthful to him, would she be his only girlfriend. But it’s too late now, they haven’t even kissed and they have already broken up. Although walking away from this relationship might look a bit bad, but it has to be this way, otherwise he will not remember her in the future.

I really like this song. Although by reading the lyrics, it feels the girl is a bit strong and tough, but with the melody, you can feel that the girl is actually very soft. She is just trying to act tough to protect herself. Hope you will like the song.

27th May 2013 (月球上的人 – Eason Chan)

The song that I chose for today is “月球上的人” by Eason Chan. This is one of my favourite songs. It was a theme song for a radio drama. When I first heard it, it was so touching as it matches so well with the radio drama story. The direct English translation of the title is “The person on the moon”.

The lyrics of the song are about life. At the start of the song, it said that we don’t need happiness as we are already dead. If we have tears, it is just a physiological secretion. Even if we got so much tears that it is enough to wet the land, flowers would not fly, it will just stay with you in the grave. If we got the chance to see each other again, it might have already been a century. My memories try to lie to me that loses is still beautiful. If there is a limit on time for yearning, then perhaps I would have forget everything by tomorrow.  Now we meet again in the future, we both regret that we didn’t know how to love each other. All I wish is that I will never remember I am in the current time. Looking from the moon, it is hard to distinguish love. Books will never tell me who I love the most. The space-time is too big, it exceeded my emotion. I understood my life after I have fallen in love. If I can only hold onto your monument, then at least I would think that I have once been with you. Goodbye, just like the old days I can’t be in love with you. But our history will change the future of our next generation.

The lyrics might seem a bit confusing, but it is related to the radio drama. In that section of the radio drama, it talked about an astronaut was sitting on a rocket. The rocket was about to launch and he was about to travel to the moon. He will be the first person to land on the moon from Hong Kong. However, the rocket exploded when it launches and he was killed in the process. The song basically tells us that although he passed away, but his soul travelled to the moon. He is now all by himself, separated from his family, the people that he loves. He felt that he didn’t love his wife and kids as much as he should, but it is too late now. He wishes that they could meet again, but perhaps when they meet again it will be the next century (probably referring to reincarnation). Hope you will like the song.

26th May 2013 (澤田研二 – George Lam/Itsumi – Kenji Sawada (澤田研二))

The song that I chose for today is “澤田研二” by George Lam. I never heard of this song before today. I was searching in iTunes and I bump into this song. What catches my eyes is the name of the song. The direct English translation of the title is “Kenji Sawada”. The name of the song is actually a name of a Japanese singer. At first I thought the song name was accidently switched with the artist name, but when I saw it was George Lam, I realised that the name must be correct. The funny thing about this song is that, this is a Chinese cover of Kenji Sawada’s “Itsumi”.

The lyrics of the song are quite out of the ordinary. The lyrics are about the feeling of the protagonist when he listens to Kenji Sawada’s songs. It starts off saying that Kenji is like water, and his voice touched the protagonist. He feels warm and connected. Kenji is like fire and warms him up. Kenji voice is so catching that it is hard to resist. Kenji Sawada, it feels like you had caught my soul. The emotion from your song is very straight forward that he doesn’t need to guess. So Kenji Sawada, please keep singing and lighten my life.

In the middle of the song, George added a monologue. He said that in 1981, it was the first time he heard Kenji Sawada singing. That night he heard many Kenji’s songs. Although he didn’t understand all of the songs, but Kenji’s voice is imprinted in his head.

Hope you will like the song. I have also linked to Kenji Sawada’s Itsumi just for comparison.

25th May 2013 (負親 – Terence Chui/說不出的 – Rico Long)

The song that I chose for today is “負親” by Terence Chui. This song is very new. I only hear this song yesterday and I love it. This song uses the same melody as “說不出的” by Rico Long but with different lyrics. Both Terence and Rico are originated from Macau. I think the two of them are good friends. Rico’s version is good as well, but I prefer Terence’s version. My tears almost dropped when I listen to this song. It is hard to get a translation on the title, as it plays with words. The pronunciation of the title is the same as “父親” meaning father. But as can be seen the first word is different, this word “” means owe in this context. So the title indicated that it is a song about father and that the protagonist of the song feel that he owe his father something. By the way, the lyrics were especially written for Terence to describe his relationship with his father who had passed away last year.

The lyrics of the song are about the relationship between father and son. It starts with the protagonist telling us that he is thinking of the time when he first meets his dad. He was scare of his fathers’ pointy beard. He cried and moves backward, but his father was speaking to his mother tenderly that he is very naughty. When he was six, he was still scare of his father. Perhaps it was his father’s straight faces that tell him not to talk to his dad. From then on, even saying goodnight to his dad he need to think about it for a long time. He feel that his relationship with his dad is like a couple who just breakup. Times fly, now when they have dinner together, they don’t talk to each other. He feels that they are worse than two strangers. Ten years later, one night, he saw that his dad needs to relay on a machine to breath. He hold his father’s slightly warm hand and told him that please don’t leave. He said goodnight to his dad, and until now, he realised that he couldn’t think of anything happy between him and his father. His tears start to drop, and he feels that this will be the last time that they see each other. Time could not return to the beginning, he realised that he missed so much opportunity to create good memories. Now it is too late to make any promises, he can only keep these words to himself. His guilt of not being nice to his dad will never fade away. The hug that he put away, the letters that he didn’t post, now at the funeral, they are completely useless. Next to his dad’s tombstone, even if he tries to tell his dad about all the little things that happened today, his dad will not respond. Perhaps when he was a kid, if he had the courage to say “I love you”, then perhaps, the two of them would have been a lot closer.

This song is very touching, even reading the lyrics make me cry. I guess this a very typical story amount Chinese (or even Asian) community. As a Chinese, we tend not to say “I love you” to our parents. We assume that they know, they understand, we feel embarrassed to show these feeling, but sometime, this lead to misunderstanding. By the time we realised it, it might have been too late. So perhaps we should act before it is too late. Hope you will like the song. I also linked to Rico’s “說不出的”, it is also about the relationship between father and son, but I like Terence’s version much more.

24th May 2013 (明星 – Deanie Yip)

The song that I chose for today is “明星” by Deanie Yip. This is a very famous song and it is a classic from Deanie. While many have sung this song, Deanie’s version is one of the more popular version. The direct English translation of the title is “Stars”.

The lyrics of the song are about memories. The protagonist wishes that the person she loves will remember her when he looks at the stars. She wonders would he remember her face and remember she once had smile more often than the stars in the sky. She wonders if he remembers about their past, what would he do, would he just let it go and remember that she had once shined in his heart. She said she is like a star in the sky. She had once loved him, and once let her light to ease his pain. She wishes that when he lookup to the sky, he will think of her and when he see the universe shine, she wishes that he would remember her. Hope you will like the song.

23rd May 2013 (我好愛你 – Ivana Wong)

The song that I chose for today is “我好愛你” by Ivana Wong. To be honest, I never really notice that Ivana got this song. Though I have heard it many time in radio drama. When I first listen to it, I didn’t like it too much as I found the tempo is too slow. Perhaps it was the radio dramas, now when I listen to it, it seems to paint a picture in my head. The direct English translation of the title is “I love you so”.

The lyrics of the song are about love. At the start, the protagonist said that she is happy because she meets him, she is sad because their story is too beautiful. Perhaps getting to know each other is already lucky, and fallen in love have created a legend. She is happy because she look far in the future, but sad because they make too many promises. The snows are white and she is trying to hold up her tears. She loves him so and need him so much. She now got him, but worry that she will lose him. They hugged each other and they had loved each other so deeply, so she tries not to think too much. She said he is too beautiful, and she loves him so deeply. Lack of oxygen had made her lost control of herself. If one day he decided to dump her, waking up from the perfect dream wouldn’t be too bad, but she wishes that she could delay the pain. She loves him so. She said she will remember for live how to say “I love you” to him to melt his heart. She loves him so, and he love her so. Hope you will enjoy the song.

22nd May 2013 (數三聲 (給神經緊張的你) – Chet Lam)

The song that I chose for today is “數三聲 (給神經緊張的你)” by Chet Lam. The direct English translation of the title is “Count to three (to the nervous you)”. I am so nervous and feel so much pressure today, my deadline for my thesis is approaching in around two months’ time, but yet I still got so much to do, so much to complete is such a short time. It feels likes as if the whole world is sitting on me, making me can’t breathe. So I search for a song that I hope can help me to relax a bit as I know feeling pressurised is not going to make it any better and I found this song.

The lyrics of the song tell us to relax from our pressure. To be honest, it feels a bit touching as it makes me feel that I am not alone. The lyrics start off saying that losing our memory, losing our voice, losing our love on and worry that we will lose our happiness. Every of these problems have their own characteristic and they make us feel tired. Sometime, we dreamed too much, wishes we have this and that and worried that we still haven’t found out love one. Now count to three, take a deep breath and they will be all gone. We might be worry about aging, worry about pain, worry about being bored to dead. Sometime we force ourselves to tolerate, force ourselves to move forward, force ourselves to get more results and at the end we force ourselves to death. Count to three and we are still alive, so there is no need to get angry. Perhaps there is no sunshine on our path, can’t hide from the bad weather and no one will understand how tired you are. But being worry and getting angry would age you quicker. Impatient, getting down and heart broken and the bad luck arrived, but remember if we are too hungry our brain would not function well. Nervous, depress and worry too much making you about to fall. Just count to three and laugh, you wouldn’t lose a single cell. The world might continue to get worse and you might continue to suffer. But you will have the strength to count to three and laugh when you have learnt how to laugh.

Although I am still nervous and worry after listing to the song, but it makes me feel a bit better. At least I now feel I got the courage to keep going. I guess we felt worry because we think that what we are about to face it something that we can’t handle or something that will rarely happen in our life. But really, things like this always happened in our life, and as a human, we really have no choice but to face the problem. We might think that we can try to avoid a problem by running away, but by taking a different route, we will eventually face a similar problem. We can’t keep running away for the rest of our lives, so perhaps we should take out some courage and face the problem once and for all. Then at least we know will have one less problem to worry about. Hope you will enjoy the song.

21st May 2013 (出賣 – Joey Yung)

The song that I chose for today is “出賣” by Joey Yung. I remember this song was very popular when it first came out. The direct English translation of the title is “Betrayal”.

The lyrics of the song is about the protagonist got betrayed by her closest friend. The song starts off telling us that the protagonist can’t believe that she is betrayed by her best friend (let call her May to make it easier to tell the story). May told the protagonist that she had warned the protagonist that the protagonist boyfriend wanted to dump her. May also told her that he love May more than her. The protagonist said that no matter how bad her boyfriend was, she can still face it, but now being betrayed by her best mate, it feels like she is being buried alive. She said even if she wanted revenge, she still wanted them to feel that they owe her. She feels angry as she feels that she had lost her love and friendship at the same time. She said perhaps that she is taking it ok, and even asked to be their bridesmaid when they get married. She said that her friend actually didn’t know her too well, she is the kind of person that the deeper she get hurt, the better person she tried to be. So she will do nothing and even play nice, so that the two of them will feel guilty. She said that trying to revenge is too much effort, so she will just stand on the side and watch them break apart as she knows that they will not last. Hope you will enjoy the song.

20th May 2013 (戀上外星人 – Chilam Cheung)

The song that I chose for today is “戀上外星人” by Chilam Cheung. Chilam hardly sing these days, this song is from two years ago. I enjoy the melody of the song. The direct English translation of the title is “Fallen in love with an alien”.

The lyrics of the song are about love. The lyrics start off telling us that the protagonist think that he is no body. But he believe that his girlfriend somehow believe he got a lot of potential and helped him. He is grateful that she loves him even at the time when he doesn’t worth wile to be loved. So he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. If he cans chose, he wanted to be with her again in his next life. Hope you will like the song.

19th May 2013 (世界之最 – Leon Lai)

The song that I chose for today is “世界之最” by Leon Lai. This is not the same song as Sammi Cheng’s ”世界之最[我願意]” that I talked about before. I remember I used to listen to this song a lot when I was a kid. I had no idea what’s the lyrics trying to say, but the melody really catches my ears. From memory, this song is a song for a jeans advertisement. The direct English translation of the title is “Best of the world”.

In a way this song is about love, but more in the sense of enjoying life. The lyrics are a bit complex, I am not 100% sure what it is trying to say, but I have tried my best to translate the lyrics (or at least my understanding of the lyrics.) The lyrics start off telling us that we are free to do anything that we wanted to do, we can chose who to hang out with or who we wanted to kiss. We can have fun and enjoy what we wanted to do, so every day is like a holiday. We can chose the best of the world, and on the way there we will both see different beauty. Take it ease, relax, add a bit of love and follow your heart. It would be more enjoyable if you open your heart to the world and open up your options to choose your perfect love. I can see that you have lots of dreams that you wanted to achieve. Me and you can get along in every situation. So if we take things casually, every second that we spent together is a happy holiday. Hope you will like the song.

18th May 2013 (給朋友 – Jacky Cheung)

The song that I chose for today is “給朋友” by Jacky Cheung. This is a song from 2004. I remember I used to listen to this song a lot when I travel to uni every day. It is a song dedicated to his friends who passed away. This song is so touching, I remember when the first time I listen to it I almost cry. The lyrics aren’t anything special, but from the way Jacky sing, you can deeply feel his emotion. The direct English translation of the title is “To friends”.

The song starts off with Jacky’s monologue: “It’s December 2003, and from friends I know that you had passed away. I felt hurt, and I didn’t know how to express this feeling on my face. After work that day, when I was driving home alone, I felt the weather is getting cooler. Ar, it’s already winter.” In to the lyrics, it takes us into the soul of a person that just passed away. The soul felt as if she just woke up from sleep, and she felt very relax. She wishes that people around her to stop crying and stop being sad. The wind starts to blow, she wishes her friends will take care of themselves. If her friends understand her, they would be able to overcome their sadness .She felt that she is now living in a timeless space, she can travel miles in a second and she feel that she can finally take some rest. Her soul is still flying, looking for a green land. She will stay for a while and then will start her new journey. She knows that her friends will wish her well even when she is far far away. Jacky monologue: “On the way home, I didn’t see any one nor car. I felt lonely. I turned on the radio and it is still reporting that you had passed away. I looked out to the sky and it is dark, very dark.” The lyrics repeat, telling us that the soul wanted to stay for a little while before starting her new journey. Although she love her live, but she got to move on. Jacky’s monologue: “The journey back home felt extra-long today. I have finally reached home now, what about you…”. Back to the lyrics, the soul wishes her friend to take care of themselves and hope that they will one day overcome their sadness. She felt that she can finally take some rest.

The lyrics are very long and I hope it will help you to better understand the story behind the song. I really like this song as I found it very touching. Hope you will enjoy it as well.
