31st Mar 2013 (A.I.N.Y. (愛你) – G.E.M.)

The song that I chose for today is “A.I.N.Y. (愛你)” by G.E.M. This is one of G.E.M.’s representative songs. I personally think that this song is quite hard to sing, but G.E.M. handle it quite well. The direct English translation of the title is “A.I.N.Y. (Love You)”. The “A.I.N.Y.” is actually the shorten of the pronunciation of “Love You” in mandarin pronounced as “Ai Ni”.

The lyrics of the song are about getting dump. The protagonist said that ever since they broke up, she found that every night seems to be silent. She can hear the soft noise made by her clock. His tender voice used to come through her phone, but now all it left is emptiness and an emotionless reply. She said she once gave him her heart, but he didn’t treasure it. She begged him to love her back by telling him how much she love him, but it didn’t work. His arms were once a place that gives her comfort, but how she wonders who is leaning on his chest. Her last memory of him was that he was walking away from her and she breaks down and started crying. She cry every time she thing about this, but she still love him. She hate herself of being so stupid and can’t controlling her emotion. Hope you will like the song.

30th Mar 2013 (寂寞夜晚 – Hacken Lee/Le Mal De Toi – François Feldman)

The song that I chose for today is “寂寞夜晚” by Hacken Lee. This song is a cover version of a French song “Le Mal De Toi” by François Feldman. Personally I like Hacken’s version better, probably because I understand the lyrics and I heard this version first. But I do think that Hacken’s voice seems to bring out more of the song. Anyways, the direct English translation of the title is “Lonely night”. I have talked about a song with the same name by Leslie Cheung and covered by Eason Chan, but this song that that by Leslie are two different songs, they just happened to share the same name.

The lyrics of the song are about a broken heart. The song starts off with the protagonist telling us that it is a lonely night and as usual it is quite. Looking at the celling, he feels that he is saying goodbye to the romance that he had. Now he is starting to get used to his arm feeling empty (as in his girlfriend no longer with him, so he can’t hold her anymore) and the past is pasted he knows that it wouldn’t come back. Back then she said she will be with him always and that they will love each other until they die, but now he is left alone. He felt so warm in those days, but now it is so cold. He is slowly getting used to this lonely atmosphere.  I have linked to both Hacken’s cover version and the original. Hope you will like the song.

29th Mar 2013 (一首獨唱的歌 – Shirley Kwan)

The song that I chose for today is “一首獨唱的歌” by Shirley Kwan. This is surely one of Shirley’s classic. I am not Shirley’s fans, but I remember I love this song when I was a kid. Back then Shirley was fairly popular as well, but as times goes, her songs were further and further away from pop, which I think was the reason why she seems to disappear in the last few years. I think it was last year she produced a single, which was a cover of Eason’s “陀飛輪”. Personally I don’t like her cover version as it feel so different, but it did make some noise in the market. The direct English translation of the title is “A solo song”.

The lyrics of this song are about the protagonist think of her past. She said in a foggy night, she unintentionally walks past a street that they (she and her ex-boyfriend) used to hang out together. Walking along their footstep, she thought of their past and memorised how said she was. She wishes that it was just a dream so when she wakes up it would be all gone. She remembers back then, she was singing their love song, but he didn’t sing along. She knew that their fate have long gone and her crazy dream about their future have also been broken, all she see was that he left her was she was at sleep. She said that when human are in love, we can’t distinguish what is wrong. Perhaps they know that their relationship would lead to a dead end from the beginning, but they still decided to give it the spark of love. Love is crazy and it shouldn’t be treated as a toy, but now it is too late to understand all these. She remembers that day, he was crying so badly. As for her, she felt sad, but wasn’t hurt as deep. She wishes that he could forgive her and look at her again. She feels that she is the only one left on the bench sitting by herself. Hope you will like the song.

28th Mar 2013 (准我再一次 – Alex To)

The song that I chose for today is “准我再一次” by Alex To. Alex was very popular in the late 80’s and 90’s in Hong Kong. These days he is more active in China and Taiwan. I really don’t remember many of his songs, but this one is one of those that I got some memory of it. The direct English translation of the title is “Let me do it again”.

The lyrics of the song are about love. It starts off telling us that the protagonist asked to be forgiven to leave while they are still in love. He knows that neither of them wanted to say goodbye as neither of them wanted to be blamed. But he understands that their love has come to a dead end, and he is with a broken heart.  Love could not be understood nor predicted. He said if in the future, her special one makes her feel unhappy, just remember that he will always be there for her.

The song is quite straight forward, it basically talk about a guy leaving his girlfriend when he still loves her because he knows that she got another boyfriend but don’t want to make the decision. So he decided to leave, but wishes that if one day they broke up, she will come back to him. Hope you will like the song.

27th Mar 2013 (愛的習慣 – Justin Lo)

The song that I chose for today is “愛的習慣” by Justin Lo. This is one of the newer songs from Justin but it was still made from around 2-3 years ago. Justin these days are very inactive. He has moved to China as he was sick of Hong Kong’s paparazzi. I think it is rather sad to lose an artist like that, son hopefully he will become active in the Hong Kong market again soon. The direct English translation of the title is “Habit of love”.

The lyrics of the song are about love. In this song the protagonist question how it would be like if he knows that he will break up with his girlfriend before they started. At the beginning, the protagonist said that his girlfriend asked him to forget their relationship, perhaps just treat her as if she is one of his friends. But he said that even if he manage to treat her as a friend from the beginning, they would still end up in the same position as he would fantasize how it would be like to breakup with her. Even though they end up like this, but he just can’t forget or let go of the happy time that they had together.   He said even if he know that if he know beforehand that she would be the person that make him very happy and very sad, he wouldn’t try to avoid the breakup by not even starting the relationship because no one will know the future and he would still tried to be with her. Hope you will like the song.

26th Mar 2013 (井 – Hins Cheung)

The song that I chose for today is “” by Hins Cheung. Hins is one the singers that I like these days, so a certain degree, you can view him as the male version of Ivan Wong (beside the two of them are good friends as well). This song came out in later 2011 or early 2012. The direct English translation of the title is “Well” (as in the place that people collect water).

The lyrics of the song are about dead. The protagonist starts off saying that it is getting cooler, wetter and darker. Getting further, weaker and lighter, he is willing to scarify his life for love but she didn’t care. When he decided to hold his breath, he feels as if he could fly, floating into the sky. Now he returns to the ground and found himself dead. He now thought why his love relationship ends like this. He said, it doesn’t have to end like this, if he got the courage to end his life, he must have the courage to get back up. So please don’t think that committing suicide would make you into a legend.

The message of this song is quite deep. What it is trying to say is that don’t kill yourself because your love one leave you. If you got the courage to end your life like this, you much have the courage to recover. Hope you will like the song.

25th Mar 2013 (出生入死 – Denise Ho & 鬼 – Denise Ho)

The song that I chose for today is “出生入死” by Denise Ho. This song is one of my favourite by Denise. It is also a song from the first Denise’s album that I bought. These days, Denise’s singing style is so different, I guess songs like this will never be included in her album again. I found the title is a bit hard to translate into English, so I checked on Google translate (I found most of the time, the Google translate are not too accurate), it suggested “Go through fire and water”. The title in Chinese is a phase that usually describes a few people who have been through a lot together.

Some said that the lyrics are about the end of life. While I think it is partly about that, but I believe it also try to describe the end of a relationship. I think what it is describing is that the protagonist was dumped by her boyfriend, but she still hasn’t accepted this fact. But as the songs goes, she realised that even though she is not happy with this outcome, she still have to accept it. If you are viewing this song from the life perspective, it could be interpreted as the protagonist had come to the end of her life. There are many things that she don’t wanted to let go, but now that it comes to an end, no matter how hard she tried, she has to say good bye to these things.

When the first time I listen to this song, I thought my stereo system was broken, because after the song was finish, the disk still spin. It was after like 10-15 minutes later I realised that there was a hidden track. The hidden track called “” (“Ghost”). This is why people say that “出生入死” is about the end of life, because after a person passed away, they turn into ghost. I love this hidden track as well, but back in the CD era, it was very annoying because I have to fast forward the track to the start of the song, and most of the time I missed it. It was the main reason that keeps me away from listening to it frequently. Of cause, these days, it is just a matter of a few clicks, or if I can be border, I would separate the tracks. I guess this is the benefit of digital age. Anyway hope you will like the song. Since I found ” on youTube, so I have linked to it as well.

24th Mar 2013 (每一句說話 - Taichi)

The song that I chose for today is “每一句說話” by Taichi. I am not a fans of Taichi, but this is a song that I really like. This song is a classic and is it one of the more popular songs by Taichi. The direct English translation of the title is “Every single line that you said”.

The lyrics of the song are about love. The protagonist said that he once has face many difficulties and no one care about him. But one day she passes by and comforted him and he thought he understood why she comfort him (he thought she love him). But one day, she seems to have forgotten all about their love. He doesn’t understand why, but he hopes that she could still remember they once kissed in the car and he will love her until he die. If there is no fate between them, there is no way they could be together. So the protagonist feels that loving her forever is perhaps a debt that he owns her. During the lonely night, he remembered every words that she said, and he misses her. He sometime wished that she had never come to comfort him in the beginning, so that he don’t have to be like this, but once he thought about the good time that they have together, he realised that he love her so deeply that he will keep loving her until he die. Hope you will enjoy the song. The video that I linked below also show the English translation of the lyrics. But the translation seems a bit too complex and it translates line by line, so I feel that disturbed the flow of the story. But anyways, it provides an alternative to what I translate here, and might help you to better understand the song.

23rd Mar 2013 (倒轉地球 – Andy Lau)

The song that I chose for today is “倒轉地球” by Andy Lau. Personally I don’t like Andy too much, but he is a very successful artist, not only that he is well recognised in his singing career, but also in his acting career. This song is very old, I think it is a classic of Andy as many people remember this song. The direct English translation of the title is “Let's turn Earth around”.

The lyrics of this song are about being happy and forget all our trouble. The song start off saying let turn the Earth around, let go of our worries and all we wanted now is freedom. It then go on and say that stop worrying, let play hard by having a party, we will call over all of our friends and say good bye to all the things that trouble us. It is a very positive song, hope you will enjoy it.

倒轉地球 – Andy Lau

22nd Mar 2013 (一生何求 – Danny Chan)

The song that I chose for today is “一生何求” by Danny Chan. I love this song when I was a kid. It was a theme song of a TV drama and I guess that’s why it imprinted in my head. I can’t remember what’s the drama was about, but I remember who star in it, because at one point I thought this song was sung by the actor rather than Danny. The direct English translation of the title is “what do you wish for in your life” (is a bit hard to translate, but this is the closest that I can translate it).

The lyrics of the song are about a person reviewing his life. The lyrics is a bit hard to translate as it is rather abstract, hope you will understand my translation. He said that time had passed by, there were thing that he had in his hand but now it’s gone, but the thing that he never though he would get is with him. So he wonders where he has achieved what he wanted, and he said that it is hard to judge. So what are we chasing after in our life, we always make decision between giving up or getting it in our hand. We spent our life chasing after it, but before we can touch it, it has already run away. So what are we looking for in our life, we are always lost and can’t see through our purpose and we just never thought that what we lost is all that we got.

The lyrics are very abstract, but what it is trying to say is that in our life we might have many goals. While we try to achieve these goals, some we might achieve it, some might not. We might have success before, but then we lost it. But losing what we got might get us something that we never thought of. So in our life how can we judge whether we are successful or not as environment and perspective changes all the time. Hope you will like the song.

21st Mar 2013 (直覺 – Miriam Yeung)

The song that I chose for today is “直覺” by Miriam Yeung. This is a one of the earlier songs from Miriam. Miriam’s style had change over the years. From the beginning when she was under Capital Artists, her songs sound more indie, they are more claim. Her style changes closer to pop when she signs up with Gold Label (back then it was owned by EMI, but now it is a completely separate company). Her music style changes again when she signup with AMusic. Personally I like her best when she was with Capital Artists and Gold Label (she is now backed with Capital Artists, but she still sing with the AMusic style). Back to the song, the direct English translation of the title is “Intuition”.

The lyrics of the song are about love. The lyrics start with the protagonist asking what is happiness and forever lasting love. She spent lot of time before wondering the answer about these questions. She always looks for reward and she never found to have enough fame. As she ages, she finally understood there are no absolutely correct choices in life and things seems to repeat in life. There is no rules that said he need to replace the old with the new. In the daytime she work hard, and in the night time she play hard, but she feel empty. The most enjoyable part of her day is to walk by herself after a crazy night playing. She realised that success and failure is all depends on how you see it. She told us that she never though her boyfriend would be the one that walk with her from the past to the future. Perhaps it was what she did that get her to where she is today. So now when she work hard, she will reserve sometime for her boyfriend. She now know that he will be looking after her when she is lost in her life. Hope you will enjoy the song

20th Mar 2013 (在我生命裡 – Roman Tam)

The song that I chose for today is “在我生命裡” by Roman Tam. This song is one of Roman’s classic. The direct English translation of the title is “In my life”.

The lyrics of the song are very simile, it is basically about expressing his life that is full of music. At the start, Roman say that in his live, he loves to sing, he wanted his voice to spread around the world. In his life there are full of problems, but these problems helped him to come up with many dreams and found the direction in his life. Following the melody he spread his music around the world. Both happiness and sadness will turn into song. Hope you will like the song.

19th Mar 2013 (喜歡戀愛 – Candy Lo)

The song that I chose for today is “喜歡戀愛” by Candy Lo. I personally quite like this song. From memory, this song came out in around 2001. I love this this song the first time I hear it and I remember I search high and low to find out about its name. The direct English translation of the title is “love falling in love”.

The lyrics of the song are about love of cause. The protagonist at the start was facing her boyfriend. Her boyfriend wanted to break up with her, but he doesn’t know how to say it to her as he is worry that she can’t accept it. But the protagonist just wishes that he could light up a cigarette and say that he is sorry, that way he could still maintain his rough and raw image. Realising about her thought, she thinks that maybe she doesn’t really love him, rather, she just enjoy of being loved. She started to say that she doesn’t care about his future, and he can fall in love with anyone he wanted as anyone who had once love her had leave her. But even this reality doesn’t hurt her because she just enjoys the feeling of falling in love. Hope you will like the song.

18th Mar 2013 (成長 – Pong Nan)

The song that I chose for today is “成長” by Pong Nan. I personally quite like this song. This song with different lyrics was sung by Candy Lo (圍牆), but as Pong wrote the song, I guess he wanted to fill in his own lyrics to express the feeling that inspired him to write the melody. The direct English translation of the title is “grown up”.

The lyrics of the song are about how our world changes when we grow up. The song start off saying that at the age of four the protagonist and his friend always go out and play in the park. But he realised that at the age of eight, they spent so much time studying that they are getting more distant as they spent less time together. He said that he had tried to trust someone, but at the end he was hurt. Though he said that he will still live his life loyally, the result might not be what he wanted, but at least he would have enjoyed the journey. Growing up might make us more distance and resistant from each other, but because of that, we need to love each other even more. Perhaps knowledge will make us unconcern about our surrounding, but we need to get used to it. If our heart is so distant from each other, perhaps we should give each other a hug to confirm our existent. The protagonist and his friend were naively planning their wedding, but at the end, they see many of their friends divorced. This makes him believe that he shouldn’t worry about the ending, as long as he enjoyed his journey then that would be enough.

I found the message of the song quite meaningful. When we were young, our world was very simple. There were no office politics. But as we grown up, the world seems to get worse, people becoming more selfish, many people just wouldn’t consider others and they just wanted to get the most out of everything without leaving anything for others. So I guess what this song tries to say is that we should let go of these negative feeling, accept the world as we know it and do our own things. When things turn bad, just think of the good time that we had. Hope you will enjoy the song.

17th Mar 2013 (幸福摩天輪 – Eason Chan)

The song that I chose for today is “幸福摩天輪” by Eason Chan. This is one of Eason classic, it is from 1999. The direct English translation of the title is “Happy Ferris wheel”.

The lyrics of the song are about the protagonist expressing his love. The song start off saying that the protagonist is usually scare of height, but now he is in a Ferris wheel with his girlfriend, holding her hands so he is not scare about the height. The Ferris wheel reminds him of life, it can go up and down. When we are at the top we are like at the top of the world. At the lowest point, although it is sad, but he is glad that she is with him. Sometime his is worry when he is about to fall, but he is glad that she is there with him to face the difficulties. He believe that it is all these ups and downs that built the strong relationship between the two of them. Hope you will like the song.

16th Mar 2013 (今天你生日 – Nicholas Tse)

The song that I chose for today is “今天你生日” by Nicholas Tse. I chose this song for today because it is the first anniversary of this blog!!! Yeah!!! I never thought I can actually commit to write a post per day. Initially I thought it would be easy to choose a song each day as I got so many songs in my iTunes. But as times goes, each day is getting harder and harder as I realised that I only listen to a fraction of my collection. Then again, part of the purpose of this blog is to encourage me to listen to more of my collection :D so this is rather enjoyable even though it gets a bit difficult.

I purposely chose this song for the first anniversary of this blog because I got a story about this song. I remember many years ago, perhaps 10 to 12 years ago, it was my mum’s birthday. Back then I was so excited with computer (well, I actually still excited about computer and gadgets), that was the time when computer are getting more common. My mum, being a typical last generation person, hardly uses the computer (partly because she don’t quite know how to use it), only use the computer occasionally to read overseas news. Because it was her birthday, I search on internet to see whether I could change the logon music (it was window XP) to a happy birthday song, so that when she use the computer it will play happy birthday. I guess I was too optimistic….First, as a novice on computer, I didn’t manage to change the logon music. To fixed that I think I somehow manage to like the song with the internet explorer, so that when internet explorer opens, it plays the song. But the second problem occurs, on her birthday, she didn’t turn on the computer in the morning (she usually read the news in the morning). So I remember I came up with some excuse asking her to turn on the computer (and she was a bit reluctant). So I just can’t wait to see her reaction, I was standing next to her when the computer was loading. At the end, because the whole thing was so complicated, the song didn’t play automatically, I have to click it. I guess she wasn’t that excited either. You might want to ask what this story got to do with the song right, well, the song that I used for her so call birthday surprise was this song by Nicholas Tse. The English translation of the title is “Today is your birthday”. Not to mention that because the song is so not a typical birthday song (it is more like a rock and roll with a long intro section), my mum didn’t realised the song was for her birthday, so that birthday surprise was a complete failure.

The lyrics of the song are about birthday. This song got a very simple theme, it basically say that as today is your birthday, so the world is yours today. The song start off saying that you might have been treated badly and you might have been poor. You might have been unhappy, luck was never accompanying you and things only get worse and worse. But today is your birthday, your luck will definitely get better, snacks are all lying on the table waiting for you to eat them. Today is your birthday, no matter what others feel, they will all listen to you, all the people will become your best friends and give you presents. Yes, perhaps things weren’t great before and nothing had made you happy. But today is your birthday, everyone will play with you. Today you are god, so theoretically you will easily get happy and everything that you dream of will came true. Today you are god, so all your friends will make you happy.

I quite like the lyrics of this song as it is very positive, it keeps telling you that things will get better. If it is your birthday today, I wish you happy birthday. Hope you all will enjoy the song.

The song that I chose for today is “我們不是公主” by Mag Lam. Mag is one of the rising starts in Hong Kong. She was the winner of the Hong Kong version of “The Voice” season 2. I think she was sick last year so most of her work was on hold, but now she is back in business. The direct English translation of the title is “We are not princesses”.

I don’t quite get the full story of the lyrics, but from my understanding, it seems that the protagonist wanting someone to love her. At the beginning of the song, the protagonist seems to be able to get whatever she want, but she realised that she can’t control love. So she realised that she need to fight for her love as time is passes by and she is aging. She wishes that the guy that she loves will love her in return, but she is not a princess, so she can’t force him to love her back, so she just wish that he could be around her. Hope you will like the song.
