31st Jul 2012 (自動消失lonely days – Vivian Lai)

Today’s song is “自動消失lonely days” by Vivian Lai. Vivian was quite popular back in the 90’s, because Priscilla Chan went on further study and her voice is very similar to Priscilla, so the music company think that she got potential to become Priscilla second. She retired from her music career in 2002 and later on got married with a rich guy in Hong Kong. The English translation of the title is “Automatically disappeared lonely days”.

The lyrics of the song are about a girl is breaking up with her boyfriend, but in a way that she don’t want to have this relationship to drag on. Throughout the lyrics, it mentioned that the guy don’t want to breakup, but the protagonist feel that they are over and wanted the breakup. Hope you will enjoy this song.

30th Jul 2012 (越吻越傷心 – William So/William So & Kit Chan)

Today’s song is “越吻越傷心” William So. William was once quite popular in the 90’s, but as he didn’t managed to get a ground breaking song in the 00’s in Hong Kong, he move his market to Taiwan and Mainland China. Until recently he started his singing career in Hong Kong again, and it is quite successful at the moment. The song that I chose for today is one of his most popular song back in the 90’s. The English translation of the title is “Kisses more, hurt more”

This song is about a couple is together but their hearts are apart. Through the lyrics, the protagonist asked his girlfriend many questions about their daily life, but his girlfriend just ignored him. At the end he said that he knows that they don’t have feeling for each other anymore, then why border asking so many questions to show that they are far apart. I hope you will enjoy this song.

As a reader requested, here is the translation of the lyrics:
The protagonist said: “I asked you about which clothes will look best on me, but you stare back like as if you are looking at a boring stranger. I asked you which recent movie is refreshing, and in exchange, I get a series of silence as if my jokes are on longer interesting. I asked you whether you would kiss me when I am drunk, but you touch the corner of my lips like a stranger. I asked you whether your eyes looks like you lost your spirit because you are too tired from your work, but then I felt that your were trying to hide your shaking heart from me. The more we kiss the more it hurt, because there really isn’t any more point in asking. I know that a true kiss will feel more real. The more we kiss, the more it hurt. I guess I am mean for still being stupid. I know that our love is no longer as deep as before, but why I still asked about our distance. I see that you are sitting far away from me, so I asked whether you could sit closer, but you felt that it is a stupid question. I asked you whether you think about what kind of lover we are, but in exchange I get a series of silence as if you felted that a long time ago I am no longer attractive. I asked you that night when you see me why your hair was wet, but your face seems to tell me that I asked the wrong question like an idiot. I asked you about the rumour between you and him, but you snicker like you were secretly excited. The more we kiss the more it hurt, because there really isn’t any more point in asking. I know that a true kiss will feel more real. The more we kiss, the more it hurt. I guess I am mean for still being stupid. I know that our love is no longer as deep as before, but why I still try to approach you time after time?”

29th Jul 2012 (晴天陰天雨天 – Ronald Cheng)

The song for today is “晴天陰天雨天” by Ronald Cheng. I was going to talk about another song by Ronald, but I can’t find the video on youtube, so I decided to talk about this song instead. Like the one that I was intended to post, this is one of the songs that I really like from Ronald. Ronald was once quite popular in Hong Kong, back then I think it was the early 90’s. But later on he stops producing music, and have been forgotten by many. Note that he makes a comeback at around 2005 and did get popular again for a few years, but not as popular as he was back in the 90’s. He also stared in a few movies in the 00’s. But these days he disappeared again. The direct English translation of the title is “Sunny day, cloudy day and rainy day”

The lyrics of the song are a boy who have feeling toward a girl and just watching her from a distance. Basically what it say in the lyrics are that this love knows that he love this girl, but he hasn’t got the courage to express his feeling to her. He dreamed of her and always thinks about her. He said that he is happy enough to just watch over her from a distance. No matter what the weather is, he will wait for her.

I personally quite like the songs that Ronald sung in the 90’s,  they are very different to the songs that he sung in 00’s and they were quite unique. I hope you will like this song as well.

28th Jul 2012 (如果我是陳奕迅 – Mr.)

The song that I chose for today is “如果我是陳奕迅” by Mr. Mr. is a band in Hong Kong. This song came out in around 2009, it was Mr. first song. The direct English translation of the title is “If I am Eason Chan”. Eason Chan is a very popular singer in the Chinese community. It happened that the vocal from Mr. sound so much like Eason, they sound so similar that many people initially thought that the songs from Mr. was from Eason. This song is exactly about how it is to sound like Eason.

The lyrics is about the goods and bads of sounds like Eason Chan. It say things like they are not happy being a copycat, but it is not in their control as the vocal of the band was born with such voice. They wonder whether they would be popular because of this or they should train themselves harder to get popular. They wish that one day they could be like Eason, and they thanks Eason for motivating them. This is a fun song, so I guess we don’t need to take it so seriously. Hope you will enjoy this song.

27th Jul 2012 (絕 – Maggie Fu)

The song that I chose for today is “” by Maggie Fu. This song came out in 1999, from memory this song wasn’t that popular. The English translation of the title is “extreme”, but this word by itself in Chinese have quite a lot of meaning, in this context, I think what it means “hopeless”

The lyrics is very simple, it is just about the protagonist had just been dump by her boyfriend. She feels hopeless, and found there is no purpose in life. Personally I love this song, I like the melody of the song and the way Maggie express the feeling in the song. Hope you will like it as well.

26th Jul 2012 (一千零一個 – Miriam Yeung)

Today’s song is “一千零一個” by Miriam Yeung. This is one of my favourite of Miriam. The direct translation of the title to English is “One thousand and one”, but it actually means “The one and only”.

The lyrics are about love, the protagonist is expressing her feeling to her boyfriend though a conversation (I think this conversation is through her imagination, as it is quite fictional). She started the conversation by talking fairy tales, but her boyfriend found it boring. She then asks how about we talk about your new friend (referring to the boyfriend’s new girlfriend). Then she talks about a story, referring to her relationship with her boyfriend. She said: you probably haven’t have enough, how about I tell you another story, but you probably guessed that it is about me as well. The girl feels that her boyfriend don’t want to breakup with her because of his guilt, but she rather he did so, because she feel that it is giving her more pain to let this drag on. But obviously, the girl don’t want to be the one who asked for the breakup.

I love this song because Miriam sings it in a way that you can feel the highs and lows of the girl. Hope you will enjoy this song as much as I do.

25th Jul 2012 (她來聽我的演唱會 – Jacky Cheung)

The song that I chose for today is “她來聽我的演唱會” by Jacky Cheung. This song came out in 1999, back then this song was quite popular. The direct translation of the title is “She came to listen to my concert”. Quite clearly it is a song about a woman going to Jacky’s concert.

The lyrics is about the life of a woman, but the events are connected by Jacky’s concert. In the first part, it talks about the woman was 17, it was the first time she date with a boy. Her boyfriend waited in line overnight and spent all his money to get her two Jacky’s concert tickets. Sadly after 3 years, she received a letter from her boyfriend and they broke up. She was crying in a train station and it happened that it was playing Jacky’s songs. In the second part, the woman is now 25 years old. She again went to Jacky’s concert with her new boyfriend. But this time she realised that her boyfriend have an affair with another girl. She ignored her phone calls and just try to listen to music at night. It seems that when we get old breaking up is normal, she tried to act normal, but end up crying when she was singing Jacky’s song in Karaoke. In the third part, she is now 33. She thought she found her true love, but one day a young girl come and ask whether she can let go and asked her to leave her boyfriend. She again went to Jacky’s concert, tried to act tough, but again cried when she was singing Jacky’s song in the concert. In the fourth part, she is now 40 and again she went to Jacky’s concert. Her son asked her why she cry in the concert. Her husband has already fallen into sleep.  She just kept quiet and listens to Jacky’s concert.

This is a very touching song, and it is one of my favourite. Hope you will enjoy this song as well.

24th Jul 2012 (大大時代 – Alan Tam)

The song that I chose for today is “大大時代” by Alan Tam. The direct translation of the title is “Big Big Era”. This song was a theme song for a radio drama. The radio drama was called “黃金少年” (translated as “Golden Teenage”), it was a long radio drama, quite rare to have a radio drama that got 4 seasons. This song was the main song throughout all 4 seasons, but mostly played in the first season.

The 4 seasons radio drama got different themes for different seasons, but all 4 of them connect together. The first season is about how a guy achieving his dream, changing himself beyond his boundary. The main theme running through all 4 seasons is that how people chase their dreams, and in the process of that how things could get wrong and how those thing could affect another person.  Since this song is the theme song, the lyrics matches these ideas. The lyrics talks about chances. It mentions how one things rises another fall. How our values changes as we grown up. The lyrics are quite complicated, and I think everyone get something different out of the lyrics, so I guess it is best to leave you to understand the lyrics yourself. Hope you will enjoy this song.
大大時代 – Alan Tam

Lyrics:

The song that I chose for today is “讓我享受談戀愛” by Shiga Lin. Since I mentioned about this song yesterday, I guess I should talk about it in a post to complete the collection. The direct English translation of the title is “Let me enjoy love”. Like I mentioned yesterday, this song can be view as the first part of Shiga’s love story series. If you missed the others, you can get to them through the links below. The order goes like this: “讓我享受談戀愛” -> “I’m still loving you” -> “到此為止” -> “好好過”.

The lyrics are about a girl that wanted to fall in love. The protagonist is thinking about a boy and she dream that their love could last forever. In the lyrics it shows that this is the very beginning of their love story, not sure whether the boy loves her back, but she seems to only think of the good side of falling in love with him. So in a way it makes sense why she needs all the other songs to recover. I hope you will enjoy this song, and if you missed the others, you really should listen to them all at once to get a feel of the love story.

22nd Jul 2012 (好好過 – Shiga Lin)

Today’s song is “好好過” by Shiga Lin. This song is quite new, it just came out a few weeks ago. If you read the comments below the you tube video people listen to this song in conjunction with “讓我享受談戀愛”, “I’m still loving you” and “到此為止”. The title in English is “Living happily”.

Many people see the 4 songs as a package, in fact they do connect up to become a story. I haven’t talk about “讓我享受談戀愛” in my posts yet, but from the title you can guess that it is about a girl wanting to fall in love. “I’m still loving you” is about the girl just got dump and saying that she still love her ex and she don’t deserve this ending. There is bitterness and somewhat anger in the song. “到此為止” is about she got dump but she is still thinking about her ex, but it is less bitter and more about the happy things that they did together, so the song got more sorrow. So you can feel that the girl have forgiven her ex-boyfriend for dumping her, but just started to try to move on. Now in the latest song “好好過”, it is about that she still feels the sorrow and she is trying hard to move on. She is deeply hurt and she is experiencing lack of sleep. She is trying hard to move on and her friends are helping her to move on. She still think of him from time to time, but she hope that her sadness could fade away just like he had fade away from her life. At the end of the song, she is telling herself that everyone would experience this once in a life. She can now carry out her day to day life as normal, and she know that she had moved on. She knows that she is now ready to fall in love with a new guy.

Personally I quite like this song, as it brings a good ending (at least for now) to the story. Hope you will enjoy it as much as I do.

21st Jul 2012 (代你發夢 – Candy Lo)

The song that I chose for today is “代你發夢” by Candy Lo. This was from Candy’s “Muse” album from 2000. From memory it was one of the first few albums that I pay from my pocket. Back then it was really the first time I heard Candy’s songs, despite the fact that she have been singing a few years before then. And this was the song that I first heard of from this album. The direct English translation of the title is “Dream for you”, it was a song for an ad. Back then, Candy was with Sony Music, and the ad was for Sony MD player. I guess many people would have forgotten about MD (MiniDisc) player, they were the player that came after CD player. They were first introduced at around 1992, but they didn’t get too popular until late 90’s. I remember this song came out when Sony sell it MZ-N1 MiniDisc player, the first player the can record at a faster speed. However, the glory of MD player didn’t last long as it place was taken over by MP3 player, which is a lot smaller in size and carry lot more music (though usually at lower quality).

As this song was written for an ad, the lyrics is quite hard sell. It heavily related back to MiniDisc player. It basically talks about how the MD player could connect you to the world (i.e. by listening different from the world), it could also mute out noises and let you enjoy your own world.

Not quite sure why I particular like this song, it was because of this song that I bought the album and I remember I keep playing it over and over again. I hope you will enjoy this song as much as I do.

20th Jul 2012 (女人心 – Anita Mui)

The song for today is “女人心” by Anita Mui. After writing the post for yesterday, I realised that I actually haven’t talk about Anita’s songs by themselves. I have posted a few Anita’s songs, but it always came along as an added bonus. So today I have chosen a song by Anita that is not directly related to other songs. Personally this is one of my favourite from Anita. The direct English translation is “Women’s heart”, but in terms of the meaning, it translates closer to “Women’s feeling”. From memory this was a song for a movie.

My understanding of the lyrics is that it is about a woman who married to a man that she love, but yet this marriage was an arranged marriage and the man don’t love her in return so they have to act in front of the guests in their wedding. From Anita voice and her way of expressing her feeling in the song, you can feel that this woman is mentally very strong, which really match with the lyrics of the song. I hope you will enjoy this song.

19th Jul 2012 (風的季節 – Paula Tsui/Anita Mui)

The song that I chose for today is “風的季節” by Paula Tsui. This song is quite famous back in the days when Paula was popular. I remember I used to laugh so badly when this song was played on TV because I didn’t have a clue what she was trying to say in the music video and all I see her did in the music video was just walking around. The direct English translation of the song is “The season of the wind”.

The lyrics of the song are about love. It talks about how the protagonist didn’t aware the summer has already past until she feels the wind blowing. It passed away just like time. She thinks about the good time that she had and felt sad. She just want the wind to blow her tears and sadness away just like how it blow away summer.

I guess the younger generation have never heard this song, as it came from the early 80’s. What make this song very famous (especially spreading it to younger generation) was that Anita Mui sung this song in a competition, which later she won and became a big star throughout 80’s and 90’s. I have also linked Anita version below, hope you will like this song.

18th Jul 2012 (I’m still loving you – Shiga Lin)

Today’s song is “I’m still loving you” By Shiga Lin. This song came out in 2011 and it was a theme song for a movie that Shiga star in. I haven’t seen the movie myself as I am not interested in that type of movie, but this song is very nice, it demonstrate the beauty of Shiga’s voice. She also managed to bring out the sorrow of the song.

The lyrics is in English, so I guess I don’t really have to go in depth to translate it. The main idea of the song is that it describing the feeling of betrayal in love. The protagonist is questioning by her ex-boyfriend left her while they had so many good times together.

From the lyrics point of view, I think this song can be seen as the prequel of Singa’s “到此為止”. I really like this song, so I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do.

17th Jul 2012 (我說過要你快樂 – Eddie Ng)

The song that I chose for today is “我說過要你快樂” by Eddie Ng. Eddie was never really popular as a singer, though he is known more by his song writing in the Hong Kong music industry. This song that I chose today is pretty much the most popular song that he sung. The direct English translation of the title is “I said I want you to be happy”. While the title sounds more like it got a positive message, or like a wedding song, in reality it is the opposite.

The lyrics are about that the protagonist let her girlfriend goes to found her true love. In the lyrics it has shown that the protagonist is quite upset that he has to let her go, loving her in a way that no one else knew. Hope you will enjoy this song.

16th Jul 2012 (誰叫我 – Emil Chau)

The song that I chose for today is “誰叫我” by Emil Chau. Emil was once very famous in Hong Kong (around the early 90’s). He was born in Hong Kong, but later on went to Taiwan. He became popular in Taiwan first, so popular that even Hong Kong people knows him. As he was so popular, he also started his music career in Hong Kong. In the 90’s he was framed as the “Killer of the 4 kings of Canton Pop”, people see that he is as popular as the 4 kings of Canton pop. But in the late 90’s he stop producing Cantonese album, and slowly he was fading out of the Hong Kong music industry. The direct English translation of the song’s title is “Who called me”, while in contact of the lyrics, it actually means “Why”.

The lyrics is about questioning ourselves. The lyrics go like this: Why can’t I afford what I needed to pay for, why can’t I leave my busy work, why can’t I hold on to my happy feeling, this is such a fragile feeling. Why can’t I start the things that I planned, why can’t I leave the warmness of going home, why do I worry about the tiredness from romance, but when it is over I regret. Is it because I am an average guy? Is it because I fall in love too deep that the love turns to hate? Or should I blame the world for the fact that there is no perfection? Why do I felt cold when I was lonely, scare to speak up when I was in love and feel weak when I was in the dark? Please don’t tell me that average guys will always think too much. Who would wish to have love but lose ourselves and who likes to stay in the past but not to think of the future? I guess I just have to blame myself for releasing my anger when I was tired, get drunk when I lost myself and only to regain myself when everything was over. Please don’t tell me that I only think too much because I was bored. Why.

Above is pretty much the translation of the lyrics. I personally quite like the lyrics, it really get us thinking about life and why we act the way that we are. I also think that the song is quite positive by giving us a bad example of what’s happened if we just keep thinking about the past. I hope you will enjoy this song.
