Hi everyone, I am posting a few songs a week onto this blog. Hope you will like my pick for the day. Feel free to post links for songs that you think are related to my pick :D
The
song that I chose for today is “喝采” by Danny Chan. Danny was very
famous in the 80’s. However, he was found to be unconscious in his house in
1992 and passed away in 1993. This song is one of his most popular songs. The English
translation of the title is “Cheer”.
This
song is full of positive energy. The lyrics of the song tell us that we need to
feel positive about our future. We need not to be unhappy in our life, we can escape
unhappiness. As long as we stay confident and hope that our future will be
bright, then our future will be bright. Hope you will enjoy this song and hope
that it will give you some positive energy.
The
song that I chose for today is “捨不得你” by Sammi Cheng. This is one of
the songs that make Sammi popular. This song came out in 1995 and it was a big
hit. The title is a bit hard to translate directly, but I think the closest English
translation is “I don’t want to forget you”.
The
lyrics of the song are about the protagonist had chose to break up with her boyfriend.
Through the lyrics, she told us that she had a great time with him and that she
had learn a lot from him. But she now had chosen something else over him
(perhaps her job). She is a bit regret about her choice, but she told herself
that she was the one who made the decision. So all she could do now is to wish
that he could found his true love. Hope you will enjoy the song.
The
song that I chose for today is “L'll Red Riding Hood” by Amanda Seyfried. The
original version was sung by Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs. I heard this song
in a random YouTube video that I clicked on today. I love this song when I
first heard it, the melody is great and Amanda’s voice is also great. So that’s
why I chose this song for today. I think it is also nice to talk about an
English song, I haven’t talk about one since at least a month ago.
The
lyrics of the song are quite simple, but interesting. The lyrics talks about
the little red riding hood through the mouth of a wolf. At the beginning we
have no idea the narrator is a wolf. It started of telling us that the little
red riding hood looks beautiful. He thinks that the riding hood is exactly what’s
a big bad wolf is looking for. He also thinks that it is unsafe for her to
travel in the forest by herself. So he told himself (and perhaps the little red
riding hood as well) that she would be safer to walk with him. Then now he told
us that he is a wolf, he said that he will keep his sheep suit up for now so
that she would feel more comfortable to walk with him. He wanted to hold her
and get close to her, but he told us that he is worried that she would think he
is a bad wolf. At the end of the song, he review that he is the wold to her, of
cause trying to eat her.
In
Amanda Seyfried’s version, she seems to skip the last part of the song, which
was the part that tried to show the dark side of the wolf. So if you would like
to listen to the full story, I think you will enjoy the original version more.
If you are in just for the melody and not so much about the lyrics (or perhaps
you just want a good ending for the story) then I think Amanda’s version would
suit you better. Hope you will enjoy the song.

The
song that I chose for today is “無限” by F.I.R. F.I.R is a band in
Taiwan. The name stand for “Fairyland in Reality”, the name also is a shorten
form of the initial of the members (Faye, Ian, Real). In 2004, they were quite
popular in the Chinese community, but in the last few years I haven’t heard of
them, I guess they are now focus more on their Taiwanese market. The English translation
of the title is “Infinity”.
The
lyrics of the song are about the band will produce without border and limit.
They will only create song that they like and enjoy. The lyrics are very simple
and to a certain degree it is quite meaningless, but what I like about the song
is the melody. The fast pace music really get my heart pumping, it somehow give
me a sense of happiness just by listening to the song. Hope you will enjoy this
song.
The
song that I chose for today is “挑戰者” by Mimi Lo. This song is quite
old, it came out in 1995. Mimi was never really that popular. In fact she seems
to fade away from the music industry for a long time until a few years ago, she
was invited to a popular music contest show (it was the Hong Kong version of ‘The
Voice’) and performed this song with one of the contestant. Many of the judge
and the audiences realised how good Mimi could sing. Since then she became a
bit more active. The English translation of the title is “Challenger”.
The lyrics
of the song are about love. The protagonist is saying that there is this guy
who really loves her, she has reject him many time as she got a boyfriend, but
this guy never give up. Her boyfriend on the other hand doesn’t seem to care.
Slowly she found that she don’t resist this guy as much as she did. She also
start to compare this guy with her boyfriend and wonder why this guy always
bring her happiness while her boyfriend always make her angry. If it keeps
going like this, she believes that one day she cannot resist this guy and will
fall in love with him. So she wishes that her boyfriend could show more of his
love to her to stop her falling in love with this guy. Hope you will like the
song.
The
song that I chose for today is “十年如當日” by Gin Lee. Gin is quite new in
the Hong Kong music industry, but surely she got the potential to be very
popular. The English translation of the title is “10 years on and it’s still
like that day”.
The lyrics
of the song are a bit said. The protagonist remembers that once a point in
time, a boy had asked her out. In that dinner, she feel that she love this guy
and she feel that this guy really like her as well. However, he didn’t end up being
his boyfriend. She regrets about this, she regrets that back then she didn’t
take his love seriously. She thinks perhaps they were too young back then, she
lament that she missed the chance. In the last 10 years she have fallen in love
so many times, but never had a good ending. It only until now she realised how
important that boy was. Hope you will like the song.
The
song that I chose for today is “只會因你唱” by Ekin Cheng. This is one of
my favourite from Ekin. I heard it on radio yesterday and so I thought I will
post it up here hopping that it will
bring you back some of your old memories. The English translation of the song
is “I will only sing for you”.
The
lyrics of the song are very simple. The song is about the protagonist broke up
with his love, but he still love her. Every night he sing the song that he
heard when they broke up. He tried to forget about her, but he can’t, his
memories of her just keep coming up in his head. So he hope that they could be
together again. Hope you will like the song.
The
song that I chose for today is “搜神記” by Joey Yung. Joey is considered
as one of the tier one singer in Hong Kong. I personally quite like the tune of
this song. The title of the song is the same as an ancient Chinese book, which
is a compilation of weird/ghost/miracle stories. Though the song has nothing to
do with the book apart from sharing the same name. The English translation of
the title is “In Search of the Deities”
The
lyrics of the song is quite complex, and I don’t think I fully understand the whole
story. But my interpretation is that the protagonist was in love with a man
that she likes, but she was betrayed. So she tell herself to move on, she tell herself
that if she move on she will have a brighter future and she will be able to
create a whole new story in her life. Hope you will like the song.
The
song that I chose for today is “蒸發” by Nicholas Tse. This song is
quite old, but is a few of those songs that I really like. In fact the album
that this song was in was one of my favourite albums. The English translation
of the title is “Evaporated”.
This
song is about acceptant. The lyrics didn’t go in depth of explaining what the
protagonist was doing, but it seems that the love between him and his lover is
not accepted by this world. He feel that acceptant have been evaporated from
the world. He wishes that the two of them could just evaporate from the world
too (to free themselves from others). Hope you will like the song.
The
song that I chose for today is “幾分傷心幾分癡” by Dave Wong. Personally I
don’t like Dave too much, but I have to say his way of singing is very unique,
at least he is the few that I heard sung in this style. The English translation
of the title is “A bit of sadness, a bit of craziness”.
The
lyrics of the song is about the protagonist broke up with his girlfriend unwillingly.
He basically tells us that losing her is like losing the purpose of life. Hope
you will enjoy the song.
The
song that I chose for today is “男孩像你” By Fiona Sit. The English translation
of the title is “A boy like you.
The
lyrics of the song are about the protagonist had fallen in love with a gay guy.
The girl said that she had met many guy but no one can treat her as good as her
gay friend. They always spent time together, and she feel that she is even
closer to him that his boyfriend. However, she doesn’t understand why they can’t
be together, why his boyfriend always came first. Hope you will enjoy the song.
The
song that I chose for today is “愛的故事 . 下集(但願他珍惜你)” by Eric Suen. A few days ago
I talked about “愛的故事 . 上集”, so I think I should complete the
story by talking about part 2 today. The direct English translation of the
title is “Love story. Part 2 (Wish he would cherish you)”. This song is not as
popular as part 1. To certain degree, the story doesn’t seem to be directly
connected.
The
lyrics of the song are about the protagonist worries about the girl that he loves.
The song start off telling us that it was a rainy day, the girl was telling the
protagonist how bad her boyfriend is treating her. He know that her boyfriend
had hurt her many times, but he feel wrong to make a decision for her, so he
pretend that he was just looking at the sea. He know that at the end, she
wouldn’t leave her, but he told us that he will never change his heart. So he
wish that her boyfriend could treat her better.
If
you remember from part 1 of the story, it ends with the protagonist telling us
that he don’t know what will happen to the story between himself and his love.
In this part 2, it started off telling us that the girl he love already have a
boyfriend. So it was unclear whether the protagonist told the girl that he
loves her or he found out she already has a boyfriend before he had the chance.
We could only use our own imagination to fill up the gap. Hope you will enjoy
the song.
The
song for today is “無名指” by Priscilla Chan. Like I
mentioned in my previous posts, Priscilla is one of my all-time favourite
singer. This song came out in 2008, it was play on the radio when it came out,
but from memory, it never got really popular. It also never put into an album,
she only sung this song in her concert in 2008, so the only version available
to the public is the live version. The English title of the song is “Ring
finger”. This is the official Chinese cover version of “Ne lui parlez plus
d'elle” by Lara Fabien.
The lyrics
of the song are about love. Many said that this song is about the ups and downs
that Priscilla gone through in her marriage/love, and in many ways it does
matches with the event in Priscilla’s life. It started by taking us back to the
protagonist life when she was 15. Her parents have a high expectation of her,
so she study hard, but at the same time, she dreamed that she could have a
boyfriend. (This matches with Priscilla’s life, from memory she went to tier
one school.) Then the take us to the age of 25/26 of the protagonist. The protagonist
is very busy, she said she have fallen in love two times, but it didn’t work
out. She always wishes that she could meet the next one, but she always end up
have a life lesson (i.e. it again didn’t work out for her). (Again this part of
the lyrics matches with Priscilla’s life. She started her music career very
early in her life, so at the age of around 25, she was already a big star in
Hong Kong. It would be no doubt that she would be so busy. Also it was known
that she had fallen in love a few times around that age.) She wonder who’s
fault it was, or perhaps they just start of blindly. Why is it so hard to have
a ring on her finger. Because she have
been deeply hurt, so she tried even harder to find her Mr. Right. Every time
she hope that it will end up well, but every time she was disappointed and left
with regret. The song end with the
protagonist say that its getting late now, she don’t want to think too much
(perhaps, she is referring to that she is getting old, and love is not for her
anymore). So she with these experience, she will just tell herself to pretend
she had once found her true love.
It
is a very sad song. Personally I really like the melody, and I truly believe that
it got all the elements of a hit song. But perhaps Priscilla is no longer as
popular as she was, so the song just never got popular in 2008. If you haven’t
listen to this song before, I hope you will like it.
The
song I pick for today is “但願你明白” by Charlie Yeung. Charlie was
quite famous in the 90’s, not too sure what happened to her but she fade out
from the music industry at the end on the 90’s. To be honest I don’t remember
any of her songs. I heard this song on a radio show yesterday and it bring back
quite a lot of memory. To my surprise though, I didn’t realised that this song
was sung by Charlie, and that’s why I decided to talk about it today, in hope
that it will bring back your old memories. The English translation of the title
is “Wish you will understand”.
The
lyrics of the song are about the protagonist don’t want her friend to introduce
potential boyfriend to her. She understand that her friends are only trying to
be nice to her, but to a certain degree she is annoyed by their action. Hope
you will enjoy the song.
The
song that I chose for today is “愛的故事 . 上集” by
Eric Suen. Eric was quite popular in the 90’s but for some reason he sort of
fade out from the music industry. In the last 5 years he reappeared, but I
think recently he had damaged his vocal cord, so he is now resting. This song that I chose is one of his most
famous song, the English translation of the title is “Love story. Part I”.
There is a part 2 of this and they are related, but I will only talk about part
1 today.
The
lyrics of the song are about the protagonist is waiting for the girl that he likes
to fall in love with him. The song is very simple. At the songs end with the
protagonist hoping that they would be together (the story is continue in “Lovestory. Part II”.) Hope you will enjoy the song.
The
song that I chose for today is “明日有明天” by Priscilla Chan, my all-time
favourite singer. When I was a kid, Priscilla was very popular, back then I
quite like her songs, but never got too attached. Though around 4 years ago, in
2008, one day I suddenly really wanted to listen to one of her famous song “夜機”.
So that night I dig in my music library and I found it. I think I looped it
over 30 times that night. In the following few night I keep digging for her
songs, and I just can’t stop myself from listening to her songs. Her songs are
so unique, her voice was wonderful (these day her voice is a lot deeper, so
when she sing her old songs it feel difference) and the melody were perfect.
Ever since then I have been searching everywhere for the CD and albums, buying
them from second hand shop, or from music store when the companies reproduce
her albums. I think I only got 2 to 3 album missing until I got her entire
collection. At one point I was really thinking to specially order the missing
album directly from the music company, but it turn out to be very expensive, so
I am still looking in second hand store in hope to found them.
Anyway,
back to the song. The English translation of the title is “Tomorrow got
tomorrow”. This song is not too old, it came out in 2003. If I am not wrong,
this was one of the song in her latest album (not counting her concert CD from
2008). From memory, this song was her own story. The message of the song is
that if we are sad, don’t worry, things will past, and it is because of these
sadness that make us value our happiness. So throughout the lyrics, it
mentioned that we shouldn’t be too sad when things goes wrong, because if we
haven’t gone through sadness, our happiness wouldn’t last. And if we are always
happy, we could one day forget what happy feel like as we got so used to it. If
we are so unhappy or worry that we can’t sleep at night, don’t worry, just
watch planes take off and land, at worse we will just sleep in the morning. The
bad day will pass and tomorrow will be a new day. It ends the song by telling
us that if we can cry then we have already released out unhappiness. Even in
the case if people are just watching you from the side and not helping, we
should be glad that we are not alone as there are still people watching us. And
because we have experienced sadness, it make our smile last longer.
I
seriously think that this song is tailor made for Priscilla, as Priscilla was
always considered as a person that has gone through so much ups and downs in
her life. I hope that you will like the song, and if you are unhappy, I hope
this song would give you the positive energy that you will need.
The
song that I chose for today is “長空” by Beyond. Recently I keep
listening to Beyond’s songs. When I was a kid, I really don’t understand why
people love Beyond so much, back then, to me they were just too noisy. Though
listening to their song now I think I finally understand. Their songs just
never age, listening to their old songs feel so modern. On top of that, I really
like their voices. In the old songs, Ka Kui’s voice really stands out. In the
newer songs, Paul’s voice got very deep, it is perfect for their sorrow and
powerful songs. The song that I chose for today is actually a theme song for a
movie (無間道II, the second part of Infernal Affairs trilogy).
The
lyrics of this song are about how everyone is trying to hide their intension
and so we feel very alone and confuse, we can no longer distinguish between our
friends and enemies. Hope you will enjoy the song.
The
song that I chose for today is “廣播道Fans殺人事件” by
Soft Hard. Soft Hard is a performance group in Hong Kong, they don’t just sing
they actually work on many difference things. At the beginning, dating back to
the 1989, the two member of the group Jan Lam and Eric Kot worked together in a
radio station and they had their own program. Later on they started their
singing career. At the same time, they move into TV shows and stars in movies.
Nowadays, both of the members got their own clothing brand, and they are seen
as one of the leading fashion figure. The song that I chose for today is one of
their most popular song. The English translation of the title is “Broadcast
Drive’s Fans murdering case”.
This
is rather a fun song. Although the title might sound very serious, but the
lyrics of the song actually talks about how crazy fans can get when they see
their idol. Broadcast Drive is a road in Hong Kong. Up to late 80’s many of the
media head quarter were located there (3 TV stations and 2 radio stations), so
making it very common to see a start passing by. There used to be many fans
just waiting outside these companies just to see their idols. The lyrics of the
song tell us that fans are important to stars as they a measure of how popular
a star is. Also it tells us when these fans see their idol, they go uncontrollable.
Hope you will enjoy the song.
The
song I pick for today is “Someday I’ll fly” by G.E.M. G.E.M. is a relative new
singer, she started her music career around 4 years ago. G.E.M. is her stage
name, it stands for “Get Everybody Moving.”
This
song is quite simple. Although the lyrics is quite complex and quite long, but
the central story is that the protagonist got hurt, she wanted to escape, she
wanted to cry to release all the feeling inside her. In her daily life, she
tried to cover up her feeling, but every day she is hoping that she will find
her Mr. Right to save her from sadness. At the end she found him, and how she
know she have hope in her life. Hope you will enjoy the song.
The
song for today is “葬月” by Jacky Cheung. This is one of
the songs from the musical “雪狼湖”. This musical was very popular
when it came out around 1995. One of the reasons why it was so popular I think
was because Jacky was staring in it and he was at his peak of his career. The English
translation of the title is “Bury the moon”.
The
lyrics of this song describe the protagonist feeling. The beginning of the song describe the
protagonist felt lonely, he felt that only the moon would understand him. Later
on the song, he further describe his tragic, he felt all the bad things will
happen on him and there are no hope. Hope you will enjoy the song.
