The song for today is “1874” by Eason Chan. This is one of my favourite of Eason. This so came out in the 2002, from memory it wasn’t one of the song from the album that got promoted on TV or radio.

The lyrics of the song are about the protagonist questioning why he still hasn’t met his perfect match. He suspects that there is this lady in an unknown country, in an unknown time, perhaps before he was born, was waiting for him all her life. They never meet, or perhaps she have already passed away, or perhaps existed but just sounds like an imagined person, they were supposed to be together, but she happened to travelled to a different time? So he wonder why she was born 100 earlier, is it that he travelled to the wrong time? If he was born in 1874, even though they might never meet each other, but perhaps they could still die together. Or even if 1879 was in a war time, they could at least travel the war zone together (he prefer this than net meeting his perfect match). Or even if they were running away from their country, they could still be together.

I guess what I like about this song is that it show how much the protagonist wanted to fall in love. So despite that he thought of excuses to why he hasn’t found his perfect match. But he never realised that there might not be a perfect match, or perhaps, his perfect match in real life is not as perfect as the perfect match he thought of. Many of us do these and only at some point, we realised that what we are looking for does not exist, and it is too late to turn back to found the second best. Hope you will enjoy the song.

1874 – Eason Chan
