30th Nov 2012 (一步一生 – Andy Hui)

The song that I chose for today is “一步一生” by Andy Hui. Personally I quite like this song. The English translation of the title is “A step is like a life time”.

The lyrics of the song are about life. The protagonist told us when he was young his parents and relative have big hope in him, they think he will be a great man when he grow up. As he get old, his friends also look up to him. However this gave him great pressure. He feel that every decision that he make have to be right, and he is so worry that he would do something wrong and get everyone around to be disappointed. So every step for him is like a life time long as there is so much pressure. He hopes that someone could share the pressure with him, someone who could walk the path with him and tell him not to worry and give him strength. Hope you will like this song.

29th Nov 2012 (我是憤怒 – Beyond)

The song that I chose for today is “我是憤怒” by Beyond. This song is one of my favourite fast pace songs. The English translation of the title is “I am anger”.

From the title, I guess you could already guess what this song is about. The lyrics of the song basically describe the protagonist is angry. He is because of someone and he wanted to payback. I like to listen to this song when I am angry, as I feel that it somewhat release my anger. Hope you will enjoy it as well.

28th Nov 2012 (朋友二號 – Patrick Tang)

The song that I chose for today is “朋友二號” by Patrick Tang. This was one of my favourite songs when I was young. I didn’t quite get the meaning of the lyrics back then. The English translation of the title is “Friend number 2”.

The lyrics of the song are about a boy who has been treated as a close friend by a girl. This guy loves the girl but the girl didn’t know (or perhaps she knows but pretended not to know.) When the girl broke up with her boyfriend, he is the first person that she can think of as a friend that can accompany her. However, when the conflict was solve, she leave this guy and went back to her boyfriend. So this guy just wishes that the girl and her boyfriend could have an ongoing argument so that she can spent more time with him. Hope you will like the song.

27th Nov 2012 (小城大事 – Miriam Yeung)

The song that I chose for today is “小城大事” by Miriam Yeung. This song was very popular when it came out in 2004. The English translation of the title is “Little city, big event”.

The lyrics of the song are rather sad. It is about a pair of couple, they love each other so much, but one day the man lost his memory and forgot everything about his past, even his fiancée. Then he started a new relationship with another woman. Without the memory of his past, he resists his fiancée, but his fiancée still love him deeply. Knowing that nothing could be done, his fiancée accepted that he will not return to her, but she wishes that he could remember his feeling toward her even though he got no memory of her. Hope you will like the song.

26th Nov 2012 (Dumb Ways to Die – Tangerine Kitty)

The song that I chose for today is “Dumb Ways To Die” by Tangerine Kitty. This is a promotion song used by Metro (the operator of Melbourne’s train in Australia). I recently heard this song and I thought it is a fun song. To be honest, I quite like this advertising campaign that Metro runs, it is not hard sell, the ad is easily remember and the song is beautiful as well (not to mention the melody get stuck in your head quite easily).

The lyrics of the song are really just about the different ways that you can die stupidly. For example, setting fire on your head or teaching yourself how to fly. Of cause, the last few ways are related to train accidents as it was a campaign for train accident. You can found more information at the official website for the campaign (http://dumbwaystodie.com/ ) It also provide links for downloading the song for free (or purchase from iTune store, which I guess it in higher quality.) Hope you will like the song.

25th Nov 2012 (唯一 – Leehom Wang)

The song that I chose for today is “唯一” by Leehom Wang. This song is rather old, but it is one of the iconic songs of Leehom and it is also one of the few song that I know by Leehom (I don’t listen to Mandarin song too much). The English translation of the title is “Only one”.

The lyrics of the song are about how much the protagonist misses his ex-girlfriend. It starts off telling us that the promise that they make no longer stand. He remembers he used to hold her hand, but now he can’t seems to remember how she had smiled. He wanted their world to go back to how it was but he knows that it is impossible. He knows that she will remain as his only true love. Hope you will like the song.

24th Nov 2012 (我愛U – Wild Child)

The song that I chose for today is “我愛U” by Wild Child. Wild Child is a band in Hong Kong, though they are not too famous. This song feature Gin Lee and Wan Hoi. I guess most of you know Gin Lee, if not click one of the link in the related posts and you will found my previous post on Gin Lee. Wan Hoi though, I guess most people don’t know who he is. Wan Hoi is a writer, but also an enthusiast of conspiracy, alien and religion, he is actually quite famous in these sectors. Anyways, the English translation of the title is “I love U”. In here the “U” doesn’t mean “you”, but “U” as in UFO.

The lyrics are about UFO. It basically just discusses the UFO culture. It says there is always a bunch of people join together and search for UFO in the sky. They might spot a few bright spots in the sky and question whether they are UFO or not, but they will never found out the answer. Hope you will like the song.

23rd Nov 2012 (傳說 – Rowena Cortes)

The song that I chose for today is “傳說” by Rowena Cortes. This song is the ending song of a Japanese cartoon “千年女王”. I guess many people in Hong Kong who born in the 80’s would remember this song as the cartoon was so popular back then. Anita Mui also sings this song, though I am not sure why they change the singer. The direct English translation of the title is “Legend”.

The lyrics of the song are really just describing the protagonist of the cartoon. It said that legend has it that there was a queen that has long hair and her eyes were like stars. She is very beautiful but also mysterious. The meaning of the song is not so important, I am quite sure anyone in Hong Kong who was born in the 80’s would heard this song before and would probably bring them back some memory. Hope you will like it as well.

22nd Nov 2012 (夕陽、家鄉 – Monica Chan)

The song that I chose for today is “夕陽、家鄉” by Monica Chan. This song is very old. I guess many people don’t know who Monica is. Monica started her career in the early 80’s. She was in the same company as Priscilla Chan and they were under the same manager. At the beginning, their manager put them together with Luisa Lai and produced an EP (only have around 4 songs). But later on the company gone bankruptcy. Priscilla was the luckier one, she happened to make her name before the company gone bankrupt, so she got an contract from Polygram (now become part of Universal Music). Luisa Lai went into the television side of things and she is now a TV host in TVB (the biggest television broadcasting company in Hong Kong). I think for Monica, she decided to quit.

The title of the song in English is “Sunset, Home”. The lyrics are about love. The lyrics are a bit complex, so I hope I am getting it correct. What I think it is about is that the protagonist is thinking back her first love. She know that it is over, so she is not so much regretting, but just think of it as she wanted to go back to those time and enjoy it again. Hope you will like the song.

21st Nov 2012 (Forever – Grasshopper)

The song that I chose for today is “Forever” by Grasshopper. Quite different to their usual songs, this one is a rather slow pace song, and it is not a dancing song either.

The lyrics of the song are about love. It is about a pair of couple that they love last forever. It tell us the promises that they make to each other, like they will not leave other if they got poor or sick. Hope you will like the song.

20th Nov 2012 (重回布拉格 – Chet Lam)

The song that I chose for today is “重回布拉格” by Chet Lam. Chet is one of the more popular indie singers in Hong Kong. Most of his songs are not too popular, but they are quite unique. To me his songs are usually very relaxing. The English translation of the title is “Back to Prague”.

The lyrics of the song are about memory. The protagonist travelled to Prague, and found that the city hasn’t changed a bit. While he walked pass a coffee shop, he thought he saw his ex-girlfriend, and he started to remember the things that they did together when they were in Prague. He told us that he will only remember the good time that they had. At the end of the song, he finally let go of this relationship and tried to move on. Hope you will like the song.

19th Nov 2012 (跑步機上 – Joey Yung)

The song that I chose for today is “跑步機上” by Joey Yung. This song came out in 2008. The English translation of the title is “On the treadmill”.

The lyrics of the song actually describe out world that just focus on slim. The main message that it tried to tell us is that many of us try to get thin, and we thought that getting thin would bring us a lot closer to what we wanted. Here the protagonist said that she is running on the treadmill like she have been follow, so she try to run faster and faster. But all she is doing is tried to get thin so perhaps the guy that she love might love her back. But what she started to realised is that in front of her is just a bunch of number, and all she after now is just to push herself so the number get higher and the treadmill get faster.

I personally quite like to listen to this song when I am in the gym. Not so much because of the lyrics but I found that it beats are quite fast and quite suited for gym exercise. Hope you will enjoy the song.

18th Nov 2012 (東京百貨 – Stephanie Cheng)

The song that I chose for today is “東京百貨” by Stephanie Cheng. I don’t think this song got too popular when it came out, but it surely not a bad song. The English translation of the title is “Tokyo department store”

The lyrics of the song are about love. It told us that the protagonist meet her ex-boyfriend in Tokyo. They meet in a restaurant, both were lining up, but her ex-boyfriend decided to go to the next floor for another restaurant as the line was too long. Perhaps she had similar thought so she followed him. Now they have broken up, and the protagonist went back to Tokyo to revisit the places that they went to before. Hope you will like the song.

17th Nov 2012 (ABC – MC Jin)

The song that I chose for today is “ABC” by MC Jin. MC Jin can be said as the person who really started the Rapping trend in Hong Kong music industry. He is actually quite famous in the US as well. Back in the early 2000, he did a lot of free style rapping in the US and win for 7 weeks straight. In 2007 he helped Barack Obama to elect for US president. I think in around 2008 or 2009 he moved back to Hong Kong and developed his music career there. The title “ABC” means American Born Chinese.

The lyrics of the song are about himself (guess you would have probably guessed from the title, as Jin was one himself). This song really just describe his life. I guess the main purpose of the song is that through the lyrics it tried to bridge himself with his audience in Hong Kong. The song tell us that when he was in US, he grew up like those in Hong Kong. He told us that he still watch the TV show from Hong Kong, he drinks Vitasoy just like every kid in Hong Kong (Vitasoy is a soy milk brand, it is very popular in Hong Kong, perhaps even in Asia in general). So perhaps he was born and grew up overseas, he is very similar to his audience in Hong Kong. Hope you will like the song.

16th Nov 2012 (他不慣被愛 – Janice Vidal)

The song that I chose for today is “他不慣被愛” by Janice Vidal. This is Janice newest song, and I think it will get very popular. Though it seems that the image of Janice release with this song looks very weird, she doesn’t looks like herself anymore. The English translation of the title is “He is not used to being loved”.

The lyrics of the song are about misunderstanding. The lyrics tell us that the protagonist has this boyfriend, at the beginning he expressed that he loves her and she accepted. But perhaps she care about him too much and perhaps he wanted to take charge about their relationship, he seems to dislike her. So she questions is it so wrong to just care about the future of her love one and taking care of their daily life. She concluded that perhaps it was her fault to show her love to him too easily. Hope you will enjoy the song.

15th Nov 2012 (Funny Jealousy – Jill Vidal)

The song that I chose for today is “Funny Jealousy” by Jill Vidal. Jill is the younger twin sister of Janice Vidal. She is no longer in the Hong Kong music industry as her music company stopped all her work when she got caught in Japan taking drugs. Although her voice is very similar to Janice and to a certain degree her singing style as well, she wasn’t that famous at all. Many people just see her as a backup Janice. Despite that Jill and Janice voice are very similar (and their looks as well as they are twin), the company is probably aware of that so their imaging are very different. While Janice is more the girl next door feel and mostly sings slower pace songs, Jill’s image is more on the sexy side, singing more fast beat songs. The song that I chose today is a bit different to Jill’s usual style, in fact more like a Janice’s song.

The lyrics of the song area about two girls, they are very close friends. The protagonist found that sometime she is a bit jealous about her friend, that her friend looks better and got a boyfriend before she does. But she knows that deep down they are good friends and their friendship will last forever. I guess this is typical girl’s feeling, but it demonstrates it through the lyrics very well. Hope you will enjoy it.

14th Nov 2012 (嫌棄 – Gigi Leung)

The song that I chose for today is “嫌棄” by Gigi Leung. This is one of my favourite from Gigi. The English translation of the title is “Disgusted” (this is not quite right, but I think it is the closest word to it).

The lyrics of the song are about the protagonist not knowing what is exactly wrong between her and her boyfriend. Throughout the song, she tell us that her boyfriend don’t seems to like anything that she dose, she feels that he is always telling her that she is not good enough. She has told herself a few times to leave him, yet she just pulls herself away from him. She said that many wanted to be her boyfriend, but yet she doesn’t understand why he doesn’t seem to like her. At the end, of the song, she still stays with him, though questioned that if she is really that bad perhaps she should live by herself. Hope you will like the song.

13th Nov 2012 (最後一課 – Joey Yung)

The song that I chose for today is “最後一課” by Joey Yung.  This is one of my favourite songs from Joey and I also believe it is one of the best. This song is always undermined for some reason. The direct English translation of the title is “Last lesson”, I think it was written in memory of her singing teacher Roman Tam.

This song is very toughing, in the lyrics show us the love of a teacher. The song spoke from the student perspective. It start of telling us that why she need to speak of her memory as every time she him about him she will cry, but she know that he don’t like her to be sad. She wish that she could be as tough as him, can be so open-minded even facing dead. How that he is gone, she knows that now she is on her own and she have to act tough, but she is worry that she can’t face problems herself. She now also realised that even his dead is a lesson to her, telling her that life is short, but we should make the most out of it, just like he did. Hope you will enjoy the song.

12th Nov 2012 (櫻花樹下 – Hins Cheung)

The song that I chose for today is “櫻花樹下” by Hins Cheung.  This is one of my favourite songs by Hins. The direct English translation of the title is “Below the cherry tree”.

This song is about regret. In the lyrics it tell us that the protagonist used to have a very close friend (a girl). But back then they didn’t realise that it was love. Now when they have lost contact, the protagonist realised that it was love and he wanted to tell her how much he love her. One day he saw her, but she didn’t recognise him, it was then he realised that everything was too late. Hope you will like the song.

11th Nov 2012 (纏綿遊戲 – Edmond Leung)

The song that I chose for today is “纏綿遊戲” by Edmond Leung. This is one of Edmond’s classic song, it was quite famous when it came out back in the 90’s. The English translation of the title is “Lingering game”.

The lyrics of the song are about the protagonist got dump by his girlfriend. From the lyrics it seems that he was taking their relationship seriously, but the girl was taking it as a game, she never takes him seriously. So now the girl finally shows her real self, but the protagonist just can’t believe it. He can’t believe that he spent so much time with her and yet she was not even considering him as her boyfriend. Hope you will enjoy the song.

10th Nov 2012 (玉蝴蝶 – Nicholas Tse)

The song that I chose for today is “玉蝴蝶” by Nicholas Tse. This song came out in 2001. From memory this song was one of those used for promotion for the album, but it didn’t get very popular. The English translation of the title is “Jade butterfly”.

The lyrics of the song are quite complete, I am not sure whether I completely understand what it try to say, but I will share my thought. My understanding of the lyrics is that it talks about the protagonist making up difference names for his lover. But at the end he seems to conclude that no matter what he call her, she will still respond and she will still be who she is. I guess what it tries to say is that when you love someone, no matter what he/she is like you will still love them because you like their personality. Hope you will like the song.

9th Nov 2012 (再見...露絲瑪莉 – Denise Ho)

The song that I chose for today is “再見...露絲瑪莉” by Denise Ho. I should have talk about this song yesterday like I have promised but I forgot. Anyway, if you remember 2 days ago, when I talk about the song “露絲瑪莉”, I mentioned that there were a second part to that song, so today I will finish off the story by talking about the second part. The direct English translation of the title is “Goodbye…Rose Mary”.

The lyrics tell a story that follows on from “露絲瑪莉”. From “露絲瑪莉” we know that the protagonist were a pair of lesbian. In this song we found out that Rose and Mary are what they call each other, Rose is the protagonist and Mary is her girlfriend. In this song, Mary can’t bare how others see her, so Mary decided to leave Rose. So now when Mary is gone, Rose told us that Rose will disappear as well (as they are not their real name, but just a name that they use to call each other. So when Mary left her, the very existent of Rose will disappear as well, as no one else in the world will know that she was once been called Rose.) Although their relationship ends like this, but Rose said she will forever remember this and she will not anyone else call her Rose, so this name is specially reserved for Mary. Hope you will enjoy this song.
