30th Jun 2012 (好人 – Justin Lo)

Today’s song is “好人” by Justin Lo. Justin is one of my favourite singer, but sadly he had stop singing and moved to Begin as he can’t stand the media in Hong Kong. The English translation of the title of the song is “Good guy”. This was the first song that Justin sung when he first started his career. This song is quite hard to sing as it got a lot of high note. Justin carried it out very well, and this song helped him to claim his position in the Hong Kong music industry.

The lyrics are basically about a guy believed that his is very nice. He being nice to everyone and everyone treat him very well. Yet, no one seems to be interested in him to start a love relationship. He knows that everyone wanted to be friends with him, but don’t want to take the extra step to become his girlfriend. He believe that this is caused by the fact that he is just an average guy, there is nothing special about himself.

I guess most of us had feel the same way as the protagonist of the song sometime in our life, I certainly did. I guess to step out of that, we need to develop our self-esteem and trust in ourselves, then that way eventually we will know that we are special. Hope you will enjoy the song.

29th Jun 2012 (我們的主題曲 – Sammi Cheng)

The song that I chose for today is “我們的主題曲” by Sammi Cheng. This song came out in 1997, and it was one of the hit songs in that year. The English translation of the title is “Our theme song”. Sammi was very popular in the 90’s, to date she is still popular, but not as popular as before. Her love relationship with Andy Hui had officially gone public, so I have also linked to Andy Hui’s songs that I posted in this blog.

The lyrics is about the protagonist describing how every time she think of him, there are always music (I think she is referring to her heartbeat). She enjoy leaning onto his chest and listen to his heartbeat, as if his heartbeat was the rain in June. She believes that everything could change around them, but this song (referring to their heartbeat again) never will. Hope you will enjoy this song.

28th Jun 2012 (二人行一日後 – Andy Hui)

Today’s song is “二人行一日後” by Andy Hui. This song is rather old, from memory it came out at around 1998. The direct English translation of the title is “Two people travel together and one day later”. I am not sure why I am keep singing this song today, so I guess it just want me to write it on this blog :p

This is one of the typical Hong Kong love songs. The lyrics are about the protagonist expressing how happy he is to be with his girlfriend. In the lyrics, it mentioned even he is poor, but he is happy because his girlfriend is with him. You can feel the sweetness of the love from the lyrics, as it say they don’t care about the history of each other, all they care about his the time that they share together. Hope you will enjoy the song.

27th Jun 2012 (日與夜 – Jacky Cheung and Sandy Lam)

Today’s song is “日與夜” by Jacky Cheung and Sandy Lam. Both singers are top singers in Hong Kong. If you have read my post from yesterday, you would probably guess that this song and yesterday’s song are related. This song is the main theme song for the radio drama “日與夜” (in English, it means “Day and Night”). So simular to yesterday’s song, it talks about how two people love each other but they can’t be together.

The lyrics of the song is relate directly to the theme of the radio drama, which is about wrong timing. The song goes on about how the pace of the couple doesn’t match. It all started from the fact that their initial thought about their future were different, they started to move on in their own path. Although they managed to meet up multiple times, but as their goals are different, they can’t stay with each other. It shows how badly the couple wanted to stay together, they even wish that the time could freeze so that their moment could last forever.

Personally, I like this song more than the one from yesterday. So I hope that you will enjoy this song as much as I do.

26th Jun 2012 (Day & Night – Tanya Chua)

The song that I chose for today is “Day & Night” by Tanya Chua. Tanya is a singer from Singapore. “Day & Night” was the first song that I heard from her. It was one of the theme song from a radio drama in Hong Kong call “日與夜” (meaning “Day & Night”).

The radio drama was about a guy and a woman, they have meet up in their childhood and have feeling for each other, but for some reason they have to split up. Years passes by, the two meet again. The two still have feeling for each other, but the woman was already married. So the drama is about wrong timing. Similar to this song, the lyrics is expressing the protagonist’s love, how deeply she want to be with the person she love.  Hope you will enjoy the song

25th Jun 2012 (獅子山下 – Roman Tam)

Today’s song is “獅子山下” by Roman Tam. Roman was a very very famous singer in Hong Kong during the 70’s to 90’s, he is consider as one of the key figures in Hong Kong music. The English translation of the title of the song is “Under the Lion Rock”. “Lion Rock” (although it called as a rock in English, in Hong Kong we generally referred to it as mountain.) got its name from it shape, most people in Hong Kong consider this rock as a representation of Hong Kong. This song was very big back then, I guess the reason why it get so popular was the fact that most people think the lyrics truly reflect their feeling and thought as a Hong Konger. Even these days, in TV show, when they want to get some music to represent Hong Kong people’s spirit, this song would be their first choice. So in a way, it is quite an important song in Hong Kong history.

The lyrics are very simple. It is about how we should put down our difference and work together to build on our dreams. I guess the song came out at the right time. When it came out in 1979, people in Hong Kong we quite poor, everyone has to work very hard to earn their money for living. On top of that, each family usually have many kids (talking about like 6 or 7 kids), so money was a big issue for every family. So I guess people back then feels that this song gave them some kind of energy and motivation to keep moving. Hope you will enjoy this song and feel the spirit of the song.

24th Jun 2012 (夜機 – Priscilla Chan)

The song for today is “夜機” by Priscilla Chan. The newer generation probably think that this Priscilla Chan is the wife of Mark Zuckerberg (founder of Facebook). Wrong, it is a different Priscilla. This Priscilla that I am talking about was very very famous in the 80’s and 90’s in Hong Kong. This song that I am talking about today “夜機” (English translation is “Night flight”) was a very popular song back then. Priscilla is no longer famous now, I think she still sing, but mainly in mainland China. Her voice is also a lot deeper now and singing style is quite different as well. She know that her singing style had change as some of her friend asked her why the way she sing her famous songs are different to before. She explained in her concert that it is because of her experience, she see thing differently now, so she have a different interpretation of the song. But personally, I still like her previous style, and honestly her voice back then was gorgeous.

The song that I chose today have a simple theme, it is about a girl dump/escape from her boyfriend. The lyrics said that the girl got onto a late night flight to fly out of the country. During the flight, she thought of her boyfriend, saying good bye to him (in her heart) and wish that he could forgive her. She explain that the reason she leave him was because he treaded her badly, ignoring her, these make her very sad and leave her no choice but to leave him. Priscilla sung this song in such a way that it expresses the sadness and loneliness of the song, which I think it is why I like this song. Though, nowadays when she sing this song, her new way of expressing this song just doesn’t match the theme, and it irritate me. So I have just liked to the old version of the song, hope you will enjoy it.

23rd Jun 2012 (明知故犯 – Mavis Hee)

Today’s song is “明知故犯” by Mavis Hee. Since I talked about Mavis yesterday, I think I should talk about this song. The title “明知故犯” means knowing something is wrong, but still do it on purpose. This is the song that makes Mavis famous in Asia, so I guess I have to talk about this song when I talk about Mavis. Beside it is one of my favourite from Mavis.

The lyrics are exactly what you would expect from the title. It is about a girl knows that her boyfriend cheated on her, but she decided to live with it even though she is deeply hurt by that.

I guess what I like about this song is the melody. To be honest, I don’t think that Mavis sung this song well, because her pronunciation is off, which irritated me, but I like her expression in the song, make it quite unique. I hope you will enjoy this song.

22nd Jun 2012 (鐵窗 – Mavis Hee)

The song for today is “鐵窗” by Mavis Hee. Mavis was from Singapore, she was quite popular in the late 90’s. The direct translation of the title is “iron window”.

The lyrics is about a girl feeling after she broke up with her boyfriend. They have broken up for a long time now, and her hatred against him have long gone, but she still have feeling for him.  All there is for her now is just sadness. She once thought that they would be together forever, but she know that now she can only wish for that. Hope you will enjoy the song.

21st Jun 2012 (十字架 – Kay Tse)

The song that I chose for today is “十字架” by Kay Tse. Kay got a brilliant voice, it is very enjoyable even to just listen to her song without the background music. The direct translation of the title is “Cross” (as in the cross uses in religion, not the cross uses as in wrong. They got different name in Chinese). This song is one of my favourite by Kay.

This song is about a girl being deeply hurt by her ex-boyfriend. The story of the lyrics goes like this: When the protagonist was young, her mum told her that being truthful and treating other nicely, others will treat you nicely in return. But as she growth, she realised she got more wound by keeping these words. To took out her heart to her boyfriend, but in return she got hurt. She felt that it is like Jesus taking the cross on his back, she need to suffer to bring goods to the world, the more she give the worse she will get in return. So she decided to protect herself by “building a wall” to protect herself from harm, yet she know that this wall will also isolate her from the rest of the world, meaning that she will have to live the rest of her life alone.  She wishes that one day she would know what to do.

This story is quite true in our world today. I found that you can’t be too nice to others. When you be nice to others, a lot of them will take advantages of you. This is rather sad, because if it keeps going like this, there wouldn’t be many nice people left, as more and more realised that being to others means that being mean to yourself.

Hope you will enjoy the song.

20th Jun 2012 (寂寞夜晚 – Leslie Cheung/Eason Chan/ To You – Leslie Cheung)

The song for today is “寂寞夜晚” by Leslie Cheung. The direct English translation of the title is “Lonely night”. This is rather an old song, but surely it is one of my favourite of Leslie’s. This song had been covered by Eason Chan, my favourite male singer, in one of his concert and got some of the newer generation to listen to this song. Not many people know, there is also an English version of this song (also sung by Leslie) called “To You”.

The lyrics of the song is about how the protagonist feel when he broke up with his girlfriend. He wishes that they could still be together, but he knows that she had already changed her heart. He knows that he need to come back to the real life and forget about dreaming that they could be together again. The lyrics of the English version are slightly different, in that it mentioned that the protagonist had done something wrong to make his girlfriend leave him.

I have linked to both Leslie and Eason version below, and also the English version. Just like”最冷一天”, Leslie and Eason version is quite different. In Leslie version there are more sadness, you feel that he is hiding in his house, thinking and reviewing his relationship in his mind. While Eason version is more dramatic, it sounds like he is trying to release his sadness by speaking out loud. I hope you will enjoy all the different version of the song.

19th Jun 2012 (未知 – Joey Yung)

The song for today is “未知” by Joey Yung. The English translation of the title is “don’t know yet”. This song was one of the very first songs that Joey sung in her singing career. It is the official Chinese cover version of Jennifer Paige’s “Crush”.

If you have read my previous post, you would probably realise that I like Joey’s older songs rather than her new songs, yet this one is an exception. The reason is that this song was so out of her character back then, it didn’t match her image. Back then, her image was more like ‘the girl next door’ feel, so to me she feel more friendly and closer to the general public. These days, her image is more tough, which match this song quite well. Besides, I think the lyrics don’t quite match with the song. While the music song more tough, yet the lyrics sounds weaker, this mismatch just irritate me.

The lyrics is about a girl trying to figure out whether a boy that she like loves her. Quite different to the original version, which is more or less the other way around. I have linked to both the original and Joey’s version, see which one you would like more.

18th Jun 2012 (飛花 – Hacken Lee)

Today’s song is “飛花” by Hacken Lee. From memory, this is a song came out in around 2001. The direct translation of the title is “flying flower”, probably doesn’t mean much by the direction translation. In Chinese, this actually describe the time when flowers are falling off from trees (i.e. flowers ‘fly’ in the sky), usually also give a sense of romance.

The lyrics of this song is quite nice, it describe a couple went to Sapporo (the largest city in Hokkaido, Japan), and they describe the beautiful scenes that they see, alongside with their feeling, how much they want this moment to stay forever. Though this was only a memory, the couple at the end broke up.  Hope you will enjoy the song.

17th Jun 2012 (I’ll move on – Olivia Ong)

The song that I chose for today is “I’ll move on” by Olivia Ong. Olivia is one of my favourite singers and this is one of the songs that I really like from her.

I think this song got a Christian background, but despite that, it is still a song that get you keep going and keep moving on, and it is very positive. The lyrics are about how in life we faces many difficult, there are times that we want to give up on our dreams. But this song tell us that we shouldn’t, we know that we have been through something similar before, and we are so close to our dreams, we will be fool to give up on it now. We just need to take this step by step and eventually we will get to our goals.

Hope this song will enlighten you the same way it did to me. Enjoy.

Lyrics:
I’ll move on

This road that I'm taking twists and turns
My life my chance turning dreams into reality
Down this path faced with many things
Sometimes I feel like giving up and turn away

Can't seem to go on
And I've been thru' this before
Now where am I? Where do I stand?
A little lost here
But I'll remember
All those times you've bought me through
I'd be a fool to give up cos' the goal is near

I'll move on I'll go on
Lord I will take your hand
And you will guide me along
Survive thru' this storm
So I say come what may
I'll hold on to my hope
Yes I will walk down this road
And my passion drive will lead me on

Here I am Once again caught in the rain
Looking back I've come so far and I want to carry on

Take a step at a time it's alright
Even through this rain
I want to smile again

Don't hold back now
And I've been thru' this before
Now where am I? Where do I stand?
A little lost here
But I'll remember
All those times you've bought me thru'
I can feel the sun shining down on me

Here I am Here I am
Lord I will take your hand
And you will guide me along
Survive thru' this storm
So I say come what may
I'll hold on to my hope
Yes I will walk down this road
And my passion drive will lead me on

16th Jun 2012 (天氣的錯 – Ekin Cheng)

The song that I chose for today is “天氣的錯” by Ekin Cheng. The English translation of the song is “Weather’s fault?”. This is one of the songs that I like from Ekin.

Ito be honest, I am not quite sure whether I got the mean of the lyrics correctly, but my interpretation is that it is about the protagonist question the love from his girlfriend. He is asking whether she would leave everything behind to fall in love with him again. Hope you will enjoy this song.

15th Jun 2012 (失落園 – Grasshopper)

The song for today is “失落園” by Grasshopper. The title can be translated as “Lost paradise”. Grasshopper was very famous in the 80’s and 90’s, they are the first batch of students of Anita Mui (a big figure in Hong Kong).

This song came out in the late 90’s. From the lyrics, this song seems to be about the world can’t accept the love between the protagonist and his lover. In some way I think that this is about homosexual, as they get discrimination sometime, and the general public usually can’t quite accept this kind of love. In the lyrics it mentioned that the protagonist is suffering because a lot of people are looking down at them.

I personally quite like this song because Grasshopper really expressed the sadness in the song and make the whole song flow. Hope you will enjoy this song.
