25th Jun 2012 (獅子山下 – Roman Tam)

Today’s song is “獅子山下” by Roman Tam. Roman was a very very famous singer in Hong Kong during the 70’s to 90’s, he is consider as one of the key figures in Hong Kong music. The English translation of the title of the song is “Under the Lion Rock”. “Lion Rock” (although it called as a rock in English, in Hong Kong we generally referred to it as mountain.) got its name from it shape, most people in Hong Kong consider this rock as a representation of Hong Kong. This song was very big back then, I guess the reason why it get so popular was the fact that most people think the lyrics truly reflect their feeling and thought as a Hong Konger. Even these days, in TV show, when they want to get some music to represent Hong Kong people’s spirit, this song would be their first choice. So in a way, it is quite an important song in Hong Kong history.

The lyrics are very simple. It is about how we should put down our difference and work together to build on our dreams. I guess the song came out at the right time. When it came out in 1979, people in Hong Kong we quite poor, everyone has to work very hard to earn their money for living. On top of that, each family usually have many kids (talking about like 6 or 7 kids), so money was a big issue for every family. So I guess people back then feels that this song gave them some kind of energy and motivation to keep moving. Hope you will enjoy this song and feel the spirit of the song.
