The song that I chose for today is “打開天空” by Daniel Chan, Kelly Chan, Ray Chan and Joyce Yau. This song was from the 90’s, it was back at the time when it was ok for cigarette companies to advertise in Hong Kong. I remembered, each year, Marlboro (a cigarette brand) would host some advertising campaign which involve music. Those that sing the song for that year are either stars that were popular already or up and coming. For this song, we had Daniel and Kelly. Not much need to be said for Kelly as she is still quite popular these days. Daniel was very popular back then but he went down quite quickly (from memory it was due to some negative news with his manager). Ray and Joyce on the other hand, seem to disappear completely after this song. Back to the song, the direct English translation of the title is “Open the sky”.

The lyrics of the song are about being active and energetic (I guess mainly because the cigarette wanted a positive image to be related to their product). Daniel’s lines will be indicated by “D:”, Kelly’s by “K:”, Ray’s by “R:”, Joyce’s by “J:” and when they sing together “T:”. Note that a large section of the lyrics got repeated many times throughout the song, so I will not be repeating translating it in the following, I will only show it once when it first appeared.
