31st May 2012 (一個人飛 – Hacken Lee)

Today’s song is “一個人飛” by Hacken Lee. This song came up in my head today, not too sure why, I guess it just wanting me to post it up on here :p

The direct English translation of the title is “Fly alone”. I don’t know whether I interpreted the lyrics correctly, but I think this song is about a man who feels him and his girlfriend is far apart (mentally) and he wanting to breakup. In a way, he wanted to breakup because he wanted to understand him more, he reckons that it is possible that one day they might fall in love again. Hope you will enjoy the song.

30th May 2012 (Wish you were here – Lady Gaga)

The song for today is “Wish you were here” by Lady Gaga. Similar to other Lady Gaga songs that I have posted before, this is a slow pace song (as I am not too into her dance songs). The lyrics is quite simple, it is about how the protagonist is lost and how she misses her important one. Hope you will enjoy the song for today.

29th May 2012 (吃鯨魚的人 – Juno Mak)

Today’s song is “吃鯨魚的人” by Juno Mak. Juno is not a popular singer, in fact, quite a lot of people dislike him because when he first started his singing career, the media had found out that his dad pay people to pretend to be his fans. Because of that incident, he loses his credibility. To certain degree, I feel sorry for him, because people no longer truly listen to his song, a lot of people change channel or station when his song came up.

I don’t feel negative about Juno, but personally, his songs are not the type that I like except a few, and today’s song is one of those. The direct translation of the title is “The person who eat whale”. I like this song because it talks about how us human being eat whale through whales’ point of view. It is a very interesting song because it talks about all the wrong things that we do to whales and how we treated the whale badly, yet throughout the song, the whale seems to feel that it is a normal thing. For example, it said that “why we are so close to extinction but you still come and hunt us down. Why are you so crude, you are always just looking for the next sacrificial offering just to give you the nutrition that you need.” But it also answers its own question “I guess you are doing this because you are just mortal, and hunting is just your survival instinct.” These lines really bring out the sadness, and to a certain extent, it shows us how we are being so selfish that we wanted to control everything around us with considering others that share this planet with us.

Hope you will enjoy the song.

28th May 2012 (小玩意 – Cass Pang)

The song for today is “小玩意” by Cass Phang. Cass was a famous singer in the 90’s, but she quit her career in 1998 because of her marriage.

This song is about marriage. It describes the feeling of a female when her boyfriend proposes to her and put a ring to her fourth finger. This is a perfect wedding song. Recently, it became a hit again, as Cass sung this song in Wyman Wong’s concert (Wyman is the person who wrote the lyrics for this song). Hope you will enjoy this song.

27th May 2012 (最悲哀的事 – Edmond Leung)

Today’s song is “最悲哀的事” by Edmond Leung. The direct English translation of the title is “The saddest thing”. Not too sure why this song wasn’t a big hit, as it really got all the potential to become a very popular song.

This song is about a man that really loves a friend of his. He is helping her to organise her wedding, and during this process he wonder why he couldn’t be the groom. In the later section of the song, it talks about that they end up having an affair before the wedding, he didn’t wanted the night to end, but he knows that after that night, they would really be over as she will have to get married with something else.

It is rather a sad story, people who love each other can’t end up together. Although it didn’t mentioned in the lyrics, but I am guessing that the girl have to married with his husband because of her family. If she really love them both, then I think one day her marriage will be broken apart. Anyway, I have paste a link to the song as usual, hope you will enjoy it.

26th May 2012 (Reality – Richard Sanderson)

Today’s song is “Reality” by Richard Sanderson. This is quite a famous love song, especially in Europe. It is a song from a French movie “La Boum”. My understanding of the lyrics is that it is about falling in love for the first time, as the protagonist seems to dream a lot about his love. Hope you will enjoy the song for today.

25th May 2012 (Brown Eyes – Lady Gaga)

Today’s song is “Brown Eyes” by Lady Gaga. This is not the usual Lady Gaga dance songs. Personally, I am not too into Lady Gaga, as I think most of her songs sound quite simular, they are all fast pace and it is not the type that I enjoy too much (Still, I listen to some of them, like “Paparazzi”, the first song that I heard about Lady Gaga, and it was a song that I really like.) To certain extent, I like the slower pace songs from Lady Gaga, like “Second Time Around” that I have talked about a while ago.

My interpretation of the lyrics is that it is about a girl who is breaking up with her boyfriend. Although, it hurt her, but she have realised over the time that her boyfriend is still thinking about his ex-girlfriend. So she decided to let him go.  Hope you will enjoy the song.

24th May 2012 (Can't Buy Me Love – The Bealtes/行快 d 啦 – 大AL (張武孝))

Today’s song is “Can't Buy Me Love” by The Bealtes. I remember when I was a kid, there is a Chinese version. I am not sure whether it was an official cover version (most probably not back in those times). In some way I think the Chinese version is a bit disrespectful to the original as it didn’t bring out the message of the original song (which is money can’t buy love). But then, it’s lyrics is so raw that it really suit the people in Hong Kong back at those times, and in a way, it lets more people to know the songs. Anyway, I have linked to both versions, you can decided which one you like better.

By the way, the direct English translation of the title is “Walk faster”, which, really, have nothing to do with the lyrics of the original.

23rd May 2012 (What I Miss About You – Katie Melua)

Today’s song is “What I Miss About You” by Katie Melua.

What I like about this song is the way that it tells it story. At the beginning, the lyrics talks about a girl miss her boyfriend through the things that they have done when they were together. Then later on, we found out that her boyfriend lied to her, he turns his light off when she knew that he is at home, indicating that he have got a new girlfriend. At that point she realised that he is a player, she believe that he is using the same old trick on his new girlfriend. The song is rather sad, as Katie sung this song without much emotion, it defiantly doesn’t sound anger, so it gives me the impression that the protagonist is sad and lost. Hope you will enjoy the song.

22nd May 2012 (出埃及記 – Miriam Yeung)

The song that I chose for today is “出埃及記” by Miriam Yeung. Miriam is one of the top pop singer currently in Hong Kong. Personally, I don’t like her new songs too much, but I lover the songs that she sung when she first started her career. Songs came out at those time have a different feeling to those that she sing these days. They tents to be less pop and her voice was quite fresh, feel a bit like Indie, these days even when she sung these song, they don’t sound the same.

出埃及記” is a song that came out during that time, it wasn’t a very popular song, but it is surely one of my favourite from Miriam. The English translation is “Exodus” (for those that don’t know, Exodus is a book in the Old Testament of the Bible.) My interpretation of the lyrics is that it talks about a girl with a broken heart because she had broken up with her boyfriend. She is basically lost and confuses and wish that they were not separated, but she know that it would require more than a miracle to restore their relationship. There are other interpretations, some that I read on the internet reckon that the song is about getting out from the lowest point in our life (to certain extent, it is the same interpretation as mine, just that the meaning broader).

I really like the way Miriam voice in this song, her voice make it sounds like it is a dream, lost and confuse, a very good match to the lyrics. Anyway, hope you will love this song as much as I do.

21st May 2012 (Staying Alive – Bee Gees)

Today’s song is “Staying Alive” by Bee Gees. I have chosen this song because I heard in the news that Robin Gibb had just passed away. So in memory of Robin Gibb, I have chosen one of Bee Gees famous songs “Staying Alive”. R.I.P. Robin Gibb.

This song made for the movie “Saturday Night Fever”, a movie about disco. Personally, I haven’t seen the movie, but I have definitely heard of this song before.  I am not too sure what exactly the lyrics is referring to, but my interpretation is that it is about our life in the city, how everyone live in the city is like a living dead, life is going nowhere, we don’t know what we are doing, but yet everyone is carrying  the same routine day by day. Things happen very quickly in the city, and that it could also be forgotten very quickly. So I think the lyrics are referring to how we live our life in a big city. Hope you will enjoy the song.

20th May 2012 (我願意 – Olivia Ong/Faye Wong)

The song of the day is “我願意” by Olivia Ong. The English translation of the title is “I Do”. The original version was sung by Faye Wong. I personally like Olivia’s version better, probably because her version is more fresh and modern. Beside I think I had listened to Faye’s version too many time, I have already got used to her way of expressing this song.

In simple words, this song is about a girl expressing her love. She is thinking of her boyfriend and she is willing to do anything for him and wanting to spend all her time with him. I guess it is a good wedding song. The two versions sounds very different, in fact, it is like two different types of girl expressing their love. Olivia’s version sound like the girl cute and energetic, more like a modern types of girl. On the other hand, Faye’s version sound like from a more elegant girl that are more quite in nature, a girl that is less energetic and thinks a lot. So I guess it depends on the type of girl that you like you will probably feel one version is better than the other. I have linked to both versions below, hope you will enjoy them both.

19th May 2012 (Goodbye - Janice Vidal/Air Supply)

Today’s song is “Goodbye” by Janice Vidal. Yes, stil on Janice, as I am still excited the fact that she will be having a concert in July!!

This is an English song, the original version was sung by Air Supply. I like both versions, as they sound quite different. In Janice version, you can feel that there is more sadness in the song, while in Air Supply version sounds tougher.

The song is about how the protagonist feels that his girlfriend is living in pain. My interpretation is that the protagonist has probably done something wrong, and he knows that his girlfriend knows about it. However, the girlfriend wanted to stay with him, so she tried hard to act normal. The protagonist can feel her pain and realised that he is making her suffer. Although, they can live on like this but the protagonist don’t want to hold her back as he reckon that she deserve a lot more than what he can offer. So even though it would be would be painful for them both, he decided to let her go to give her freedom, even in the case that he have to act as the mean one. This is a beautiful tune, and both singer song the song well with their unique feeling.  Hope you will enjoy them both.

18th May 2012 (年少無知 – Bowie Lam, Moses Chan and Kenny Wong)

Today’s song is “年少無知” by Bowie Lam, Moses Chan and Kenny Wong. The three of them hardly produce any songs together because they are not officially singer, but they are actor. This song is a theme song of a TV drama call “天與地” (the official English title is “When Heaven Burns”). The drama turned out to be very successful. Different to the usual TV drama from the TV company (TVB), this drama got a lot of controversial ideas in it. The drama revolve around 4 boys went to a snow mountain, they end up stuck there due to snow storm, they were lost and have not food. One of they were on the verge of dying due to the cold. As they lack of food, the other 3 decided to kill the dying and eat his meat to survive. The story revolves on how this incident has change the life of this 3 men and they guilt they carry with them for the rest of their life.

Back to the song, the direct English translation of the song is “Ignorance”. It basically talks about when we were young, we have all kinds of hope and we thought that we could change the world, but when we get old we realised that it is not possible. For example in the first part, it mention that when we were young we would fight for our freedom and right and thought that it would make a different, but when we got old, we realised that everything need to be compromised. In the second paragraph, it talks about when we were young, although we were poor, but we were very happy. Something as little as 1 dollar is enough to make us happy. Now we have got wealth, we lost our health and we always think about what we can get in return.  The line that I really like in the lyrics is “if we can chose our destiny, we would be a lot more confident on making our choice at the cross junction of our life journey. If we can be truthful to others, the values that we believe in wouldn’t be lost through time.” This song has inspired me a bit about life. When I was sad and listened to this song it makes me cried. It is very touching, and it makes me reflect on my life and think about all the stuff that I was forced to do due to my surrounding environment. Hope you will like this song as well.

17th May 2012 (離家出走 – Janice Vidal)

Today’s song is “離家出走” by Janice Vidal. Janice is going to have a concert in Hong Kong in July. I am very excited about that even though I wouldn’t be able to go, because it has been long since Janice got publicity. I personally reckon that she make the wrong choice for choosing her current manager and music producing company. Janice got such a great and special voice, her singing technique is very mature as well, so I believe that she would be a bright star and be very successful on her musical journey. Yet, I think her current manager and music company had make so many enemies and wrong decisions that cause Janice to be not as popular as she should be. So I really hope that she can quickly finish off her current contract and move on with a new manager to be successful.

Anyway, back to the song. The direct translation of the title is "Run away from home". I love the tuneof the song, and together with Janice voice, it makes it quite relaxing to listening to this song. As for the lyrics, this song is about a girl running away from home to travel with her boyfriend. Even though she think that this might be a wrong thing to do and her family is not happy about it, but the girl believe that it is still worth it, as she know that she wouldn’t regret in the future. Hope you will enjoy Janice voice as much as I do.

16th May 2012 (Do you know where you're going to – Janice Vidal/Diana Ross)

Today’s song is “Do you know where you going to” and the version that I chose is by Janice Vidal. Many singers have sung this song. The original was sung by Thelma Houston in 1973. In 1976, Diana Ross sung this song as the theme song of the movie “Mahogany” and got this song popular. Janice’s version came out in around 2006.

Personally, I preferred Janice’s version, as I think the way that she sang the song somewhat matches the song. She sung it in a way that makes it sounds like a fantasy. In the first section, she sounds a bit naive, like a little girl wondering about her future. But in the second part, she sounds more like she is questioning herself about life, more in a review sense. Other singers tent to sing this song in a more powerful way, they tents to show their techniques well, but that doesn’t quite match with the song.

The lyrics are about life. It tells us in our life journey, we have lots of dreams. But in many of this slip pass us because we catch the chance when it comes by. Why it takes until now that we realised chances are not given for granted? I really think that this is a good song to make us think about our life, to think about what we want to get out of our life and what we wish to do with our life. If you are lost and not sure what to do, I hope by listening to this song you will get the answers. Hope you will enjoy the song.
Do you know where you're going to – Janice Vidal

Here is the version by Diana Ross, the song sound a bit different, as she sung it in a different way. This one sound more like we are reviewing our life, so it is somewhat a closer match to the lyrics.

15th May 2012 (到此為止 – Shiga Lin)

Today’s song is “到此為止” by Shiga Lin. This song is quite new and Shiga Lin is also a relative new singer. It is a bit hard to give the meaning of the song title this time. By direct translation to English, it means “To date”, but this phase could also mean “an action should stop now”, in the context of the song, it is a bit of both.

I only heard this song on YouTube recently and I love it. These days, I found it hard to keep looping a new song, but this one is surely an exception. Shiga got a nice voice and her voice is a good match to these types of songs. The lyrics are also able to paint a good picture in my head, so I guess that’s why I like it so much.

In this song, the lyrics is about a girl is thinking about her ex-boyfriend. Her ex-boyfriend have already got a new girlfriend and have moved on, but she is still thinking back about the time that they spent together. She said that she don’t have the courage to talk to him about their past and she don’t have courage to start a new relationship. To date, the ex-boyfriend had already forgotten all the stuff that they did together, but she still remembers it very clearly. Even though she found it hard to forget about him, she knows that she will need to forget all about him to start a new life.

14th May 2012 (紙婚 – Hacken Lee)

Today’s song is “紙婚” by Hacken Lee. The direct English translation of the song title is “paper marriage”. Hacken’s singer career was quite dramatic. He was quite popular when he first came out because people found that he sung very similar to a famous singer Alan Tam (Alan is Hacken’s childhood idol, the two of them later became friends). But for some reason, he get less and less popular and eventually wouldn’t able to produce any songs as little of his albums were sold. He then moved into TV, and start acting in dramas and host for TV shows. Those shows did make him a bit more famous, but still not enough. Until in around 2004, Alan decided to hold a concert with Hacken (in hope to boost Hacken’s popularity). The concert was a great success and Hacken become very popular. Still until today, Hacken maintain as a tier one singer in Hong Kong.

This song that I chose today came out in 2007. This song is about marriage. It talks about a couple who had married and now found that they don’t quite love each other. They still live together and live their life as normal, but they feel that they are only doing this because they have signed the marriage certificate. This is to bring out the message that signing the marriage certificate doesn’t mean that your marriage is securer, if we love each other, even if we don’t sign the marriage certificate, our love will still be forever. Hope you will love this song.

13th May 2012 (紅豆/償還 – Faye Wong)

Today’s song is “紅豆” by Faye Wong. Faye is a very famous Chinese singer, she have won lots of awards. These days she is half retired, only occasionally she sing a new song or have a concert somewhere.

The English translation of the title is “Red Bean”. This is one of the songs that I really like (especially the fact that it is in mandarin). As I have a Cantonese background, if it is a Chinese song, I usually prefer the Cantonese version rather than the mandarin version. But this song is an exception. This song also got a Cantonese version call “償還” meaning “Redemption”, but I really think that Faye sounds better in the mandarin version. The two versions got different lyrics (as they are really two languages, so pronunciation would be different for the same words. So different lyrics are needed to match the melody). “紅豆” is about a girl realised that love always have an end, she know that she and her boyfriend will breakup someday, but she still wishes that she could treat their love as if it could last forever. In “償還”, the girl have already broken up with her boyfriend, but realised that there had been lots of thing that they still have done together, so she don’t want to let go and move on until she have done all these things.

I have linked to both of these songs, so you can listen to them both and see which one you like more. Hope you will enjoy them.

12th May 2012 (夕陽之歌 – Anita Mui/夕焼けの歌 – Kohji Makaino)

Today’s song is “夕陽之歌” by Anita Mui. This can be seen as a continuation of yesterday’s song. The English translation of the title is “The song of sunset”.

This song and yesterday’s song got the same melody. They are both cover song of a Japanese singer Kohji Makaino’s (近藤真彥) “夕焼けの歌” (From translation, the title is pretty much the same as Anita’s “夕陽之歌”.) “夕陽之歌” talks more about life. It talks about how we have gone through a lot in our life, there had been good and bad, and we might have missed a few chances or made the wrong decisions. But throughout the song there is a sense of loneliness. Different to yesterday’s “千千闕歌”, “千千闕歌” talks about sadness from separation.

From what I know about the original song, “夕陽之歌” lyrics are also a closer match to the original. Anyways, I personally like Priscilla’s “千千闕歌” more than Anita’s “夕陽之歌”. So if you missed yesterday’s song, you can click on the link below.

I have linked both ”夕陽之歌” and the original “夕焼けの歌” below, hope you will enjoy them
