2nd Apr 2013 (Monica – Leslie Cheung/モニカ – Kikkawa Koji (吉川晃司))

The song that I chose for today is “Monica” by Leslie Cheung. Yesterday was Leslie’s 10th death anniversary. To memories him, I have chosen one of Leslie’s songs that I think it could partly represent Leslie. This song came out in 1984, it was a big hit back then, a very energetic song. Note that like many other songs in the 80’s, this one is also a Chinese cover version of a Japanese song. The original is call “モニカ” sung by Kikkawa Koji (吉川晃司).

The lyrics of the song are rather simple; it is about the protagonist thanks her ex-girlfriend for leaving him. It start off telling us that before they broke up, his ex-girlfriend gave him everything. But back then, he didn’t treasure it and look down at her. Now that she had left him, he felt guilt about it. He now realises that no one could replace her place in his heart and he started to see how bad as a person he was. It is too late now to turn back as she had already found her love one. So he thanks her for what she did, and thanks her for changing him as he now see the things differently. Now he can only keep his love to her in his heart. Hope you will like the song. I have also linked the original Japanese version below.
