The
song that I chose for today is “傾城” by Mavis Hee. This is one of Mavis’s
classic and it is also one of my all-time favourites. It is a bit difficult to
translate the title into English as there isn’t a direct equivalent terms. The
closest that I can translate (well actually suggested by Google translate) is “Allure”.
The phase “傾城”, I takes it as the shorten form of “傾國傾城”
means that something (typically referring to beauty) worth as much as a city.
From the lyrics, this seems to be the correct meaning of the phase. (The phase “傾城”
could also mean “every effort from the city”, but that doesn’t seem to be the
correct definition here).
The
lyrics of the song are about love. It begins with the protagonist saying that
she and her boyfriend are no longer close and they are about to breakup. She
wanted him to give her the sweetest words, lies on their last night together. In
case he runs out of words, he can kiss her to the coolest night. Such a busy
city, with pretty light, but now their relationship comes to an end. Her red
eyes are gazing at this lonely city. She feels that the whole city is becoming
so beautiful just to be the background of her breakup with her boyfriend.
Legends had it that infatuation tears will win the city back. But now the
lights are off and the world feels quiet. Hope you will like the song.
