8th Aug 2012 (尖沙咀Susie – Sam Hui)

The song that I chose for today is “尖沙咀Susie” by Sam Hui. Sam can be seen as the king of pop in Hong Kong. He was pretty much the first person that write modern Cantonese song (or Cantonese pop) in Hong Kong that got very popular. Before his time, Cantonese pop was seen as something for the lower class, he was the person that change this view and subsequently created the burst of Cantonese pop in the 80’s and 90’s. The direct English translation of the title is “Tsim Sha Tsui’s Susie”. Tsim Sha Tsui is a place in Hong Kong.

I remember when I was a kid I used to listen to this song a lot. Back then I have no clue what’s the lyrics was about. But I guess it is the nature of Sam’s songs, they are so easy to remember (probably they are quite repetitive in terms of lyrics or tempo). The lyrics of this song are about a girl call Susie. This song is expressed through a third person view. In the lyrics, it shows that this girl is rich, she got everything that she wants and she is also good looking and very bossy. She spent most of her time on dressing up herself.  At the very end of the song, the person telling the story said that this Susie should be very careful, once she gets old, she will lost everything that she got now. This is surely a fun song to listen to, hope you will enjoy it.

Note: The lady acting as Susie in the video is Teresa Carpio, she is also a famous singer in the 80’s and 90’s.
