The song that I chose for today is “大地” by Beyond. Beyond is a very famous band in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, the lead vocalist (Wong Ka Kui) falls of the stage in the 1993 during his performance in Japan and was badly injured. He passed away a few days after that. As Ka Kui wasn’t just the leader of the band, he was also the key song writer of the band, losing him make the band lost its uniqueness and direction. Eventually they fade out of the Hong Kong music industry. Though individual member started their own music career and some are quite successful. Although the band ended like that, their songs remain in many people heart. Ka Kui was also seen as a freedom fighter, many of his songs reflect the situation of Hong Kong or the world. He was truly a start that uses his publicity to help out the one in need. So even to date, many of the Beyond’s songs are played during important occasion.  The direct English translation of the song title is “Main land”.

The lyrics of this song have a few meaning. If you just read the lyrics word by word, it is a song that talks about the relationship between father and son. However, if you go one layer deeper, this song is actually using the relationship of father and son to describe the relationship between Mainland China and Hong Kong. In the lyrics, talks about the son don’t know how to react to his father smile. He even found it a bit sad when he saw his dad got a smile on his face. This is a very powerful song, I hope you will enjoy it.
