The song that I chose for today is “漫步人生路” by Teresa Teng. This is one of Teresa’s iconic songs. The original Japanese version was sung by Nakajima Miyuki (who also wrote the melody) and it was call “ひとり上手”. The direct English translation of the title is “Stroll the road of life”.

The lyrics of the song are about life. It said that when the protagonist is with her love one, she never feels tired and they stroll through every stage of their life. They have reached a climax but at the same time they see another climax that they could reach, so there is always a dream that they try to turn into reality. The road of life could be bumpy, but they are not scared about it. They wish their life could be a mix of happiness and sadness. There is no need to worry about our future, instead we should enjoy what’s surrounding us. No matter it is sad or happy, every day we should found something new in our life. So let the wind blow and give us challenges as these will not stop us from moving forward. Hope you will like the song. I have linked both Theresa’s version and the original Japanese below.

The song that I chose for today is “最愛是誰” by George Lam. This is a theme song from a movie. The direct English translation of the title is “Who I love most”.

The lyrics of the song are about the protagonist trying to work out who is the person he love the most. He said that he was searching for his partner; he found her and wishes to be together forever. But time past by and now he regrets. He left his wife because he believes he found the girl that he love. Now his heart is no longer with her but he dreamed about his ex-wife. He wonder why he wanted to follow the one that he said good bye to but the one that he can spent his life with doesn’t bring him any excitement. He wanted to know how he could keep going and who is actually the person that he loves. Hope you will like the song.

The song that I chose for today is “灰色” by Sandy Lam. This is one of Sandy classic, the song came out in 1987. The direct English translation of the title is “Grey”.

The lyrics of the song are about love. The protagonist found out that her boyfriend was dating another girl. She no longer wanted to pretend that she didn’t know about it. There is no point of dragging this on as she doesn’t want to keep loving this love liar. At the same time, she still thinks of him as he is the first one that gives her the feeling of love. His involvement in her life had made her life a lot more colourful. But now there is only grey in her cold heart. Hope you will like the song.

27th Apr 2013 (面具 – Ivana Wong)

The song that I chose for today is “面具” by Ivana Wong. This is one of my favourite from Ivana. I chose this song today purely because of the title. The direct English translation of the title is “Mask”. It gets me thinking why everyone in the world has to put on a mask when we meet with other. I hate it when I see myself trying to act nice to someone that I truly hate. So many times we misunderstand each other because we don’t understand the reason behind their decision, so why should we hide? If we are open about it, then we could better understand each other and probably be more forgivable. But I guess it is not possible, as we are all selfish, we always wanted more for ourselves than others.

The lyrics of the song got are somewhat related to my thought above. The song is about love. It is basically about the relationship between the protagonist and her boyfriend. She feels that they are not as close to each other as they were, they don’t talk to each other as much. But both of they don’t have to courage to break up as they don’t want to regret. So they put up a mask, or a fake face, to cover up their real emotion. Hope you will like the song.

The song that I chose for today is “憑著愛” by Julie Su. Julie was a singer from Taiwan. I had heard of this song many time, but it was only yesterday I realised that Julie was the singer, before that I never really know who sang the song. The direct English translation of the title is “With love”. The lyrics of this song are a bit hard to translate, but I will try my best to translate it.

The lyrics of the song are about the protagonist talking about her love life. She said that she had met many people in her life, some had given her pain and some had been crazy about her. But she believes that one day she would be able to found the best. With love, she knows that she will be able to find an exit. If they are finally together, even their love doesn’t last long, there wouldn’t be any worry in her life anymore (as she had at least had it once). We might have high and low in our life, going through these we realised that being happy and simple is the best. Love is beautiful, and even crying is good. We should have the courage to face our fear. Hope you will like the song.

The song that I chose for today is “只怕不再遇上” by Leslie Cheung and Elisa Chan. From memory this song was very popular, and it is one of the classic these days. The direct English translation of the title is “worry that we will not meet again”.

The lyrics of the song are about love. The male protagonist decided to break up with the female protagonist. He is sorry that he do this to her. She accepted it, but she said that she still love him. She wishes to be in love with him again. He said that he understand is a pain to her, but he wishes that she could understand his pain as well. She said if they do meet again, she will still love him. So this is a song about a couple who don't wanted to be separated, but for some reason they have to be apart. Hope you will like the song.

The song that I pick for today is “後備” by Sita Chan. The music video of this song was just posted online today and this is Sita’s last music video. The direct English translation of the title is “Backup”.

The lyrics of this song are about love. The protagonist had fallen in love with a guy who has a girlfriend. Every time she meets him, she feels guilty. She tried to avoid him, but yet she can’t control herself. She said that he treats her like rubbish, but for some reason, she just listens to his order. She wishes that she could be the one and only one. She is hurt and disappointed. He had once promised her that if he and his girlfriend was finish, she will be his only one. That’s why she was happy to be a backup. But now, he announced in a church that his girlfriend will be the person that he spent the rest of his life with. She look into a mirror, feels that she is nothing and she hate herself so much. Hope you will like the song.

The song that I chose for today is “仍能情深愛上” by Ekin Cheng. I was listening to an old radio drama today and I heard this song in the radio drama. I think I heard this song before as the melody is quite familiar, but I remember nothing about the lyrics. The direct English translation of the title is “Still can fall in love deeply”.

The lyrics of the song are bout the protagonist falling in love. At the beginning, the protagonist said wonder why he felt so lost and at the same time a bit panic. Slowly, he realised that it was her who changes him. It was her that makes him fall in love again. He felt that his fire of love has been reignited. Falling in love with her had given him new direction in life. Hope you will enjoy the song.

22nd Apr 2013 (獨立宣言 – William So)

The song that I chose for today is “獨立宣言” by William So. William had been singing for many years. Not sure whether he is unlucky or just that his songs never catch the heart of the majority, he was never really shining bright. He is well recognised for his singing skill, but it seems hard for him to hold his fame for a long time. Two years ago, he had a very popular song “那誰”. Everything was going well for him, but since then I haven’t really heard about him apart from the Big4 concert (William is part of Big4). If he produced songs more frequently, I guess he would have been very popular by now. Back to the song, the direct English translation of the title is “Independent speech”.

The lyrics of the song are about love. At the beginning of the song, the protagonist said that he is used to hugging with his girlfriend and seems to get used to being loved by her. Although he said that he should felt happy about this as he could be lucky to find someone that he love, he started to worry that her love will block him from the road of success in his job. He felt that her love had made him to forget about chasing after his dreams. So he tried to take one step from their relationship, so that they don’t rely on each other so much. Perhaps meeting once a while would be the way to keep their love going. HE said that there is no need for them to love each other until they die and there are other things apart from love. Perhaps they should individually enjoyed their life and meet up once a while to catch-up. So perhaps we should let go. Hope you will enjoy the song.

21st Apr 2013 (天又藍 - Shine)

The song that I chose for today is “天又藍” by Shine. Shine was never really popular. At one point it looked like there were on top of everything, but slowly they fade away. Until recently, they stared in Wyman’s concert and many people seem to really enjoy their part. “天又藍” is one of their classic. The direct English translation of the title is “Sky is blue again”.

The lyrics of the song are about not giving up hope. It started off telling us that there had been many things that got the protagonist sad, like losing a football match. But his will was not stopped. He knows that he will get over it someday. Even though at one point it seems to hurt so much, but when we have grown up, the pain seems to disappear. Hope you will like the song.

The song that I chose for today is “雨季不再來” by Vivian Lai. I am not really a Vivian’s fans, but I quite like her songs. A few years ago, I search on internet for Priscilla Chan’s songs (and eventually now trying to buy back all her albums, still got a few missing….) In the process of that I heard some songs sung by Vivian Lai. Vivian’s voice actually sounds so much like Priscilla back in the 90’s (these days Priscilla’s voice is a lot deeper). However, Vivian had retired since she was married, so she hardly sings these days (at least not publicly). The direct English translation of the title is “Rain season will never come again”.

The lyrics of this song are about love. It tells us that the protagonist was standing next an open window. It was raining outside and so the rain was coming through the open window. When the rain got onto her, she felt it as if it was her ex-boyfriend giving her a hug. When it hit her face, she felt that the rain was trying to kiss her for him. Although he has left her for another person, she still loves him so deeply. This place that they used to hang out has got nothing left apart from disappointment. The rain had got her all wet, she wonder it is her being stupid to wet herself, or is it that he was trying to get inside her body through the rain. Hope you will enjoy the song.

The song that I chose for today is “金字塔” by Takki Wong. I really like Takki’s songs, but it seems that the public are not too interested in her. She seldomly make any new songs. This song is one of my favourite from Takki. The direct English translation of the title is “Pyramid”.

The lyrics of the song are about love. It starts with the protagonist saying that she was walking in a desert and she seems to be attracted by the historical site. (What I think the lyrics try to say is that the protagonist is in a love desert. She saw this man and she is attracted to him.) She knows that this man is not for her, but she decided to jump into the maze. The journey is full of thorns. By the time she wanted to turn back, her entrance was already locked up. So she knows that she will only love him in her life even though he doesn’t love her in return. She felt lonely, and time slowly ticked away. She felt that she is trapped and can’t break through. Now that she had gone through so much with him and he finally loves her back. Hope you will like the song.

The song that I chose for today is “Sing along song” by Khalil Fong. I personally don’t listen to Khalil’s song too much, as most of them are in mandarin. This song was one of the few that caught my ears, I just like the melody of this song.

The lyrics of the song are very simple. It is about the protagonist expressing his love to a girl that he like. It start off saying that he wrote this song for her. This song is short because he wrote it when he was thinking about her. She can sing along if she like as it is a song for her. He wanted to share his happiness with her and she means a lot more than she ever thought she does. Hope you will like the song.

17th Apr 2013 (忘川/beLIEve – Sita Chan)

The song that I chose for today is “忘川” by Sita Chan. Sita only become a singer in 2011. She was one of the few emerging singers that caught my ears. Unfortunately, she passed away in a car accident early today. So to memorise her, I have chosen my favourite song that sung by her. The direct English translation of the title is “Lethe”. Lethe is one of the river of Hades in the Greek mythology, but a similar river also exist in the Chinese mythology (that why I have chosen this name for the translation). In the Chinese mythology, this river in the dead world serves the same purpose as Lethe. It is a river that must travel to the other side of the river in order to reincarnate. On the bridge that crosses the river stand an old lady. When someone crosses the bridge, the old lady will hand the person a bowl of soup and after drinking this soup, the person will forget about their present life and ready to move onto their next life.

The lyrics of the song are about love. It is about the protagonist thinking about her ex-boyfriend, but she knows that he have already got a new girlfriend. He wishes her could be happy, and he believe that if she smile everyday then a new relationship will arrive at her doorstep. But she just can’t stoping about him. Now that he has got his love one, she feels that she is nobody. She felt that as if all her memories from the past have been washed away by a river. She sometime thinks that she is a bird and wanted to fly to him, but she feel this bird would fall into a river. At the end, she thanks her ex-boyfriend, she will smile every day and wish that a new relationship would arrive. She travelled around, many fun things had happened and bumped into a few interesting people. All her old memories had washed away and she will never be able to find it again. These memories are like a distant fog and she could feel that she will found her new relationship soon. Hope you will enjoy the song. The song that I chose for today is “開不了心” by Eason Chan. This song is around 6 years old. Someone posted this song on Facebook, I saw the title and felt that it matches my feeling. I am not sure why I felt unhappy today, perhaps it is the incident in Boston or it is just my periodic depression that I seems to experience once a while when I think too much about my study. The direct English translation of the title is “Can’t get happy”.

The lyrics of the song are about sadness. It start off saying that the protagonist felt sick of keep going in his life, the people around him is so worry about him that they started to encourage him blindly. The protagonist said that he don’t want his friends to force him to smile when he is down. It felt like that his friends think that he will commit suicide when he is sad. So if we are unhappy, then just let it be, there is no need to encourage us. All we should do is to follow our heart to release our emotion. There is no need to hide from our emotion, so don’t force yourself to find happiness when you are sad. Once we have digested the sadness, we will be up and running again. When we think about what have wars done to our world, how could we not feel sad, but telling us that some places were lucky enough to not suffer from salvation would not make us happy instantly. We go to see doctor when we are unhappy and take medicine until we forgot hatred, but that would be sad to force ourselves to laugh without emotion. So unhappy perhaps is not a bad thing, as we need to search for reasons to be happy. Once we have overcome our difficulties, when we will be reborn. Hope you will enjoy the song.

The song that I chose for today is “時間人物地點” by Ronald Cheng. Ronald is one of my favourite singers. These days he hardly sing, but many of his old songs are classic. The direct English translation of the title is “People Place Time”.

The lyrics of the song are about the protagonist expressing his love. It start off saying that the protagonist wishes that he could spent all his life with his girlfriend to meet all the people in his life and go to all the places together. He remember last year, they bump into each other and then they fallen in love. He is sorry that sometime he can’t be with her, but he wishes that in the future they will always be together. 14th Apr 2013 (電燈膽 – Stephy Tang)

The song that I chose for today is “電燈膽” by Stephy Tang. Stephy was part of a group of nine girls, called “Cookies”. They made a few albums, but I think the group size was too large, and people can’t quite remember who is who, so the group later on reduced its size to 4. The smaller group was call “mini Cookies” and Stephy was still part of it. Though this group didn’t last long and eventually the four of them started their solo performance. Personally, I don’t like Stephy too much, but this song is one of the few that I quite enjoy. The direct English translation of the title is “Light bulb”.

Before we talk about the lyrics, for those that are not familiar with Chinese (I guess I should be more specific, so Cantonese), the phrase “電燈膽” could also be used to describe people that stick around with couple. For example, if you are going out with your sister and her boyfriend, then you are acting as “light bulb”. But note that this phase is not too polite, and typically use in the negative sense, so in that scenario, you will be called “light bulb” when one of they found that your existent is disrupting them. Anyway, back to the song, the lyrics are exactly about the above used of the phase. It start off telling us that the protagonist said that she can’t publicly say that she is jealous, so she got to learn to accept her fate. During holiday, the three of them went out together, while their conservation sounds like it was warm, but she actually feel very cold as she feel that she is isolated. She thought about their past, it was her who accidentally introduced them to each other, and now it is her that feel left out. She is their closest friend, but when she see them kiss, she don’t know whether she should feel happy that they love each other so much or feel sad as she is not the one kissing with the boy. She tried to hide from them as she is sick of being a “light bulb”, and she felt great pain, but yet she is not used to being alone. So perhaps she should admit that maybe she purposely act as a “light bulb”, just so that one day when they broke up, she could easily go in and replaces her friend to become his girlfriend. She will never tell anyone why she still hangs around with them. She wonders if one day they broke up, would he choose her to be his girlfriend. Hope you will like the song.

13th Apr 2013 (丫烏婆 – George Lam/If you wanna be happy – Jimmy Soul)

The song that I chose for today is “丫烏婆” by George Lam. This is a very old song. Personally I like the melody of the song, it makes the song quite relaxing. The title in English is “Ugly woman”. Note that this song is the official Chinese cover version of Jimmy Soul’s “If you wanna be happy”, the lyrics of the two songs are pretty much the same.

The lyrics of the song are quite stand out. They basically talked about that man should married ugly woman. The song start off saying that if mans want to be living happily, then they should marry ugly lady, so we should try to avoid good looking lady in our life. It said, good looking girls tend to be selfish, they tend show up late and treat you like rubbish. But contrast, ugly woman will be crazy for you, they would never treat you bad and they will take care of your daily life.

12th Apr 2013 (Old school love – 朱豔強)

The song that I chose for today is “Old school love” by朱豔強. 朱豔強 is one of the fictional character made up by Jim Yan (the vocal of Wild child), recently he is acting as this fictional character and performing in a talk show. To promote his talk show, he produced this song. This song is so similar to the song that I talked about yesterday (11th Apr 2013 (心裡日記 – Sam Hui)), I think it was done purposely to bring back that ‘old school’ feel. The lyrics are so similar as well, but it is a bit crazier.

The lyrics of the song are about love. The lyrics start off telling us the protagonist like to hang out with his love one after school. (Note that although it never mentioned in the song, but his love one should be a man, as 朱豔強 is set as a gay man (though Jim, the real person, is not homosexual)). In the weekend, the protagonist and his boyfriend play with kite and walk on the beach; they cry when they get home (as they can’t see each other) and got so excited the next day when they meet at school. He wrote all these happy memories into his diary and every pages of his diary is about his boyfriend. Although the things in his diary are so outdated and old fashion, but when his kids or grandsons read it, it would became fashion again. He remembered during their trip, he kissed on his boyfriend and it was so pure. Every night, they kiss through the phone; he called to a radio show and picked songs for his boyfriend. Although they love have long passed, but these memories will always be in his diary.

Personally I love this song. The song brings a sense of pureness and puppy love feel. But what I like the most is the old fashion melody, it is something that is quite unique to that era and seems to disappeared in the modern days. Hope you will enjoy the song.
