11th Jan 2015 (全世界失眠 – Eason Chan)

The song for today is “全世界失眠” by Eason Chan, this was requested by a reader. It was a song from 2001, at the early days when Eason joined MusicPlus. The English translation of the title is “The whole world got a sleepless night”.

The lyrics of the song are about the protagonist on one hand really feels that he is in love with this girl always thinking of her, but on the other hand, worry that he is not good enough and she might leave him. He said, thinking of his imperfection, he wonder whether she will escape from his reach. The feeling of thinking of her, he wonders whether he could make this pillow sweet. Thinking of the date in the morning, he forgot about the coffee at night. He just worry that love is like tide, leaving his dream castle. One person having a sleepless night, the whole world couldn’t fall to sleep. The innocent street light, waiting for tomorrow. A sweet sleepless night, all because he was worry that once he closes his eyes, how would he be thinking of her until six in the morning, how to love her to the end. He wonder when she think of him, would she also be sleepless like him. Thinking of the possibility between them, would he lose the ability to count sheep as they all pair up. Thinking of the date in the morning, he forgot about the coffee at night. He just worry that love is like tide, leaving his dream castle. One person having a sleepless night, the whole world couldn’t fall to sleep. The innocent street light, waiting for tomorrow. A sweet sleepless night, all because he was worry that once he closes his eyes, how would he be thinking of her until six in the morning. How to love her to the end, how to love her to the end. Hope you will like the song.

  2. Thank you Sunny for fulfilling my request and answering my question!

You're not old!!! You're only older than me by 4-5 years; I was born in 1990.I'm turning 25 in March, and I'm actually looking forward to it. I find that as I get older I care less about what people think (which is less stressful because you stop comparing yourself with others) and become wiser.

Its the opposite with me. Most of my music knowledge has come from men in my life. My dad, my ex-boyfriend and right now Yiruma (Korean pianist who happens to be a DJ too).

You mention a lot about listening to the radio. Do you listen to HK radio stations? Any that you recommend?

As I was reading your older posts, I found out that you're doing your PhD right now. Are you finished? There's a quote by  Rick Warren that I really like: "Remember how far you’ve come, not just how far you have to go. You are not where you want to be, but neither are you where you used to be." I hope when you encounter difficulties, this quote can be of some encouragement for you. :)

And again, sorry for the long comment! I won't do it anymore, if it bothers you.

    1. Hi Miss C,

I'm wondering what your blog site is, do you also do translations? I've also been following Sunny's site for a at least a year now.

    2. Hi Miss C, ya I listen to quite a lot of HK radio shows. I listen to two shows from”叱o宅903” pretty much daily, the two shows are “早霸王” (Good morning king) and “口水多過浪花” (When I Was Young I Listen To The Radio). I especially like早霸王 as it talk a lot of interesting things in a fun way. They also countdown on old 903 music chart on Wednesday, which I think you might be interested (I know some of the reader of this blog also listen to them on Wednesday :D ) I also listen to Wan Hoi, he started off in a late night show in RTHK, then moved to 903, but due to some disagreement with the management in 903, he quitted around a year ago, and now got his own YouTube Channel that he post a new show around once a month (you can check him out here: https://www.youtube.com/user/timecoolfreeradio). Wan Hoi talks a lot of weird stuff, like UFO, ghost, secret societies, religions (not just the well-known one, but also those that many people wouldn’t usually have heard of) as well as traveling (as he travels a lot, especially to country or places that many people don’t often travel to, like Iraq and some Human-eating village….), not a radio show for everyone, but certainly interesting if you want to know about things that people don’t usually talk about.

As for my PhD, I have completed it around a year ago. Thinking back at those days, I think I can say that it is the darkest days in my life. Everyday feel hopeless, as there were so much pressure, trying to do my best to improve the situation, but most of the things that I did lead to dead-end. I have always been taught by my parents that if the outcome is not what I want, it is because I didn’t work hard enough to make it happened. So I guess I am one of those that always give it more than 100%. But during my PhD it really crushed me, as I realised that there are things that even if you tried your hardest, it will just not happened. So I guess it was the realisation of how I though the world works differ so much to what it is, combined with not knowing how to pull myself out of the situation that crushed me. I was glad that my family and friends were there to support me, to share my negative thought. Thanks for the quote, I think you really hit the point, I should be more optimistic. Like that analogy of half a glass of water, whether you view it as half full or half empty. I should focus more on what I have rather that what I might have lost.

I really don’t mind long comment :) I just try to keep my messages short as I often go off topic and people lose track of what I am talking about (this reply is probably a perfect example of it….) So ya, feel free to write long comment :D

    3. Thank you Sunny for the recommendations!

You mentioned the old 903 music chart countdown. Which show is it on? 早霸王?

Your early posts recommended English songs, and then you stopped. Is there a reason why you don't post English songs anymore? I would love to know what English songs you have in your music library.

Is your current job related to your field of study? Reading about your experience reminds me a lot of "未生" (Misaeng/Incomplete Life). I don't know if you watch Korean dramas, but it's about a 26 year old man who spent most of his life training to become a professional go (game) player. He fails, and is a high school dropout, no post-secondary education, and working at a company with people who have much higher qualifications then himself. Anyway, it's not your typical drama. No romance, but simply about ordinary people trying to survive everyday in the workplace and in life general; people living "incomplete" lives who aim to live "complete" lives.

I'm sure many people can relate to what you've been through (including me). Having spent most of my life studying music, only to not pursue and do anything related to it really became a shock and disappointment to many people around me. Anyways, life moves on.

Thanks for sharing so much of your personal life with me (and your readers). Is there a reason why you don't post your email up? I'm sure a lot of people would email you to ask for recommendations or just to let you know how much they enjoy your blog.

    4. Yes, the old 903 music chart count down is part of早霸王 Wednesday shows. In the second half of their program on Wednesday, they do some oldies things, like reading old news article and realising how different the world/newspaper works back then. During the countdown they play around 10 seconds of each of the top 10 songs, the one that got voted the most (usually on Tuesday they show the list on their facebook page, and so you can vote on the one you like the most) will play in full at the end of the show on Wednesday.

As for English songs, I actually don’t listen too much of them. Beside, as I enjoyed Chinese songs (especially Cantonese songs) so much, I do hope that one day it could reach the same level as it was in the 80’s/90’s (or how Korean music is today internationally). So in some way I wanted this blog to act as a bridge for people who got attracted to Chinese music and wanted to know more (or simply wanted more suggestions on similar songs that they might be interested). So simply said, more like a Cantonese/Chinese music 101 :p

I am currently unemployed. After graduated with my PhD degree, I decided that I needed some time to relax and to recover, so I took around half a year off doing nothing specific and travelled a bit. I started looking for jobs around 6 months ago, while I am quite open in type of field that I search for, so far haven’t heard any good news yet. I guess that got to do with my educational background, as I am a graduate of Aerospace Engineering, which to some degree limited the country that I could work in (due to that aerospace work typically tide up with defence, hence they prefer citizen of their own country), and the aerospace industry isn’t doing so well….. PhD degree doesn’t help much either, as companies don’t typically view it as work experience and if applying for jobs targeting for bachelor, they usually think that I am over qualify :( But so far, I still managed to keep myself positive, which I guess is already an improvement :D

As for not including my email address, well, I started this blog in 2012, at the time when I felt very down. So I took this blog as an opportunity to escape from my normal life. While I don’t mind talking about my personal life when asked, back then I typically minimising the chance to exposed my identity. Only in later posts I decided to loosen on this. That’s because I wanted to create this place that people know me simply through my interest and music taste. So I made it a little harder for people that I know to find this blog (for example, by not including my email, so they can’t search for this blog through my email). But if people are really interested, or they put in lot of effort to find out, then I am happy to talk about it (just like these messages :) ). Anyway, all that are more of the past, I think I will look for a way for readers to private message me, so thanks for the suggestion.

  3. Currently, I'm not blogging. I am in the process of starting one. I would like to do a 音樂日記 (music diary). In terms of older music, I know more English than Cantonese music. If you're interested, I'll let you know when I do create one.

  4. What are your thoughts about current Chinese music?

Probably a dumb question to ask, but are you fluent in Chinese (reading & writing)?

I remember reading about your travels. Did you go to Europe at all? I wish I was in the UK right now, so I can watch all the TV series I want to see NOW!

I actually think you've exposed quite a lot of your identity... I could tell from your choice of words where you possibly are..I hope that doesn't sound creepy. It's just that you used a word that I've never heard of before, so I had to Google it.

Since we're on the topic of identities...ever since you posted my request, I've been really curious about the Anonymous comments. Are the comments made by the same person? If they are, why be anonymous? Well, I made a discovery last night....serendipity...I'll leave out the details since this isn't a private message. ;)

It makes me wonder how many of your readers have been reading these comments the past few days.

    1. I think the current Chinese music is not diverse enough. Looking back at the Chinese (mostly represented by Hong Kong/Cantonese) music in the 80’s and 90’s, there was a larger variety. There were people like Aaron Kwok that mainly focus on dance music, Jacky Chenug that sell singing technique, Leon Lai that sell more of his cutie/sweet music (like我愛 Ichi ban). As well as them, the giants back at those days, like Anita Mui, Alan Tam, Leslie Cheung, Roman Tam, Beyonds, while they had a particular image, but they willing to take the risk to switch style between albums, bringing different types of music for their audience. These days, music companies, due to the low sales number, not willing to take risk, only seems to follow the formula they worked out through the years but seems to neglect the changes in the market, causing a drop in diversity. So somewhat formed a vicious cycle. The only iconic Hong Kong singer these days that can bargain to take risk is Eason Chan, but he is the only one of his kind. Hopefully more iconic singer will emerge (Hins Cheung is a good candidate, but he still need more work I think).

I can read traditional Chinese and speak Cantonese, though not Mandarin (I can somewhat understand it, but can’t speak). I can’t do too well for writing though, lucky these days there are translator on internet, so if I even need to write in Chinese, I can just think of a word in English and get it translated to copy the word that I need. Takes a long time to write a passage, but at least it works :p

I have been to Prague and Amsterdam a few years ago, and Moscow & St. Petersburg last year (if you count them as part of Europe :) ) I never been to UK, many told me that it is quite boring to live there, but I want to visit there once. I think it feels very much like Hong Kong before 1997, and it will bring back a lot of memories.

These days it is quite impossible to fully cover my internet footprint :D So I am ok with some of my identities being discovered through my blog. Just that I tried to minimised it and avoid direct searching. You might know a fair bit about me now, but at least you put in the effort to read my blog and message me, so I am fine with that. I just don’t want my identities to be easily access without any effort.

As for the Anonymous comments, well I think different reader (at least a few) wrote them. I enabled the anonymous option in blogspot such that people can freely leave comment without worrying. I think that by not leaving a name, some people will feel more comfortable and can become more open. Though, I think blogspot default reply as anonymous, so perhaps that’s why there are many anonymous comments :) (As the writer, I got different options when I reply, so I am not too sure how it works for readers). I don’t think many reader would be reading these messages :p this blog don’t get a high traffic anyway. There aren’t many long term followers and most got to this blog by chance through google search for a particular song.

    2. Usually the Anonymous is probably just me, at least lately. I don't know I just like to cover up my identity as its more comfortable as Sunny says. Even if I put a name its not like you can email anyways.

I thought I was the most dedicated in reading Sunny's blog, I guess you easily surpassed me, it looks like you found his blog within the last couple weeks and you basically looked through his whole site in a short period of time.

I usually take a look at Sunny's site whenever I have time as he posts Songs everyday, some of them I like, some I really like, then there are some that I don't but for the most part they are good. I like the background info and descriptions he gives of the songs.

    3. Anonymous, I was thinking for a long time how to reply to your comment (without freaking you out). I SWEAR I discovered this by accident! I think I "know" who you are...its just that all your comments seem to match up with my discovery. Are you the one behind "s _ _ _ _a s _ _ _ d"?As Sunny mentioned, this blog doesn't get high traffic. If you really are that person, we live in the same area/city!!!

Sunny: I agree with you on that. I think it's the same with HK's movie and TV industry too. I find most of their things too conservative and repetitive. Also, there's too little competition in industry.

Since you wrote a bit about the protests in HK awhile back, have you watched the HKTV show " The Election/ 選戰"? It's very similar to "House of Cards" and a show that's quite controversial for the average TVB watcher.

I really enjoy reading your blog. I like how sometimes you add your personal story/experience to your posts. What I like most is the background info you include. It's hard to find stuff like that, especially for those who can't read Chinese. Also, I like how you take time to reply to me. :) I just feel bad because I ask so many questions.

    4. LOL. Wow you really looked through this whole site. Um yeah thats me. This blog actually inspired me to create my own music blog, I saw how Sunny was translating songs and I wanted to have my own collection for my own reference. I used to have all these bookmarks of all these translated lyric sites on my browser.

I just assumed you were from either Europe or Australia. Didn't think you would be from Canada. What a small world! Just curious are you from the downtown area or uptown?

Anyways drop me a comment when you have your site up = )

Oh I'm also wondering if you guys know where I can download or listen to Cantonese radio drama, I haven't heard one in a long time since my cousin gave me some mp3 files. '藍寶石的夜空 [A Sapphires Empty Night]' is the best one I've heard.

    5. Miss C, ya, the shows/drama from HKTV really brings some solid competition to the TV market. It is sad that HKTV didn’t manage to get their licence as a free through air TV station, but I guess the free VOD model suite them better. Their drama, like they said themselves follows more of the US drama style, and like you said, the topics that they choose are really controversial, both of these are too much of an impact for older audience, and they tents to choose to ignore the dramas :( So video on demand model make it much easier for newer generation to access their shows, and hopefully one day they could compete directly with TVB.

Both of you seems to be very interested in radio drama. They are a bit hard to search for unless you know the name of the drama that you want. There is this place that got quite a lot of radio drama (http://www3.tvboxnow.com/forum-226-1.html), but the links are a bit dated and might not work. Apart from that, if I remember correctly, all RTHK radio dramas are free to listen to on internet from their website (http://rthk.hk/radiodrama/). Though RTHK radio drama are mostly based on classic Chinese books (such as衛斯理 , 聊齋誌異 and books by金庸, such as 雪山飛狐 and鹿鼎記). I haven’t listened to any of them as they usually got a lot of episodes, so takes a long time to listen to them all, but I believe they are all good as the books are consider to be very good.

Thanks both of you for reading my blog. I enjoy communicating with you. And thanks for the suggestions as well. Ah, as suggested by Miss C, you can now communicate with me through email (though please keep song request as comments as I found them easier to manage that way). I have added a ‘new’ author to this blog (which is also me, just with a different account :p ), the profile is visible for that account. You can get to the profile from the right hand side, under ‘Contributors’. The first one is the new profile. Once in there, you can click the email link on the left :D

Uptown. What about you? Are you a CBC?

When did you listen to 藍寶石的夜空?

If you want to listen to 藍寶石的夜空 again you can go here: http://m.ximalaya.com/1312016/album/191222

It's really hard to find radio dramas these days. The closest thing I've encountered is Ximalaya. :(

    1. Anonymous, you should listen to "Serial" if you like radio dramas. It was super popular in the US, but not much people seem to know about it here.

    2. Ah would be interesting if I actually knew you in real life or have some kind of connection. Seeing you are from from the uptown area, maybe there is lol. Yeah I'm a CBC raised in Markham. Didn't pay attention in Chinese school, refused to listen in class or do any homework(parents forced me to go, remember staring at a wall, day dreaming and wait for recess or classes to end lol). So now I regret it deeply =( I can't read any Chinese except for basic characters. Really sad because I can speak fluently and I prefer to speak Cantonese. I can't converse in Mandarin at all.

Oh I listened to 藍寶石的夜空 a lonnng time ago, really long. Um my university days around 2003, ok now you know how old I am lol.

Thanks for the link, I've lost all my mp3 music files from before including about 4-5 radio dramas. Haha actually I'm listening to it now at work =) If you have any other sites with radio drama please let me know.

I'll try the Serial drama once I'm finished listening to 藍寶石的夜空 again =)

    3. Woah! I'm in Markham too!!!! Which high school did you go to? Give me the first letter of the school! I went to "M" school.

I'm a CBC too. My Cantonese is alright. Can't write, but can read traditional and simplified Chinese pretty good. I learned by watching a lot of foreign movies and TV shows.

Just curious, how old are you? I was 13 when you were in university. Lol.

Now I'm really curious about you...does your name have something to do with Samurai x /kenshin? I watched the movies recently.

      Delete
    4. lol. Umm school starting with M doesn't really help haha. Markville SS, Markham District, Milliken Mills, Middlefield all start with M. Lol I went to F.

Oh did you go to Chinese school at all? Wow that's really nice you can read Chinese. I'm guessing Sunny is 29, I'm 31. Yeah I feel really old talking to you lol.

Lol that S name is just a random nickname, but yes that name came from Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X). My favourite anime, Shinta was the main character original name before his name got switched to Kenshin.

So you mentioned that you studied music all your life, so do you know how to play alot of instruments?

      Delete
    5. You went to Father Michael McGivney??? Catholic school??? I went to Milliken.

I did go, but my parents allowed me to quit when I was in grade 3/4. I regret not learning French more than Chinese.

You're 31 currently or turning 31 this year? You shouldn't feel old! Our age difference isn't that big. Besides you seem like a kid. :p

Did you watch the live action movies? Have you heard of "attack on titan"?

I played the piano, clarinet, guitar and koto (Japanese string instrument). I haven't played in a long time though, so don't even think I remember how to anymore. I regret quitting. :( I do want to learn piano and koto again...do you play anything?

You're a CBC, but are you more whitewashed or fobby?

      What should I call you?

      Delete
    6. yeah lol! I went there, if I was in the public school system I would have went to the same high school as you. So basically you lived in the same area as me when I grew up, we've probably seen each other before lol.

Lol, um yeah I think I was in grade 5 or 6 until my parents finally pulled the plug on chinese school. Oh as for French, I've forgotten everything pretty much.

Currently 31 but my bday is near the end of the year. Ah attack on titan, its from a Japanese manga right, ah it looks so scary. I never had a chance to watch that is that any good? As for the Kenshin live movies I've skimmed through it, wasn't really into it since I know how the story goes in the anime. Not sure I just prefer the anime more the live movies for most of the anime's.

Lately I haven't watched much movies, I just watch some of the TVB that's out once in a while. Since my job is at the desk all day, I try to limit my time in front of the screen away from work.

Wow lots of instruments! I can't play any any more, my Dad used to force me to learn piano and guitar. Funny thing is I want to play the guitar and piano now but the skills are all gone. That's how life is sometimes when you take things for granted and try to rebel, comes back to bite you. At least in my cases =)

Well seeing that I enjoy listening to Cantonese music I'm already kind of on the fobby side. Umm you can use the Shinta name if you want, lol. What should I call you?

    7. When you were in high school, did you have grade 13?

Which elementary school do you go to?

So are you still in the Markham area, or did you move away?

      Awww, you're a Christmas baby!

I haven't seen it either. My friends tell me it's good. I know there's a live action movie of it coming out. So you don't like watching scary/horror stuff?

How's your eyesight? Do you wear glasses? I'm seeing my optometrist at the end of the month. I don't think I have 20/20 vision anymore. :(

Do you plan on learning again? I really want to, but first I have to get myself a piano.

I'll call you Uncle Shinta! Lol. Just kidding. Miss C is fine.

      Delete
  6. Yeah OAC (gr 13). I think mine was the 2nd last year. For elementary I went to SFX, how about you?

Haha I live on the west side of Toronto now, I miss Markham a lot though, but house prices are really high in Markham. Yeah I moved out of Markham when I was in university. Then came back for summers and lived in Markham for a bit after university.

As for the Kenshin action movie haha you are making me want to see it now, I saw some short clips of some of the fighting scenes and they look pretty cool. Perhaps when I have time I'll watch them since I'm a big fan of Kenshin.

For scary stuff I try not to watch too much, because at night I might get scared lol. Because I might think about the scenes from the scary movies, like if you go to dark places or whatever you always think something might pop out.

Yeah both my parents wear glasses, so yeah since I was like 12 I started wearing them. Can't function without them =) Well even if you don't have 20/20 you are still pretty close to there, thats nice not having glasses.

Hmm as for learning I don't think so, I think that time has past right, some people have been calling me uncle already =). Its quite costly and time consuming. Usually after work sometimes there's overtime so I'm kinda tired and its either trying to do some exercise or just trying to relax and get ready for the next day at work.

As for the piano its still at my dad's house and I think I've lost my guitar. You can probably pickup piano again if you were pretty decent at it before, just get a keyboard.

    1. I don't know what SFX stands for. Catholic school? Are you still a Catholic? I went to "H" school.

So you're living in Brampton (or what my friend calls Brown Town) or Mississauga?

Why do you miss Markham? Do you come to Markham a lot? I want to get out of here! Lol. There's been a lot of escape rooms, bbt chains and Chinese dessert places opening in the area.
Do you like bbt? Sing k?

Lol. I used to LOVE horror films and video games. I used to make my dad go to the theater to watch with me because I was too young to buy/watch without parent/guardian supervision. It's what got me to watch foreign movies & dramas. Now I'm more into the mystery/thriller stuff.

Uncle already? So most of your friends already have children?
