A Song a day: 9th Oct 2014 (分手總要在雨天 – Jacky Cheung/泣けない君へのラブソング

The song for today is “分手總要在雨天” by Jacky Cheung. A recent song by Charmaine Fong (“分手總約在雨天”) played with the title and the lyrics of that song somewhat reflect the story in this song. This song is the Chinese cover version of a Japanese song “泣けない君へのラブソング” by Maeda Nobuteru (前田亘輝). The direct English translation of the title of the Chinese version is “Breakup always has to be on a rainy day”.

The lyrics of the song are about the protagonist bumping into his ex-girlfriend. It said, on a rainy morning, he arrived to this place, trying to get a shelter alone. When he turn around, next to this familiar road, he realised that she is just behind him. Like in the movie, they meet each other in this old, familiar place and both unpaired. They both sigh then asked about how they have been and then casually said something nice. He wonders why after all these years she still hasn’t change a bit, and why he is keep thinking about the past. The night when she said she has to leave, it was raining, just like today. Always have to be on a rainy day when you try to avoid your past. But rain always bought you together. Always have to be on a rainy day when you think about the past; they never see each other again after crying, hugging and saying goodbye. When he is alone, he found that his words are getting boring; he doesn’t know how to hide. Finally, on this familiar road, he saw that someone quietly looking at her. When she leaves this familiar place, she still feels so close. She said goodbye to him, and truly greeted him, just like the way that it was before. He wonders why after all these years she still hasn’t change a bit, and why he is keep thinking about the past. The night when she said she has to leave, it was raining, just like today.
