A Song a day: 13th Feb 2015 (藍雨 – Jacky Cheung/Rainy Blue

The song for today is “藍雨” by Jacky Cheung. This song is a reader request. This song was the Chinese cover version of “Rainy Blue” by Hideaki Tokunaga (德永英明). Many of Hideaki Tokunaga’s songs were covered in Chinese in the late 80’s, I think “Rainy Blue” was his very first song and it was also because of this song he got very popular. Anyway, there are two Chinese cover version of the song, both were sung by Jacky, one is Cantonese, one in Mandarin, both song share the same name. Here today, we will focus on the Cantonese version (as it is the version that I grew up with). The English translation of the title is “Blue rain”.

The lyrics of the song are about the protagonist walking in the rain, thinking about his last relationship and how it left him a broken heart. “The sky is grey and the street is empty, there are many strings of rain, crossing over to form an icy cold face. Within the slightly cold wind, an abandoned broken umbrella, is like it is saying how to get past today. Once he liked cloudy days because he likes to look at rain. They sprinkled onto her face under the light wind, like kissing on her face. But today, on the empty street, within the rain; without her, he found cloudy days to be very annoying. Cold rain, woo, No focus because he couldn’t find her. The cold rain weeps as if they are waiting for her to pass by. He tried to ask the rain to stop, to stop chasing a shadow and forget that there were couples walking in the rain. Rains didn’t know that she had already abandoned him, and still trying to search for her with the wind, like as if they didn’t know that they will never have an ending.
