3rd Aug 2014 (戀人 – Ken Choi/戀人よ – Mayumi Itsuwa (五輪真弓 ) )

The song that I chose f or today is “戀人” by Ken Choi. This song shares the same melody as Alan Tam’s “忘不了您”. Both of the song came out in the same year, but “戀人” is the first Cantonese version, but “忘不了您” is the most famous Cantonese cover version. The original melody is a Japanese song by Mayumi Itsuwa (五輪真弓 ) and the song is called ”戀人よ”. This Japanese song was so popular back then, even in Japan there are a few different versions. Apart from this song and “忘不了您”, there are two more Cantonese versions that I know of. The direct English translation of the title is “Lover”. Some people might not have heard of Ken, he was actually quite popular back in the 80’s. However, because he publicly denounced Leslie Cheung (as least that is what most people think), he lost his popularity which lead to the failure of his career no matter what he did later on to try to fix it. In the 90’s he got a bit crazy, and one point he was named as one of the 4 crazy celebrities in Hong Kong.

The lyrics of the song are about love. The protagonist said that just like old time, he still remember her. Just like that cold breeze in the summer. Her voice started to bring up some memories, fate is by faith? Someone bought them together? The sun shine on the mountain side, the cloud flowed aside. It felt that it is a coincident that the two happened at the same place. It felt like the morning sun, and the great scenery of flower blossom in Spring. He wishes that this bright red will be printed on her face. They originally didn’t know each other; never meet. Who was the person that secretly led their heart together? He felt that their love was foggy, and he felt that he chose to fall into the cloud. He felt lost when he accompanying her, so he let her lead the way. The sun shine on the mountain side, the cloud flowed aside. It felt that it is a coincident that the both shine on the same place. Like that moon reflection on the sea, and like the foot print in the cave. He wishes that this love will forever engraved in his head. Hope you will like the song. For comparison, I have also linked to the original Japanese version.
